Chapter Eight:"The Impossible Choice"

My day was spent vacillating between rage and tears. The twins were infuriatingly stubborn and dense. I bitterly regretted the dinner with Killian; had I ignored him entirely, my life might still possess some semblance of normalcy. While a small, buried part of me wondered what would happen if I surrendered control and saw what they were offering, my logic thankfully continued to override my lack of inhibition.

With only an hour left in the workday, my office door swung open with a violent thud, the echo resounding like a gunshot. I jumped, glaring at the intruder who had dared to enter unannounced.

"Are you insane?"

"Mia."

Of course, it was Killian. My face was surely flushed not from fluster, but from rapidly mounting fury. "What part of 'leave me alone' is difficult for you to grasp?" I asked, my expression twisted into a scowl.

He paused, but before he could speak, I pressed on. "I can what? Fine, you’re obsessed with me. Deal with it like an adult and stop harassing me." I slammed my hand onto my desk, desperate to physically block him from advancing further into my sanctuary. He and his brother had already violated my headspace; I would not let them desecrate my safe space any further.

Kade stood behind him, silent and observant. He watched me as though I were a wild creature ready to strike. Good they should be wary.

"Don't hide, Mia," Kade said softly.

That snapped something inside me. A harsh, sharp laugh escaped my lips. "Neither of you has the right to say that."

"I do, actually," Killian countered. "You’re making a scene."

"A scene?" I gestured wildly. "You bought my company, leaked photos, trailed me into a restroom, and kicked down my door, yet I'm the one causing a scene?"

"Yes."

Ignoring his brother, Kade stepped into the room.

"Stay out," I commanded.

"I’m the CEO," he replied, a faint, fleeting smile playing on his lips. Against my better judgment, my heart skipped a beat. While Killian held back, Kade closed the distance until I was enveloped by the familiar scent of his cologne the same one from five years ago.

"This is an HR violation," I snapped, though my resolve wavered under his proximity.

"You don’t yet understand what’s unfolding," Killian said, entering the office fully. "You’re reacting emotionally."

"I’m reacting like a sane person!" I retorted.

"No, you aren't," he said simply. The silence that followed was suffocating.

"Oh my God, you're trying to gaslight me after destroying my reputation!"

Kade shot Killian a look of sharp irritation, as if to say, *what is wrong with you? I could agree wholeheartedly; Killian was infuriating me with every word. Thankfully, he seemed to gain some self-awareness, as he crossed his arms and stared at the floor. Good, because I was ready to throw hands.

"Mia," Kade murmured, his tone softening. "This is… a lot. I know that."

"You think?" I whispered harshly, my eyes cataloging his face. From a distance, the twins looked identical, as if they were the same man merely changing outfits. But after spending time with them, I noticed their distinct differences the curve of their eyebrows, the shape of their lips, and the variance in their temperaments.

"I won't justify what happened today," he continued. "But I will say this: none of it changes what I want."

Killian’s jaw tightened, accompanied by a low, sharp grunt. Kade blatantly ignored him.

"I want to take you out," Kade stated.

Just like that. No hidden subtext, no pressure, no flirting. He was bluntly, honestly direct. My breath hitched in my lungs. This was the moment I’d wanted since I was nineteen meeting my protector again and giving myself to him. It was meant to be a joyous occasion, but Killian’s presence tainted the air.

I opened my mouth to speak, my answer poised on the tip of my tongue, but then:

"I'm telling you, she’s not going anywhere with you. She’s mine."

Killian’s voice sliced through the moment like a blade. I regretted ever meeting him.

Kade’s expression hardened. "You don’t get to decide that."

"I do," Killian said, finally meeting his brother's gaze with cold, sharp eyes. "Because you aren't seeing what this is."

"And you are?" Kade challenged.

"I am. Mia, you don’t have to struggle with it," Killian insisted, stepping up beside Kade and trying to force his way into my line of sight. "I’ll make it simple for you."

My spine went rigid.

"I don’t need you to make anything simple"

"You’re coming with me tonight."

"You ARE insane. I’m not going anywhere with anyone."

His eyes narrowed. "You walked out on me once. I let it go. I’m not letting it happen again."

"We’re adults. You don’t 'let' me do anything. I do what I want, and right now, what I want is to kick you out of my office."

"Why are you trying to be difficult, Mia?"

"Oh, I don’t know. How about you try reading the awful speculations people are having about me?" I snapped.

Kade gestured for us to remain calm. I was struck by a bizarre image: Kade as the unrelentingly patient father, and Killian and I as his bickering children. It seemed Killian brought out that petulant behavior in everyone.

"Mia. I’m not going to sugarcoat anything. I want you. And I have reason to believe… Killian wants you too," Kade started.

I didn't interrupt, though I desperately wanted to. They didn't really want me; they just wanted something the other couldn't have. I was merely the object of their immature rivalry.

"You don’t have to make a choice."

Killian looked at Kade, raising his eyebrows before smirking. That smirk never boded well. What did Kade mean by telling me I didn't have to make a choice?

"You can be with both of us, separately, of course," Kade said. "And then you can make your choice."

What?!

  • Chasing The Wrong Man   Chapter 16: "Two Brothers, One Question "

I didn't find out what happened between the brothers that week until it was already decided. The week itself passed in a strange, suspended quiet. No dinners, no gifts, no flowers waiting on my desk with no card attached. For the first time since the twins had reentered my life, my phone stayed blessedly silent, and I told myself I was relieved about it even as I found myself checking the screen more often than I would ever admit out loud. Madeline noticed the shift too, raising an eyebrow every time she walked past my empty inbox, though she had the good sense not to comment on it directly.Kade told me later that it started with a drink that turned into an argument, which turned into something quieter and more honest than either of them had managed with each other in years. Two grown men, identical down to the bone, sitting across from each other in Kade's office long after the building had emptied out, finally admitting the same uncomfortable truth out loud.Neither of them was goi

  • Chasing The Wrong Man   Chapter 15: " Final Notice"

Clover showed up at my apartment on a Saturday with a bottle of wine and a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. I almost didn't recognize her at first. Not literally, of course, but there was something different in the way she carried herself lately, a brittleness underneath the usual warmth that I'd been too distracted to notice until it was standing on my doorstep holding cheap merlot like a peace offering. We'd been best friends since our first week of law school, the two of us bonding over terrible coffee and worse professors, and in all that time I couldn't remember her ever showing up unannounced before. "Girls' night," she announced, letting herself in before I'd fully opened the door. "You've been ignoring me for a walking soap opera and I refuse to let you forget I exist." I hadn't been ignoring her exactly. I'd just had very little bandwidth left over for anything that wasn't Carter-shaped. Still, guilt pricked at me as I let her in, watching her drop onto my couch l

  • Chasing The Wrong Man   Chapter 14: "Forgiven"

The silence that followed was the worst sound I had ever heard. It stretched for what felt like a full minute, though it was probably only a handful of seconds, the two of us sitting on opposite ends of my couch while the refrigerator hummed obliviously in the next room and somewhere outside a car alarm went off and died again. I watched him process it, watched the information travel from his ears down through the rest of him, rearranging something fundamental along the way.Kade sat perfectly still, his hands loose on his knees, but something behind his eyes had gone dark and distant, like a door slamming shut somewhere deep inside him."You thought he was me," he repeated, voice flat."Kade ""He knew." He rose from the couch so fast it startled me, pacing to the window with his back rigid, both fists clenched at his sides. "He knew exactly who you were. He knew what you meant. And he let you walk into that room believing it was me.""I didn't know that part until after.""That's no

  • Chasing The Wrong Man   Chapter 13: "The Confession"

Kade never finished the sentence. Killian's arrival had swallowed whatever he was about to confess, and by the time his brother finally left with a strained excuse about a forgotten meeting, the moment had closed over like it had never existed at all.I asked him again on the way out, standing on the sidewalk outside the darkened bookstore while Killian idled by his car a polite, deliberate distance away, close enough to watch, far enough to pretend he wasn't. Kade only shook his head, jaw tight, and told me it would keep."That's not fair," I said. "You can't start something like that and just walk away from it.""I know." He looked genuinely pained by it, more than the situation seemed to warrant for a man who had, as far as I knew, done nothing wrong. "Trust me, Mia. When I tell you, I want it to just be us. No audience. No interruptions."It did not keep well in my head. Two weeks passed in a blur of scheduled dinners and quiet lunches, of Killian's extravagant gestures and Kade's

  • Chasing The Wrong Man   Chapter 12: "Closed For A Private Event"

Killian's words followed me all the way home and refused to leave.Ask me again after Kade takes you out tomorrow.I turned it over so many times that night I barely slept, and by the time Friday evening rolled around I still hadn't decided what I was supposed to be looking for.Kade texted me an address instead of a restaurant name, which should have been my first warning. I typed it into my phone expecting some exclusive members-only club, the kind of place Killian favored, and instead found myself parking on a quiet side street in a part of the city I hadn't visited since law school. When I arrived, it wasn't a rooftop or a private dining room. It was a bookstore, closed for the evening, warm yellow light spilling from the windows onto the empty sidewalk. A hand-lettered sign in the window read CLOSED FOR A PRIVATE EVENT, and for a moment I stood on the sidewalk just looking at it, trying to reconcile this quiet, unassuming storefront with the man who owned half of a two billion do

  • Chasing The Wrong Man   Chapter 11: "The Red Dress"

The red dress was a mistake and I wore it anyway.I told myself it was because it was the nicest thing hanging in my closet, not because Killian had ordered it like he had any right to dictate my wardrobe. I told myself a lot of things while I stood in front of my mirror that Thursday evening, none of which I actually believed.I tried on three other outfits first, just to prove to myself that I could. A pantsuit, too much like the office. A simple black dress, too much like a funeral, which felt fitting given how I expected the evening to go. In the end I stood in front of the mirror in the red dress anyway, hating how well it fit, hating more that some small, traitorous part of me wanted to see his face when he saw me in it.My phone buzzed twice while I did my makeup. Cole, checking in from whatever mountain he was currently endangering himself on this week.Cole: Don't sleep with either twin tonight. I mean it. I will fly home just to lecture you.Me: No promises.Cole: MIA.I tur

"You can date both of us, then you can make the choice."Kade’s voice had played on a loop in my mind all weekend. Perhaps in an attempt to pacify me, they had refrained from their usual, suffocating habit of hovering wherever I went. I had enjoyed a rare, peaceful weekend, free from the constant b

  • Chasing The Wrong Man   Chapter Seven: "The Two-Billion-Dollar Muse"

Clover’s question hung in the air, sharp and heavy as a guillotine blade. I offered no answer; I simply couldn't.“I told you, Clover. I’m not with anyone. I am very single, and you know that.”I sidestepped her, my heels striking a frantic, uneven rhythm against the floor until I reached the refug

  • Chasing The Wrong Man    Chapter Six: " Glass Walls and Whispers"

The walk to my office felt akin to a funeral procession I was the corpse, and everyone was watching. The glass hallway functioned like the walls of an aquarium; the Carter twins and I were on display, the subject of everyone’s scrutiny. As soon as the office door latched shut, I spun around to fac

  • Chasing The Wrong Man   chapter Five: "The Twin Invasion "

I sat in my chair, nursing a cup of coffee that was far too hot. The previous day, the Carter twins had acquired my company, and I had promptly clocked out early. Feigning illness had been far easier than remaining on the premises. Had I stayed, I wasn't entirely certain I wouldn't have screamed
