Chapter 1

Sophie's POV

"Sophie, I'll help you put your man in his place. Maybe then he'll stop picking on you all the time!" said my best friend, Juniper Young.

"I'm not scared of you," my boyfriend, Flynn Sadler, fired back.

I took a few steps toward them and opened my mouth several times, but I couldn't get a word in edgewise. I pressed my lips together and quietly watched as they chased each other around for a while.

Turning away, I tossed the now cold omelet rolls into a trash can. When I looked back, they had already disappeared into the beverage shop around the corner.

Not once did it occur to either of them to call for me before they left.

The night market buzzed with laughter and conversation. Everyone had someone to share the excitement with, while I was the only one left behind.

The notification chime on my phone finally snapped me out of my daze. I opened the group chat and saw someone had tagged me.

Flynn: "When you come over later, bring Juniper a pack of heating pads. She's on her period and keeps complaining that her stomach hurts. I don't want her ruining our alone time later."

Flynn: "Oh, and you can just throw those omelet rolls away. They're cold by now anyway, and Juniper won't be able to eat them."

I stared at the messages for a long time before taking a deep breath and replying, "I'm not coming to meet you guys. I just submitted my application to study abroad. It was approved."

Flynn: "Yeah, yeah."

Sophie: "My flight's next week."

Flynn: "Yeah, I got it."

Sophie: "Well…"

Flynn: "Understood!"

I froze. Only then did I realize Flynn hadn't read a single one of my messages. Before I could compose myself, dozens of photos flooded the group chat, burying everything I had sent.

Every single one of them was Juniper, captured through Flynn's lens.

He used to chase after Juniper with a camera, carefully searching for the perfect angle as he teased her. "You're the problem, dude. Unlike Sophie, she's naturally gorgeous and looks good no matter how I capture her."

Then he would casually snap a picture of me before hurrying after her again, camera in hand.

The last message in the group chat was a video. The footage shook wildly, obviously recorded by accident while they were wrestling over the phone.

Juniper sounded triumphant. "I'm ordering for Sophie! She's my best friend, so I get to decide what she drinks!"

Flynn immediately shot back. "Not a chance. Stay out of it. Sophie's my girl. She only drinks what I order for her."

If it had been the old me, I would've rushed over without a second thought, genuinely believing they were fighting over me.

Now, all I could see was him arguing at the top of his lungs while quietly shielding her head with one hand, afraid she would get hurt in the struggle.

A sharp pang hit my chest, and tears blurred my vision.

I was just trying to flag down a cab when Mom called. Her gentle voice came through the speaker. "Sweetheart, did you have fun with Flynn and Juniper today?"

The tears I had been holding back spilled over. The hurt crashed over me all at once, and I choked on my words. "Mom, I don't want to hang out with them anymore. I won't chase after them any longer…"

Before I could finish, my phone let out a low-battery warning. The screen then went black.

I stood there frozen, still holding the dead phone in my hand, tears clinging foolishly to my lashes.

Only then did I remember that on the way here, Flynn had casually taken the portable charger I had just rented from me and handed it to Juniper.

He had pinched my cheek, his voice full of affection. "I love this nerdy look. You're so adorable. It's killing me. Anyway, let Juniper have the last portable charger. She's way too restless. She can't go a minute without her phone."

"Who are you calling restless?" Juniper snapped. "Hey, why are you running off without waiting for Sophie?"

"Relax. She'll catch up once she follows the smell of the food…"

I closed my eyes and shook my head hard, trying to force the memories away. I staggered to my feet and raised my hand to hail another cab so I could get out of this place as soon as possible.

  • Changing My Future and Leaving Them Behind   Chapter 10

Sophie's POVI stayed silent for a moment before gently shaking my head. "Flynn, I used to believe that if I worked hard enough and stood on your level, you'd finally see me. But later, I realized love doesn't work that way."I spent so many years chasing after you that, somewhere along the way, I forgot who I was. I gave up painting—the one thing I loved most—and forced myself to focus on academics, all so I could stand beside you."But your taking me for granted taught me something. The most worthwhile thing a person can do is live a life they truly want. So, Flynn… let's just leave the past where it belongs."Flynn's eyes reddened. "I really know I messed up, Sophie. I…"Before he could finish, his gaze fell to the diamond ring on my left hand. His voice caught, and colors faded from his face. His Adam's apple bobbed as he swallowed the rest of his words. It wasn't until much later that I learned what he had left unsaid. He had wanted to tell me about his illness that was slow

Sophie's POVThe next time I saw Flynn, ten years had passed. It was at a small art exhibition in Fereece, where I was invited as a featured artist. The gallery was filled with clusters of visitors chatting quietly as they wandered from painting to painting.Soft lights bathed each piece in a warm glow.A champagne flute in hand, I whisked through the crowd and casually glanced toward a corner of the room. A lean man stood against a marble column, his head tilted slightly as he studied one of the paintings on the wall. The light traced the sharp lines of his profile, giving him a distant, almost lonely air. As if sensing someone watching him, he turned. Our eyes met. After an entire decade, I found myself looking once more into the eyes that had haunted my every waking thought as a teenage girl. It was him, Flynn Sadler.I paused for the briefest moment, then looked away without the slightest ripple of emotion.Funnily enough, I had imagined this reunion countless times, pictur

  • Changing My Future and Leaving Them Behind   Chapter 8

Third-Person POVSince that day, Flynn searched for Sophie like a man possessed. He called every phone number he could think of and tracked down every person who might know something. The list ranged from a distant relative who had only met Sophie once, to a classmate who had passed her homework back in high school, to the street vendor who sold omelet rolls. As long as someone had crossed paths with Sophie, even briefly, he refused to leave them alone.Still, nobody knew which country the Linwoods had moved to. He searched immigration records, combed through the school's archives, and even asked people to investigate the study-abroad agency that had handled her application.Yet, it was as if she had vanished off the face of the earth. Gone was every trace of her from the city.At first, Flynn had told himself it was okay. No matter where Sophie had gone, he could always get there too and follow her. She had walked 99 steps toward him, and it was time for him to take that last st

  • Changing My Future and Leaving Them Behind   Chapter 7

Third-Person POVAt 2:00 am, Flynn stood outside Juniper's place, pounding hard on the door. Wrapped in a bathrobe, she opened it with a yawn. Seeing how pale and shaken he looked, she frowned."What's wrong? It's the middle of the night, dude… Where's Sophie?""I can't get hold of her," he said, his voice gratingly hoarse. "Juniper, has she contacted you at all?"Juniper's face fell. "No. You know how I've been these past few weeks. I was afraid I'd upset her, so I haven't reached out. I did text her today, though, but she never replied. She always answered me right away before…"Flynn's expression made her anxious. "What happened between you two? Why do I feel like you're hiding something from me?"He rubbed his forehead, frustration filling his voice. "We had a fight. I mean, I didn't even say anything that terrible. I just told her to bring a cake over to you and apologize."You only ran into those bastards because you chased after her when she stormed off. If it hadn't been

  • Changing My Future and Leaving Them Behind   Chapter 6

Third-Person POVAs dusk fell, the chat between Flynn and Sophie remained silent. Not a single reply came from her.Sitting alone in his car, Flynn subconsciously tightened his grip on his phone. For the first time, he panicked, albeit just a little.Sophie had never been the type to leave someone's messages unanswered. She had only four pinned chats—her mother, her father, Juniper, and him.Ever since they were kids, every contact in her phone had its own unique nickname, notification sound, and chat wallpaper.Once, he had asked her, "You've had this phone number forever. Don't you ever get tired of it? Why not get a better one?"She had simply shaken her head. "I've used this number for so long. I can't bear to change it."Flynn knew how sentimental Sophie was. When they were five, he had given her a little stuffed rabbit. Even after one of its ears fell off, she refused to throw it away.Later, he secretly tossed it out for her, and she cried for an entire month. Buying her

  • Changing My Future and Leaving Them Behind   Chapter 5

Third-Person POVThe person who opened the door was a middle-aged man. Seeing Fynn standing there aggressively, the man instinctively took half a step back. He looked him up and down cautiously."Who are you looking for, kid?""I'm looking for Sophie Linwood," Flynn answered. "Sir, are you a friend of hers?"The middle-aged man frowned. "Linwood? That family moved."Flynn stiffened. "They moved? Where?""Abroad. The whole family of three left. It was around a few weeks ago," the man said, then took notice of Flynn's stunned expression. "Are you a friend of hers or something?"Flynn didn't answer. He simply looked past the man and scanned the inside of the house. The familiar furniture and layout from his memories were gone, replaced entirely with new ones.He stumbled back two steps and shook his head. "You've got to be kidding… There's no way. She was supposed to enroll at her college. How could she just leave all of a sudden?"The man remained polite, but distant. "That, I w
