Charles' tragic story enveloped me like a cold blanket. I couldn’t stop the chill that ran down my spine.

“I started plotting that day,” he said softly. “I made friends in prison. People who could help me when the time came.”

He stepped closer again. “I was going to make him pay. For ruining my life. For stealing twelve years from me.”

He sniffed, then straightened his shoulders. “Eventually, it was time. I got out. And I started tracking him.”

His voice had gone eerily calm now. The storm was behind his eyes, but the rest of him looked steady.

“An insider told me Kevin had returned to the US. He was back for business.”

He turned his gaze to Raven and smiled tightly. “And that was when he met you, beautiful.” He pointed at her.

Raven tensed in my arms.

“I laid low,” Charles said. “I watched. I waited. Hoping—just hoping—that maybe he’d come look for me. Maybe he’d apologize. Maybe he’d try to fix it.”

He shrugged. “But no. He moved on. Changed his hair. Wore contacts. Did everything t

  • Chasing Midnight Promises    Chapter 65: What Was Never Said

A man stepped out, fury written in every stride.Christian stepped out too.Their eyes met.It was Noah Bradford.Gray shirt hugging his frame. Sleeves rolled up. Dark jeans. White sneakers. A black designer watch flashing as he pointed toward the Jeep.“Are you out of your damn mind?” Noah barked. “Trying to run me off the road?”Christian stared him down, unmoved.Noah narrowed his eyes. “You again? From the light. ‘Time will tell.’ Are you stalking me now?”Christian said nothing.Noah stepped closer. “Answer me, jackass!”Christian’s voice dropped like frost. “You’re loud for someone who can’t drive.”“Oh, I’m the problem?”Christian removed his glasses. “Take a course. Learn your lanes.”“You better watch your—”“Or what?”Inside the Jeep, Mia scrolled her phone. But Raven...She was gone again—lost in fantasy. In a world where Christian was hers. Where Mia didn’t exist. Where his hand brushed hers on purpose. Where he smiled at her the way he never did at anyone else. A world wh

The shrill beeping of the alarm tore Christian from a restless sleep. His eyes fluttered open, dry and heavy, the ceiling blurring into shapes he didn’t care to recognize. The sound drilled into his ears, but he didn’t move, his body stiff, limbs sore from staying in the same position all night.Still on his back, arms folded over his chest like a haunted man, he turned his head toward the noise. The alarm clock blinked red across the room, far from reach. Of course it was.A low groan crawled out of his throat as he finally sat up, bones aching like sleep had never truly touched him. His thoughts felt heavy, like mud settling in his chest. He dragged himself toward the clock, shut it off with a thud, and stared at the numbers.6:10 a.m.He stood still, silent, then ran a rough hand down his face like he was trying to scrub away a memory. His shirt clung to him like regret. He peeled it off slowly, followed by his pants, the fabric cold from the air conditioning. Naked, exhausted—phys

Raven watched her quietly.“There’s nothing wrong with being in love with Christian,” she said softly.Mia’s jaw clenched.“We’re not kids anymore. You’re allowed to feel. And honestly? You need a man in your life before your private area seals shut permanently.”Mia blinked, caught between offense and laughter.Raven leaned in, her voice gentle but firm. “We’re best friends, Mia. No secrets.”She paused.“Just tell me the truth…”Mia’s breath hitched, but she said nothing.“Are you in love with Christian?”Mia looked stunned, completely caught off guard by the question. For a few seconds, she didn’t move. Her lips parted slightly, but nothing came out. Raven’s eyes bore into her, waiting. The room felt heavier now, the silence stretched thin between them. Then suddenly—“No!” Mia blurted, a bit too loudly. “Of course not! Come on, Raven.”She gave a shaky laugh, shaking her head as if trying to brush the idea away. “I don’t love him. If I did, trust me—you’d be the first to know.”Ra

Mia lay flat on her back, her arms spread out across the bed, staring at the ceiling. Right beneath her, Christian lay in the exact same position in his room. The silence in the house was thick, but inside her head, thoughts refused to rest. She had sworn she’d keep things professional. That was the rule. That was the boundary. But a few minutes ago? They almost kissed.Again.Her palms slid up to cover her face as she drew in a breath through her fingers. Her heart hadn’t calmed since the moment he brushed that strand of hair from her face. The way he looked at her… it wasn’t just a look. The air between them had shifted—undeniably charged. She had felt it. He had too.“Are you in love with Christian?” she whispered. Her voice was small, unsure. She took a slow, deliberate breath. “No.”But the silence didn’t accept that answer. The question lingered, echoing back at her.She frowned and repeated, a little firmer, “No.”Still, the thoughts came.If she wasn’t in love with him, why di

Raven stood at the top of the stairs, one brow raised. She leaned slightly against the bannister, a storm brewing behind her eyes.Christian ran a hand down his face, flustered. Then, like nothing had happened, he pointed at Mia. “Strangers aren’t allowed here!”His eyes locked with Raven’s.“That includes you too!”Without waiting for a reaction, he stormed out of the living room and headed for his room. The door slammed shut behind him.And silence returned—charged, heavy, and thick with what had almost been.Christian stormed down the hallway, past the kitchen and the quiet hum of the fridge, until he reached his room. He didn’t bother turning on the light. He just walked in and shut the world out.His room was just how he left it—still dark, save for the sliver of light coming from the half-drawn curtain. It was simple, neat, and smelled faintly of cologne and fresh laundry. A bookshelf stood tall by the corner, his laundry basket leaning carelessly beside it. His bed was perfectl

Christian slouched on the couch, eyes locked on the ceiling. Each tick of the wall clock hammered louder, the silence pressing down like a weight. He hadn't moved since walking through the front door.Noah Bradford. The name alone made his jaw tighten.Christian sat up slowly, resting his elbows on his knees. He raked his hands through his hair, fingers tugging at the roots as if trying to pull the tension out. This wasn’t just some petty grudge. It was deeper. Messier. He couldn’t take it anymore. The silence, the pacing thoughts—it was all too loud. He needed answers. He pushed off the couch and took the stairs two at a time. The hallway upstairs felt longer than usual, dimly lit by a single wall sconce that cast long shadows on the floor. He paused in the middle, right between two familiar doors—Mia’s on the left, Raven’s on the right. He stood there, heart pounding. What exactly was he going to say?How do you ask someone to tell their brother to stay away from the girl you’ve bar
