I kept my head down as I followed Cody and my mate - Liam, I had learned - out of the office. As soon as we were in the hall, though, Cody rounded on me, shoving me into the wall.
“What the hell was that, Rose? Huh?” he snapped.
“I-I-I’m sorry!” I gasped, “I swear, I didn’t-”
His wolf surfaced, growling in my face. “I saw how torn up you were when you got back. I know you saw something, and I know you lied to me about needing to go up there myself.” Tears stung my eyes as spittle flew. “You’re fucking lucky we had someone up there to pick up the pieces. What the fuck do you think this looks like for your future as a scout here?”
I closed my eyes and let out a sob. I didn’t know how to put into words what happened up there, but I wished I could. Anything to repair my name.
I barely noticed when Cody was pulled away. It was a musical voice that pulled me back into the room.
“It wasn’t her fault,” my mate growled.
“Not her fault?” Cody demanded. “She fuckin’ baled up there, and she came back a piece of work. I asked her if I needed to go up myself and she said no!”
I couldn’t take my eyes off of Liam. His face grew hard, and I watched as he chose his words carefully. “I sent her away. She didn’t know anything happened.”
“Then how do you explain the way she turned up back here?”
“We got in a… disagreement,” Liam grumbled. “I didn’t think she would be helpful, and I sent her away.”
“Didn’t think she’d be helpful? She’s one of our best.” My head spun at Cody’s complete one-eighty. Not unusual for him, but still dizzying.
Liam squeezed his eyes shut, pinching the bridge of his nose. “I made a bad call,” he said through gritted teeth.
Cody narrowed his eyes. “You don’t make bad calls.”
And with that, Cody turned abruptly and stormed back into his office.
My feet were anchored in place, making it impossible to move out of my mate’s predatory gaze. Each step he took toward me sapped more air out of the hallway.
“Careful, Bunny. You wouldn’t want to scare yourself to death,” he breathed. He reached out, brushing the back of his hand along my cheek.
I closed my eyes, his touch sending me on a tailspin.
I wasn’t surprised when I opened my eyes to see he was gone.
I gave myself a couple moments to compose myself before making my way back to Cody’s office. I hadn’t been dismissed yet; I couldn’t just leave. I didn’t see how I was needed and it was the last place I wanted to be, but I hadn’t been dismissed.
Maybe I needed to have a bit more backbone.
I slipped in quietly, taking my seat. Even my mate didn’t seem to notice.
“I just don’t understand how there’s complete radio silence for over two weeks,” Cody quipped. “Did he just hit the pause button on his vendetta against rogues? I mean, it’s not like they would just disappear.”
“Hear me out,” the Alpha - sorry, Oliver - drawled. “Maybe, just maybe, they did disappear. Do you not think the two weeks there was no activity aligned pretty well with the two weeks Thom was gearing up the rogues to assist with Lya’s rescue mission?”
Lya nodded in agreement. “And the rogue that turned up was the rogue I specifically told to find me at the Snow Moon Pack. She got here, just the wrong town.”
Cody looked away, grumbling to himself.
“So if that’s all figured out and my best friend is off the hook for abandoning post, I am going back to bed. There’s nothing more to do until Danica shifts, anyhow.” Lya looked back at me, reaching her hand out. “C’mon, let’s go. Cody will apologize tomorrow.” She sent a pointed look over her shoulder back at the Gamma before leading me out.
“I am so sorry, Luna. If I had known something was going to happen, I never would have left! I wasn’t expecting to meet -”
“Rose, it’s fine,” Lya reassured me, cutting me off. “I’m not mad. I don’t know my brother well, but I do know he can be very difficult to get along with. I’m not surprised he ran you off, taking all the glory.”
I offered a halfhearted smile. Maybe I just wasn’t meant to tell anyone about Liam being my mate. “Thanks for standing up for me, at least.”
Lya rolled her eyes. “Like you wouldn’t do the same for me. Besides, apparently Cody finally rejected Ellie, and he’s just been unreasonable.”
“Doing the thing where he’s only tolerable when war planning?” I asked.
She nodded, her unkempt auburn curls bouncing around her face. “As little as I know about him, I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts one just to take his mind off of it. Apparently, she cheated on him.”
My eyes grew wide. Fated mates didn’t cheat.
“Speaking of, breakfast tomorrow at Lucy’s?” Lya asked. Speaking of? What could that mean?
“Yeah, sure.” I glanced around. “I think I’m gonna go for a run. But I’ll see you tomorrow morning?”
Lya gave me a quick hug goodbye before rushing off to find Oliver and head back to the packhouse. He was right, she really should be sleeping. Her two weeks as a prisoner had taken its toll.
The pack was more silent than usual. Wolves were typically out and about at night, enjoying the time under the moon. I didn’t complain, though. I wanted some silence. I shifted quickly, cautiously allowing Freyja to come forward. Part of me worried she would try and hunt her mate down, but I also knew she was just as hurt as I was. I hoped she would be responsible and let sleeping dogs lie.
'It isn’t his wolf we have a problem with,' she meekly informed me. 'I’m sorry. You deserve better.'
I didn’t respond. It was just me that was the problem. That just made things worse. I slunk back further, trying to hide from the world. We ran in silence for hours, the world flashing by around us. We saw no one other than patrols, and they kept to themselves, focusing on their task at hand. Everyone’s guards seemed to be up, as if they were expecting hunters to come popping out of the woodwork. That was very low on the list of possibilities, though. They wouldn’t have left the battle if the job wasn’t finished.
The sun was just beginning to think about rising when Freyja brought me back to the pile of clothes. I shifted quickly, starting on the trek back to my apartment, hoping for a few hours of sleep before breakfast with Lya, and undoubtedly also Anna.
Maybe they would have some words of advice for me. I mean, they were my two closest friends, both mated, and both relationships had rocky starts.
I was still within the trees when a familiar voice I equal parts loved and dreaded paralyzed me.
“Bunny.”
I couldn’t put words to what came over me when Cody attacked Rose - verbally or otherwise. Especially for something that wasn’t her fault. I couldn’t begin to explain what caused me to take the blame. I couldn’t stand that I proclaimed that I made a bad call. I don’t make bad calls - Cody got that part right - but sending her away had been an excellent call. My focus wouldn’t have left her if she had been there, and there was no predicting what damage that would have caused. Quite literally, a life hung in the balance. And that life was one that was very important to my Alpha, meaning I was obligated to protect the girl. My mate would come first, though. At least until I rejected her. So she couldn’t be around me when I needed to do my job. My job, my being, was not safe, and I needed to keep her safe. I was rejecting her to keep her safe, I decided. It was selfless. Maybe that would placate my wolf. It had surprised me when she showed her face in the impromptu meeting. I wat
Suffice it to say, I did not get any sleep. Twenty one years old, and that was my first kiss. It was implied that was not how I expected it to go. Sure, call me pathetic, I hadn’t ever had a boyfriend or a kiss or even held hands, but I just didn’t see the point. If I had known, however, that my mate would be someone like him I probably would have had a different outlook. I didn’t know what had come over me. I had never been that brash in my life. But, I had also never been that hurt and angry. Who did he think he was, rejecting his fated mate? He knew there were no second chances, right? For either of us. Who did he think he was, wrecking my future, not just his own? But, I was done. I was done being a doormat, I was done going along with what everyone else told me, I was done letting life happen to me. Something in me had snapped, and I refused to be that girl anymore. If I wanted something, I had every right to go get it. Especially if that thing was already mine. My lips
I didn’t sleep - couldn’t sleep. Truth be told, I wasn’t even certain how I had found my way back to the packhouse. Alo had purred until the sun was well into the sky, knowing full well that that little mate of mine had created a chink in my armour.Never in my life would I think someone would refuse a rejection. I couldn’t wrap my head around why someone would want to stay bound to someone who wanted to reject them. But, it intrigued me. That stunt she pulled - I refused to even think the word of what she did - was so far out in left field, and I wanted to know why. I had met tons of girls that would do something like that, but my little bunny did not fit in that category. I had to wonder what the hell the Moon Goddess was thinking when she selected her for me. I didn’t know what the next step forward was. She didn’t accept my rejection, which meant we were still bound. I knew my wolf wouldn’t help me come up with a strategy. I hadn’t been looking forward to rejecting her in th
Rose “So it’s decided, then,” Cody said, looking up from his paperwork. “Rose will stay on the Wyoming assignment, and we’ll replace Liam with Jason.” I sighed in relief, thankful that Liam’s protest that he and I were not the best team was heard. Lya nodded in agreement. “Liam and I as backup if need be.” “No,” Cody huffed. “We just said Liam and I as backup. You’re luna and alpha of the packs involved in this - you direct the fray, not get involved.” Oliver reached out to squeeze her thigh. “If it becomes more than a recon mission, then we go. You know you’ll be needed at his trial so we can’t risk you on the field.” Lya rolled her eyes, sitting back with her arms crossed. The little rogue Liam had brought back slept for three full days. I had been told to stay instead of returning to my position - Lya wanted her friends around to plan the luna ceremony - but Lya had either been training or by Danica’s side so not much planning had happened. When Danica had woken up and f
Liam The guys had somehow roped me into going out with them. I’d say I wasn’t sure how that happened, but I knew the exact reason. Rose would be there. I couldn’t say no, even though I knew I had no chance of going home with someone. Alo sent images through my mind of what she could possibly look like all decked out, but none of them seemed right. She wasn’t frilly, she wasn’t edgy, I’d say she’d go for something modest but her stunt the other night had me questioning her innocence. The images I liked the best, though, were the ones that didn’t involve a dress at all. I knew she was getting ready with the other girls in the packhouse because I could feel her proximity. I knew she was nervous because I could feel the jitters along my skin. I knew she was thinking about me because I was hard. Or maybe I was just thinking about her. The guys were not wasting their summer, spending as much time out on the patio as they could. I imagined once winter hit this South Dakota town, th
Rose Jade had met her mate last night. Given everything she had to say about him and what they did, I wasn’t exactly certain how she had untangled herself from the sheets long enough to find her way dress shopping for Lya’s luna ceremony with us. He sounded lovely, though. A career warrior here, but had recently made the switch over to Cyber. I had met him before, Daniel, but didn’t have much of an opinion of him, what with him finishing up his training as I was just starting. He had been stationed in the southernmost town of the pack until he made his transition over to Cyber. “He’s just dreamy,” Jade sighed. “I am so excited I had already agreed to accept a position here. Otherwise I’d have to enroll in the training program or something,” she giggled. Lya and Anna tittered on about Jade’s newfound mate with her while I just tried to avoid any and all conversations about mates. Something about salt in the wound. I had lost count of how many dresses Lya had tried on. Each one
Liam The pang that rung through my chest nearly brought me to my knees. A bitter taste soured my tongue, causing me to gag. ‘What is this?’ I demanded of Alo, wracking my brain for every illness that could hit a wolf like this. ‘That’s heartbreak,’ he said in a somber tone. I could feel him trying to push away from me, sending reassurance and comfort to his mate. Rose’s wolf had to be feeling it just as strongly if it was hitting us this hard. ‘Why?’ I growled, trying to rein my wolf back in. I didn’t need the two wolves forming any more of a connection than they had already. Alo didn’t respond, and rightfully so. He had more pressing matters. They should have been just as important to me, but the idea that the best thing for Rose was to be as far away from me as possible permeated all thoughts I had of trying to fix the bond. She would undoubtedly be good for me, but I wouldn’t be good for her. And because of that, we would destroy each other. Again, I never wanted a mate.
Rose I felt him before I saw him. I took too long to make a run for it, consumed by the soothing scent of a bonfire to make my escape. I turned slowly as my skin blazed. He took a step toward me. I was against the kitchen counter, though, with nowhere to go. “My bunny doesn’t run anymore.” His voice stoked on the embers quickly consuming me. I struggled to breath, the fire sapping all the oxygen out of the room. Why had I always thought proof of mate bonds were sparks, when this one was flames that would destroy you? Maybe it was a sign that this bond wasn’t right. But the mate bond was always right, wasn’t that what Lya said? “What do you want, Liam?” He reached out and snagged a strand of my hair, studying it closely. “Just to talk.” I huffed. “Then talk.” Finally, Liam looked up to me. “Alone.” He turned, walking out of the kitchen. His grasp around my wrist left me no option but to follow. To be honest, though, I would have followed him to the ends of the earth with
