Cade was a simple man. He had a lovely Omega mate waiting at home for him, with two young pups and a small patch of land where he had built their home still on pack territory.

His needs were straightforward enough, the same as his job was..usually.

Except now he was trudging through the underbrush with the hosting packs' Betas son Mikhail, grumbling about having to rescue a wolf that couldn't hold his own in a fight.

As a pack warrior, the concept of being bested in a physical confrontation was foreign to him, and Cade wished for the millionth time that he had passed on this particular assignment.

Elena Carmichael did not need a guard, her powers hummed through her tiny frame, and she was a friendly wolf anyway, who didn't really make enemies.

Cade could only surmise that his Alpha wished to protect her unique abilities from being exploited, rather than any real physical threat, not that it was any of his business. A job was a job. It started when he got Elena to her destination, and if the Howling was unsuccessful, it would end when Cade returned her safely to the Windhowler pack in three days' time.

Except Elena thought this weak wolf they were on their way to help was her mate. Oh Goddess what would Alpha Eric do after learning his daughter has been fated to a much lower-ranked wolf?

The Howling was only a few hours away, if it was true, then Elena would no longer be allowed to participate, and he would have to send word back to the Alpha that she had indeed found her mate and the future Alpha of the Windhowler pack.

It was no secret that Elena was a bit of a mystery when it became clear during her youth that she was an elemental and could influence the wind. Elena had been sent into the jungle to train, she spent ten years there, mastering her craft, and only returned to her pack last year when she turned eighteen.

None of the pack wolves could hold a candle to her, she shone brighter than the sun, and Alpha Eric made sure everyone knew that she was his pride and joy, a master of her craft and a pureblood Alpha since both of her parents were alpha born wolves.

This low blood pup would have a battle on his hands to prove his worth and suitability as Elena's mate, and Cade didn't envy him, Eric could be an arsehole if he didn't like you.

"Cade, it shouldn't be much further, uh did your she-wolf tell you if this wolf had a name?"

Oh shit, that's right he had company, Cade was an introspective wolf so talking for the sake of talking didn't really appeal to him, but as yet another branch smacked him in the face, he forced himself to answer Mikhail's question.

"Miss Elena is of higher rank than yourself Beta Mikhail, she is Alpha born to two pure Alpha bloodlines, and an elemental wolf as well; failure to respect her rank will most likely cause you embarrassment when she sends you sailing into the nearest lake with.her.mind... and no she gave no name for the wolf, except to say he is her mate and currently in and out of consciousness."

Mikhail's sigh of relief didn't go unnoticed, and as they turned onto a well used walking track Cade couldn't help but throw a puzzled look his way.

"Is there something I should know Beta?"

Mikhail's ears reddened as he hastened to reply.

"No, no, no it's just that there aren't usually random attacks in our community and with so many wolves from out of town here currently, I just wonder if it's somehow related, oh and by the way, my dad is the Beta of this pack, I'm just beta in training so feel free to call me Mikhail, my mum works in the nursery, my older sister Isabella is one of the head pack warrior trainers, she is supposed to participate in the Howling tonight, but I doubt she will, she kind of prefers her own company, and my younger sister Raeanne is training at the clinic to be the next pack doctor so you'll get to meet her when we present ourselves to the clinic."

Wow, Cade thought to himself, this young pup had a lot to learn about pack politics, in the space of one sentence he had told a warrior wolf from another pack, where to locate the entire Beta family, a huge advantage to someone who wanted to wipe out the packs second strongest wolves.

"You talk too much pup" he muttered, "Did your father not warn you about giving out important members locations?''

Mikhail visibly stiffened before he replied, "My father taught me to recognise a wolf's true intentions through body language from an early age Warrior Cade, I made an assessment and found you to be honourable, are you telling me my judgement is flawed?"

Cade had no choice but to concede.

"Fair call kid."

As they turned the corner, in the dim light Cade could make out the petite form of his charge, who was currently sitting on the dirt with a young man's head cradled in her lap, they had found Elena and her mate.

Elena looked up as the smell of rainforest and raspberries filled her nostrils, and her eyes landed on the gorgeous wolf striding towards her with Cade...Wait...what?

Sephora was dancing madly in her head, trying desperately to take control again but Elena forced her back down, MATE! That can't possibly be right!

This wolf looked to be a few years younger than her, which meant he wouldn't yet feel the mate pull, but by Goddess Elena could, her pulse was racing, womanhood moistening as she clamped her legs together, a small whimper trying to break past her lips, the smell of both males combined was sending Sephora into a frenzy of lust and desire, images of both men naked taking her from behind, using their mouths and tongues to pleasure her invaded her mind and she feared she would soon lose control and give in to her wanton cravings, for Goddess sakes, one of her mates wasn't even conscious right now, and the other was too young to know, so Elena did the only think she could think of at the time, and as her eyes zeroed in on Cade's companion, they narrowed and a mini tornado spiralled out of nowhere, barreling down the track picking up the newcomer and flying him out of sight, and out of smell range, what the hell was she supposed to do now, and how could she explain to her parents that she left looking for one mate and ended up with two??

  • Chasing Bella's shadow   You promised me forever

Shadow felt his breathing begin to slow as he looked up at his mate. He tried to manage a smile, but the pain was too real, and all he could do was grimace as it arced through his torn-up body. Bella was telling him to hold on, that Valenar was reasoning with the threat, but he knew that there wasn't enough time for him, so using the last of his strength, he lifted his hand and gently placed it against her lips. "I waited a lifetime for you, my Bella," he struggled to get out the words, knowing that this was the last time he would feel her touch, "I will search through a thousand lifetimes to find you mate. You have my heart, you have my soul and no matter where you go after I'm gone, know that in your heart I'll always be here." Bella's lips trembled, and her eyes filled with tears as she shook her head at him, "You promised me forever, Shadow, please don't leave me!" As Shadow closed his eyes against the pain, he was vaguely aware of Bella's screams,

  • Chasing Bella's shadow   The choices we make for love.

Down in the cellar, the children were quiet. Some trembled while others bristled, eager to get out amidst the fray and earn their place as pack warriors. When the ground above started trembling, and the hatch heaved as though the earth itself was trying to break in, that's when hysteria hit. Onyx struggled to hold back the retired warriors and mothers whose children were valiantly fighting to keep them safe. The tension grew higher as Onyx barked for them all to calm down. Reason was rapidly going out the window, and Lucifer awakened, shining wrathfully through Onyx's eyes as his leadership was challenged. Then, out of the darkness, a clear voice rose, weaving its way through the pack bunched up in close quarters, and Onyx looked gratefully over at his nephew.Tarakona sang of times gone by, the history of the Howling warriors, and his parents' courtship. He spread calm throughout the cellar as they were all transported back to the time of Shadow and Isabella, the magic of th

  • Chasing Bella's shadow   Pyro Diego

Like the plague, Hael's anger washed through Howling, killing dozens in its wake. Pyro's magic was depleting itself quickly under the onslaught of his friend's fury, and sensing his master's struggle, Barghest's howl signaled his hellhound's arrival in Howling. Unfortunately, the boy had only lasted seconds as Hael tore his intestines out, half-crazed by the thoughts of his mate being with another man. For the first time in their lifelong friendship, Pyro doubted his ability to reign Hael in."Marie is going to make me eat my own balls," He thought grimly as his legs gave way, blood dripping from his ears as Pyro faced his death. He was lucky in the sense that while he would die in this space, as an overlord in Hade's realm, Pyro would end up back where he belonged anyway, and Marie would be waiting to tear him a new one, as she did every time he went on a jaunt with Hael. Barghest came at a run, bowling through half a dozen wolves as Pyro's magic finally deserted him. His fa

Ratchet left Sal's with a full belly and a grin on his face. Maeve was like the ray of sunshine in his life that made everything okay, and whatever it was that she was dealing with, he was sure she would slay it like she did everything else in her life.Lost in his thoughts, Ian reached his bike in no time, grabbing his helmet and pulling his bandana up to keep the bugs out of his teeth. He didn't see the freight train until it hit him full force in his side. Like a spring flinging loose from a trampoline, he sailed through the air landing heavily on his side. "What the fuck?!" He roared, reaching for his handpiece. When Ratchet found who had rammed him, his mouth dropped open, and the gun fell from his boneless fingers. It was the two giants he caught sniffing around Maeve's shop earlier on. Only now, the one called Hael looked like some avenging angel. His eyes glowed with fury, and his muscles quivered with the urge to smash someone's head in. That someone being Ian.

  • Chasing Bella's shadow   Wake up fool.

"I had to stay and run the pack!" Lucien barked defensively, crossing his arms and glaring at the pint-sized woman in front of him. Bella's eyes widened, and he swore he could see steam pouring from her ears. "I call bullshit!" She retorted, getting right in his face; her eyes crackled, and the fury held barely in check started to leak out, giving the Luna a frightening look."You haven't been running the pack," Bella brutally pointed out, "You've been curled up in your bed like a teenage girl listening to sad songs and eating ice cream. Why do you think I'm back so early?"Lucien couldn't find an answer for that. But it didn't matter because Bella wasn't finished, "You have thirty minutes to get dressed and pack a bag, I've already organized a replacement bike for you, and my strongest tracker picked up traces of her scent on the Eastern borders. Got and get your woman Lucien, before someone else claims her." She tossed him the keys to his bike and looked at her watch

  • Chasing Bella's shadow   To thine eyes be true.

The ground felt strange beneath his feet. Grass tickled his toes as he wandered along, breathing deeply of the mountainous air. Beside him strode his friend; he was aware of the appreciative stares from females as they passed by and wondered if maybe it was unusual to see humans in Howling, but then again, they weren't really human-now were they?"Of all the places Hael? I'm allowed one free pass from Hell each millennium, and you bring me to Hicksville?" Pyro Diego glanced at his friend, who didn't bother to answer, and hoped for the sixth time that venturing into a wolf pack disguised as humans was a wise choice. Shaetan only knows what Marie will think when he returns home in a few weeks, and he rather liked his balls."She's here, man, I can sense her," Hael muttered as he began to look in the shop windows, and as the demi-gods came to the one on the corner, Hael stopped and took a deep breath, a guttural growl sounding deep in his chest."This is it."
