Serena's POV

I looked at her profile, the gentle vulnerability inscribed on her features. "You don't have to 'do' anything to deserve kindness, Sophia. Sometimes people just… want to see you happy."

Her gaze flickered to me, considered, almost searching. Then she smiled very slightly. "Maybe you're right."

I stood up, stretching my arms. "Anyway, enough sulking about miracles. I'm heading in for the shower first before you monopolize the hot water."

That earned me a fake groan, but she did not protest.

The bathroom fogged up quickly as I stepped into the spray, having the weight of the day sluiced away by the water.

When I was done, I wrapped myself in a towel and padded back into the room. Sophia had already laid out her gown on the bed, the fabric a bright pink color that glowed in the light.

"Your turn," I said, shaking water out of my hair.

Sophia sprang up instantly and disappeared into the bathroom, humming to herself.

I dried myself off slowly and slipped into my own dress. Sop

Serena's POV"Thank you for being here," I said, my voice low but sincere. "It means a lot to me that you came to my party." Even though my heart wasn’t fully at ease with her, I knew it was the right thing to do."You're welcome," she smiled gently back. Her tone was smooth, as if she had known I would be thanking her. "Your birthday was good, Serena. Very entertaining."I nodded and smiled. "Sam played well," I said, glancing around at the fading lights, the laughter of the guests growing less as the evening moved on. "He's more charming than Damien."Her lips curved in smile, but she shook her head."I don't agree. They both have charisma, but just in different manners. One simply prefers to use his on women and pleasure, while the other uses his in courts."I tilted my head to the side, watching her. "You know them both fairly well, it appears.""Attempt to read Damien," she said easily. "But Sam? Too open. A simple book."I grinned once more, though something within me twisted.

  • Chasing Back The Woman He Destroyed   Chapter 164

Serena's POVMy heart gave a sharp, nervous thud. I turned my head slightly, and sure enough, there he was, moving through the tables, smiling confidently. Guests whispered and stared as if he were the star of the night instead of us.I breathed a little sigh of relief when I saw Sam stop Alexander. Finally, Sam did something useful tonight. Sophia whispered the same in my ear, and we had a quiet smile exchanged. In no time, Ella joined Sam. The two of them began talking to Alexander as if they wanted to get to know him. At least it kept him occupied and away from me for a few minutes."Serena, I must be off now. It was lovely being here," Mrs. Simpson's voice broke into my thoughts.I turned to her and smiled warmly. "Thank you ever so much for dropping by, Mrs. Simpson. It really did mean a lot."We stepped outside together. Mr. Simpson was already standing by the car, talking to Damien. I stood with them there until the couple got into their car.I waved goodbye as they pulled awa

  • Chasing Back The Woman He Destroyed   Chapter 163

Serena's POV Sophia’s wide eyes mirrored my own, and even though neither of us spoke, I knew we were both thinking the same thing: trouble. But when we pushed open the doors and stepped outside, the truth unraveled in bursts of Fireworks. Not gunshots. They tore across the sky in red, blue, golden flowers. The crowd outside gasped and pointed upward, their shrieks not shrieks of terror but awe.But even supposing the sky was flashing lights, the people's fingers finally fell to something else.I looked where they were. There lay a red carpet unrolled from the gate, so precise it appeared to have been unrolled by invisible hands. And then, without warning, the crowd started to chant, cheer, clap."Serena! Sophia! Serena! Sophia!"For a moment, I stopped. Why was everyone chanting our names?Sophia tugged at my wrist softly. "Come on, I think they're hollering for us."She said this tremulously, and against my better judgment, I followed her.We proceeded out onto the red carpet togeth

  • Chasing Back The Woman He Destroyed   Chapter 162

Serena's POVI had to give it to Sam, he had done better as a host than I had anticipated. He was witty when he wanted to be, telling jokes that made the older ladies titter and the younger crowd lean in to listen. He had been entertaining everyone for nearly an hour, and when he stood in the center of the room to announce the cake cutting, there was genuine excitement in the room. "Okay, ladies and gentlemen," he boomed, his voice authoritative but not heavy. "It's time for the sweetest moment tonight, the cake."Two waitresses brought in the most decadent cake I'd ever seen. It was ginormous, higher than I was, with the silky pink frosting and the gold design curling down its sides in climbing vines.I forgot to breathe, it was lavish, yes, but it was irresistibly beautiful.A few clapped when they rolled it to the center of the living room with care."Celebrants, step forward!" Sam announced with a wide grin, looking directly at Sophia and me.I cast a quick look over at Sophia, t

  • Chasing Back The Woman He Destroyed   Chapter 161

Serena's POVSophia’s sharp eyes shifted from me to Sam, then back again, like she was watching a tennis match.Sam didn’t answer immediately. He sat there, studying me as if he were measuring how much truth I could bear. Then he said slowly, “Because no matter how strong someone is, no matter how guarded, sometimes the person you trust most is the one who hurts you the deepest. Damien wasn’t blind. He wasn’t weak. He simply trusted her. That’s what made the wound cut so deep.”I felt a lump rising in my throat, and I quickly took a sip of wine to drown it.Trust.Betrayal.Pain that lingers long after the wound should have healed.I knew those words better than anyone.Sam leaned back again, his voice steady. “That’s what makes Damien different from Alexander. My brother doesn’t fall for manipulation. He doesn’t get deceived by flashy lies or pretty words. What broke him wasn’t manipulation. It was love.”I tightened my grip on the glass until my fingers ached. I didn’t want to hear

  • Chasing Back The Woman He Destroyed   Chapter 160

Serena's POVThat silence was enough of an answer.“I thought as much,” I murmured, shaking my head faintly. There was no point pressing him further. If he didn’t want to say, then nothing I asked would force the truth out of him.Sam shifted uncomfortably under my gaze, then broke it himself, scanning the crowd. His expression softened as his eyes landed somewhere behind me."Have you seen Pristine around?" he asked hastily, as if eager to shift the conversation from dangerous ground.I blinked at him in surprise at the sudden shift. "Pristine?""Yes," he said, eyes scanning again across the hall. "I thought she'd be here.".My brows were creased. "I don't know," I replied finally, shaking my head. "If you want her, you ought to go find her.""You see, Serena," Sam said firmly. "I see that you don't like Pristine but if I was being honest, you both look alike in some sort of way."Sam's statement struck me like a cold gust of air, uninvited and much too invasive. We both look alike?
