Once Aria was out of sight, I shut the door and busied myself finding a pair of clean jeans and a T-shirt. Personal stuff fell out of the backpack in the process, including a packet of muesli bars I’d made myself two days ago back home in Mystic Spring, a small town no one knew existed in America.
On cue, the sound of my empty stomach churning reached my ears, and I hastily unwrapped the packet. I quickly munched on one as I stripped myself naked. I hadn’t eaten since yesterday evening, my last meal, and it had been more than fifteen hours.
Still chewing, tasting the sweetness of cereal, dried fruits, and nuts in my mouth, I turned my attention to the shower. Twisting the handle to the right, a burst of cold water sprayed at me, making me jump. I turned it a little farther to the warm section. A few seconds later, it was at the right temperature, and I sighed in relief.
It felt so good, and the water temperature was just right. Sticky brown goo ran down my body, leaving my skin once again clean and milky white. I unbraided my long black tresses and rinsed away the dirt. I wished I could shampoo my hair. As if God had finally for once answered my prayers, I happened to turn and see the bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. There was even a body sponge. My heart sang. Well, Ms. Lane did say she’d tell a maid to prepare the necessities for my shower.
“Thank you, Ms. Lane,” I said softly. “Thank you, maid.”
I quickly grabbed the shampoo and then thoroughly washed out my long hair. Once it was rinsed, I proceeded to condition it. Then I turned my attention to the body wash. A few minutes later, I was nearly done. But what the heck? I didn’t want to get out. I just wanted to stay in there forever. I was just closing my eyes when a bark came at the closed door. I blinked. Odd, this one sounded a little different from Sammy’s.
“Dogs,” I murmured to myself. I wasn’t a fan of them. Even since I was a child, I’d been afraid of them, regardless of the size. The encounter with Sammy previously hadn’t been pleasant. Though the dog did warm up to me, and it kept nosing at my backpack.
The sound of barks grew more aggressive, followed by a low growl. I wondered if Aria was outside with the dog.
Perhaps I should have stayed put, at least until the barking stopped, but I was stupid and I didn’t. I quickly turned off the shower, grabbed a towel, and wrapped it around me. Then I tentatively headed to the door.
The barking stopped then, and relief swept through me. I’d always been a curious girl, and against my better judgment, I grabbed the knob and opened the door slightly.
That was when all hell broke loose. Loud barks blasted at me, followed by a whirlwind of a white fluffy body throwing itself at me.
Freaked out, I staggered back, landing on my backside—hard—on the marble floor. I groaned and swore under my breath.
Pain fled my mind the moment I saw the dog heading my way, baring its sharp canines. It followed me until I was cornered between the basin and the toilet. Suddenly, it cocked its head to one side as it stared at me, its black eyes glistening against the light.
I was told if you want to make a dog your friend, let it smell you by giving it your hand. Well, if I wanted to get out of this bizarre spot, I had better become friends with this little beast right now.
With my hand shaking, I reached out, letting it sniff me. It watched me for a moment, and I thought it was going great. That was until it started barking again and growling at me, snapping its mouth at me as if it were about to bite off my hand.
I withdrew with lightning speed. Suddenly, it turned its attention to my backpack, sniffing at the thing with interest.
“What are you doing?” I asked the dog. It was a stupid thing, of course, since the canine wouldn’t have been able to understand me.
I leaned over, more concerned it was interested in my bag. It turned and growled at me again. Then it dipped its head into the bag and stuff flew out—my panties, bras, T-shirts, shorts. You name it. Then it got what it wanted. My bars.
My delicious muesli bars.
“Hey, give it back!” I demanded. That was my only source of food for the next few days. When they ran out, I’d resort to spending a tiny portion of my three hundred dollars for buying burgers to survive until I went home. The return flight to Mystic Spring was in five days. I hoped to get this two-million-dollars business sorted out by then.
The dog turned its attention to me, and knowing I’d fight it to the death for my belongings, it grabbed on to my backpack and sprinted out the door.
“Shit!” I swore under my breath and hastily got up. Clutching the towel against my chest so it wouldn’t unwrap itself from me, I slipped out the door and raced after the little thing.
“Come back here!” I demanded. “Give it back to me!”
The little beast refused to heed my pathetic commands and sprinted even faster across the hall. It turned and then was out of my sight. I forced my legs to go faster, too, and turned before realizing it was climbing the stairs. I went after him, my anger flaring at the little canine that had stolen my belongings.
Finally, I arrived on the next floor and, without thinking, raced after the little beast. It turned a corner and then slipped in through a slightly ajar door.
“Come back here, you little beast!” I ordered. “Give me back my backpack!”
I burst through the door, and before I could catch my breath, I slammed hard against a male body.
I closed my eyes as I puffed out a sound and bounced back from the brick wall of pure muscle. I felt myself falling backward, when suddenly warm hands wrapped around my waist, pulling me back. In the process, I automatically let go of my hands about the towel and wrapped them around the muscular, hard body. The towel slid down and landed in a pool of fabric on the soft carpet around my feet.
Finally, I opened my eyes and stared at the pale-blue shirt that seemed oddly familiar to me. My heart pumped loudly within my chest as I drifted my eyes from the broad chest up to the muscular neck, to the firm jawline, the sensuous lips, and then the aquiline nose.
I stopped there because I knew I just couldn’t go any farther. I knew I’d seen that face already, a mere hour ago, in fact. I knew if I were to go farther and meet those Prussian-blue eyes, I’d become breathless again with a sort of electrifying excitement as well as foreboding apprehension. I wouldn’t be able to think clearly.
To be sure, I wasn’t thinking clearly now. I mean, I never even thought about why the man with gorgeous Prussian-blue eyes, the man who had nearly driven into me, was here in this house that belonged to Mr. Maxwell in the first place. Or the fact that I was in his arms, naked and dripping wet. I didn’t consider it odd that I found nothing wrong with the situation and, rather, it felt very natural. I felt like I belonged there, naked and in his arms.
The dog barked again, securing my attention. I turned my gaze to it and glared. Butchered pieces of my bars were scattered on the floor and the dog’s mouth, evidence of the beast devouring my limited resources for survival. My backpack was ripped and torn, with damaged panties and bras and other pieces of clothing lying haphazardly on the floor.
I was pissed. Had no one in this humongous, expensive house fed this starving little beast of a dog? And some of my clothing and one and only backpack were ruined.
I stepped back and rushed out of the tight embrace of the man. I didn’t even care to think what I’d look like as I rushed over to the dog, naked, bending down on my hands and knees, with my rear on full display for the hot stranger to see.
I realized my mistake after I’d gathered my clothes, clutching them in front of me. The moment I stood and met his eyes, I wanted to die.
There was blue fire there. His gaze was hot and intense, and it made my body respond in a way I could never be able to describe. A hot rush of excitement and pure agony and dread whirled through my being, making me want to be anywhere but here. I swallowed, my whole body now trembling as he paced toward me.
His gait, powerful and sexy, made me take a step back, ready to bolt.
He stopped right in front of me. When I just stood there, staring at the broadness of his amazing chest, he said, “Mia Donovan?”
I slowly tilted back my head and stared at his chin. That strong, beautiful chin that suddenly made me want to touch and stroke it. The urge in me was so strong that I felt pure pain aching within me.
“Yes?” I replied slowly, my throat dry.
“You’re so timid and juvenile.” He described my flaws to me. His next words made me want to stab a knife into his heart. “How the fuck are you going to find me that two million?”
I flashed my eyes to him, anger flooding through me. My whole body trembled as I said, “Mr. J. Maxwell?”
His response was, “You’ve messed up my room.”
I held my head high and snapped, “It was the dog’s fault. It took my bag and destroyed some of my clothes. It even ate my food.”
He narrowed his eyes at me, and I suddenly realized I was treading on thin ice. Any moment now I would fall into the hell he had Andy in.
Yes, I’d come to the realization this man—this very hot, amazingly handsome man with beautiful Prussian-blue eyes—was the Mr. J. Maxwell, the man I’d dreaded meeting. The man Andy owed two million dollars. The man who would have Andy shot dead in an instant just because he wanted to and had the power to, without even the police stepping in and tarnishing his pristine and powerful image.
The dog chose that moment to run to its master, whimpering at the man with a cuteness no person could ever resist, including me, who’d never liked dogs.
Mr. J. Maxwell bent down and lifted the canine. “What have you been eating, Alfie? You’ll get sick from it.”
I was offended. “It’s a healthy, nutritious bar,” I said firmly.
He turned his attention to me, one handsome brow raised. “Oh?”
I noticed him eyeing me again, which I didn’t want. I suddenly felt self-conscious. Trying to cover myself from his intense and interested gaze with pieces of ripped clothing wasn’t going to do it. Thus, I looked to the towel near his feet. Without thinking, I rushed forward, bent low, and retrieved the white thing, avoiding master and dog as much as I could.
I turned my back to him as I awkwardly wrapped the towel around me. When I gave my attention to him again, he was looking at me, his face stern.
I waited as he continued to stare, which really unsettled me. I was about to say something when he quipped, “Get dressed and meet me in my office.”
He walked past me to the door, and I remembered to ask him, “Where’s your office?”
“Ms. Lane will show you there,” he said over his shoulder and then closed the door with a click.
MiaThe day had been long and exhausting for me, especially after James, Aria, and I had started that lunch with Liam, Scott, Eric, Alice, and Yuki. Then, of course, once we were done with that, Liam had suggested we stay for dinner as well since Alice, Yuki, Aria, and I seemed to get along so well. He had said that the sisters needed company near their ages, someone they felt comfortable with, since America was so new and different to them. Of course, I had fun spending time with the sisters, but I must say both Scott and Eric—well, mostly Eric—had behaved poorly, a side of them I had not seen before.Boy, was I glad we were finally home. After helping Aria bathe and dress, I lay beside her—along with Sammy and Alfie, who were being very nice and obedient, snuggling comfortably near Aria—reading them a bedtime story. When I finished the book, I tucked Aria in.I was about to kiss her good night when Aria asked, “Mia? Do you love Daddy?”That took me by surprise, and I blushed intense
MiaWilliam arrived to pick up Savannah at eleven that morning for their return flight to Vegas. After Savannah and I had hugged tightly, Savannah said, “You have to come to Vegas again soon.”Beside me, Aria was excited. “We can ask Daddy. He did promise to take me there soon.” She turned to her father standing not too far away. “Isn’t that right, Daddy?”James nodded. “Yes, sweetheart.”Once William and Savannah departed, James, Aria, and I went to have lunch with Liam, Scott, and Eric at the main house. Of course, I had no idea this was happening until this morning after breakfast when James happened to just casually mention it. And to be honest, I wasn’t exactly prepared for it. Wasn’t it like my boyfriend taking me to meet his parents for the first time? Which freaked most girls out because they had to give a good first impression. But then again, what was there for me to prepare for? I had already met Liam last night, after all.Aria seemed excited to see her grandfather again,
JamesThe moment their father appeared at the door, James knew for a fact that Eric wasn’t happy. He knew also that, soon, the youngest brother would bring up the subject of their father’s future young bride and demand details. Of course, James had no idea why Eric was so riled up about something this trivial. After all, their father was very popular with the opposite sex, regardless of age, and for him to tie the knot again, with a twenty-five-year-old woman at that, wasn’t all that surprising.Currently, they were drinking, nibbling, and chatting about various topics—social and business. They even talked about Herbert Weston and the Mexican mafia, which didn’t much interest James. To him, what was done was done. Of course, what really interested James was Mia.Fuck! He wanted to kiss her and make passionate love to her, but alas, he obviously couldn’t do that until everyone left.It was around midnight when Eric finally brought up the much-anticipated subject. Of course, James was q
MiaI dismissed the thought of my brother and Matt from my mind and headed into the bathroom to shower. When I was done, dressed in a lovely loose, long-sleeved blouse and trousers, my makeup lightly done, since my bruised skin was still too sensitive, I headed out the door.I found Savannah sitting on my bed, waiting for me.“Hey,” I said. “Sorry, I think I might have overslept a little.”Savannah chuckled. “No worries. I did that this morning as well. I was so tired.”I nodded. Of course, her having found out about my kidnapping had really scared her, and the whole situation must have exhausted her. Now that I was safe and sound, everything had just kind of caught up to her. I didn’t miss the dark circles under her eyes, either.I was so moved by the fact that she had been so good to me, especially since we had only been friends for a short time, that I gave her a tight hug again. “Thank you for coming all the way here and helping out.”“It’s fine, Mia,” Savannah said. “You’re my fr
MiaThe next day, I was finally discharged from the hospital, and James, with Andy tagging along, came to pick me up that afternoon. Of course, both men watched over me like mother hens as I slipped out of bed and began to get myself ready.I was just reaching out for the luggage to start packing when Andy said, “I’ll do that for you. You go and get changed.”I nodded and headed into the bathroom, a dress in my hand. While Andy packed my stuff into the bag Savannah had brought for me, James was in the bathroom, aiding me with getting dressed since my movement was slow. Of course, I didn’t mind the fact that I was half naked in front of him, in just undies and bra and my bare skin marked with dark bruises everywhere. After all, he had seen me naked last night when he was making love to me, albeit under the dimness of the wall light.“Raise your arms,” he instructed as if I were his daughter. I thought he was being very parental toward me.I smiled as I obeyed him, raising my arms high
MiaI was finally judged to be well enough to allow a proper shower by myself instead of the occasional sponge bath by the nurse, which, to be honest, was rather embarrassing to say the least. And of course, now that I didn’t have an IV line connected to me, it was even better. After retrieving a towel and the bathroom essentials that Savannah had considerately brought for me yesterday evening, I headed into the bathroom. I took my time brushing my teeth and cleaning myself thoroughly, and, of course, enjoying the warm water on my skin. By the time I was done, I smiled with glee at the fact that I now smelled like the Garden of Eden. After donning the undesirable hospital gown once again and putting on some night cream over my still lightly bruised face, I headed back out, humming to myself.“You sound like you’re having a fine time showering,” the night shift nurse, Laura, said, chuckling.“Hello there. Yes, it’s the first time in five days I’ve showered, so…”Laura nodded. “I can un
MiaWhen I woke again, I felt a lot better. The headache was gone, as was the exhaustion. After cleaning myself up for the second time that day, I returned to my bed with renewed determination. I will no longer allow the thought of Herbert Weston to affect me. I will not cry remembering the trauma he inflicted on me nor the distress he caused me—physically, mentally, and emotionally. I will be free from that bastard! With that, I settled myself to read some magazines Brenda had left for me, and it wasn’t long before lunch arrived. It was also around then that Andy appeared at the door again. With my mouth still full of food, I stared at him wide-eyed as he walked toward me.“Hey,” he said. “Feeling better?”I quickly swallowed my food and reached my arms out for him, begging for a great big hug again.Andy came over and took me into his arms as I wrapped mine around his torso.I chuckled as I raised my eyes to look at him. “I hope you’re not driving Matt crazy because you’re so worrie
MiaWhen I woke, my hands were resting on the empty space on the side of my bed, and I wondered why it felt so warm, as if someone had been there only moments before. I shifted my body and then inhaled deeply. The scent that was unique to James caressed my nostrils, and I smiled. He had been here, hadn’t he? Sleeping next to me. My heart soared at the thought, though at the same time, I was a little disappointed that he didn’t wake me when he had arrived. We could have had a little chat and kiss.“Good morning.” A nurse I didn’t recognize greeted me as she came into the room. “How are you feeling this morning, love?”I gave her a bright smile, my lips and mouth a little sore in the process. Obviously, my wounds had not yet healed properly. “I’m good. A little pain, but it’s fine.”“That’s good,” she said, grinning brightly. Then she came over to stand at the end of the bed and picked up my medical record. She quickly scanned over the documents, and a moment later, looking rather satis
JamesWhen James came in through the door after a long day at the office and headed toward Mia’s bed in the hospital that night, he found her deep in slumber. Standing by her side, he gazed at her long and hard, noting the bruises on her beautiful face. Fuck! He wanted those unsightly marks gone as soon as possible. The sight of them reminded him of Herbert Weston and what the bastard had done to Mia, and once again, he felt rage erupting in his being. For perhaps the hundredth time, he swore nothing like that would ever happen to Mia again. He’d protect her. He’d cherish her.For now, she looked peaceful in her sleep, but he knew it wouldn’t last long. Soon, it would start, the nightmare, as it had the past three nights. She’d start crying and screaming and begging in her sleep as that terrifying episode of her kidnapping returned to haunt her. She’d scream for Herbert Weston to let her go. She’d beg for him to stop hurting her, and fuck, but the sheer fear and panic in her voice bro
