Chapter 2

Author: Lucy Ewe
I had loved Lucas for seven years, but he had never loved me back.

Lucas was swept away by floodwaters two years ago. I swam out to rescue him without hesitation, but a tree branch broke my leg during the rescue. Even though it was reattached later, as a rising star in the national swimming team, I could never compete again.

I leveraged this debt of gratitude by obtaining a marriage contract from Lucas' grandfather to force Lucas to marry me. Even so, Anna would always interfere in the nine times we tried to get hitched. Not to mention, Lucas was always fooled by her poor acting skills.

This repeated farce turned me into the biggest joke in Riverville, yet I never cared about that. It didn't matter to me what others said or how they criticized me. I only wanted to be with Lucas.

Now, however, I was truly getting tired. I had a fever all night and only recovered the next morning.

Even after I woke up, Lucas still hadn't returned home. I opened my phone and scrolled through my feed, coming across Anna's social media post.

"I'm so happy! A mosquito bit me, and my brother was so concerned that he spent the whole night catching mosquitoes. Now, he's making breakfast for me."

The caption accompanied a photo showing a man's back as he worked in the kitchen. I recognized Lucas immediately. The comments flooded in below.

"OMG! Can I have a brother like that, too? My brother only treats me like a workhorse!"

"That's so sweet! I'm so jealous."

Anna replied to the comment shortly after: "He often rides me like a horse, too, especially when he's drunk. It always leaves me in so much pain…"

No one understood the subtle meaning behind her words, but I did. My heart ached dully, and I found it difficult to breathe.

Lucas and Anna had no blood relation. They appeared to be siblings on the surface, but their relationship transcended that.

During my two-year relationship with Lucas, he would rush to Anna's side anytime she called. He would buy her feminine products, pills for cramps, blow-dry her hair, and sleep in the same bed holding her until she fell asleep.

I had foolishly believed they were just close siblings. But thinking about it carefully, what siblings would go to such lengths?

Lucas returned home at noon. Seeing me busy in the kitchen, he walked in and embraced me from behind, resting his head on my shoulder.

"Viv, are you feeling better? Why are you cooking?" he asked while reaching to touch my forehead. "You're still a bit warm."

As he spoke, his hands began to wander. He whispered with a smile, "Let me check if you're just as hot inside..."

A wave of nausea hit me. I pushed him away and rushed to the bathroom to vomit.

Lucas frowned, clearly displeased. "Do you need to reject me so dramatically? I noticed it last night, too. Why do you feel sick every time I touch you?"

I avoided his gaze. After cleaning up, I skipped the meal and said quietly, "I need to go to work now."

Lucas was startled by the coldness in my eyes. He quickly grabbed my arm, his voice softening, "Viv, what's going on with you? Why have you been acting so strangely these past two days?

"It's not like this is our first failed wedding attempt. We can just have another one next time. It's just a ceremony! Is it really that important to you?"

"I'm seriously going to be late!" I pushed his hand away and fled from the suffocating house.

I had been working at Lucas' company after I left the national team, helping him manage it. I always worked diligently without ever asking for a promotion or raise.

Plus, Lucas had always been cold toward me. Even though the employees knew I was his fiancée, they never respected me.

"Did you hear? Vivian West got dumped by Mr. Yearwood at the altar again!"

"She's been dumped nine times already. Can this marriage even happen? If it were me, I wouldn't want to live anymore after being humiliated so many times."

As for Anna, I pressed charges against her for attempted murder. She would spend the next ten years in prison. Everything had returned to calm. But while tidying Clayton's study one evening, I discovered the crumpled marriage contract that Lucas had discarded. It was tucked inside a book on the desk.Clayton had smoothed out the contract, even gluing back a torn corner. He had flattened out all the wrinkles, which now looked brand new.My heart inexplicably trembled upon seeing the marriage contract I used to look at every night. Not to mention… The contract that originally had Lucas Yearwood and Vivian West written on it was now Clayton Yearwood and Vivian West.Besides this, I also found a photograph among his books. It was a picture of me winning the state swimming championship at 20 years old. I was holding the medal in the photo and smiling brightly at the camera.I vaguely remembered fragments of that day. It was the first time I saw Clayton. Lucas had brought him along. I

"If it weren't for you, Luke wouldn't have had my baby aborted!"My face turned bright red as I struggled to breathe. Seeing I was about to suffocate, Anna released her grip."I won't kill you myself. That would dirty my hands."You guys! Beat this slut to death, then throw her into the sea to feed the fish!" Anna commanded the thugs beside her, her face contorted with malice. As the thugs approached me with wooden clubs, I ignored the pain in my throat and tried to untie the ropes around my wrists while distracting Anna."Anna, I've already broken up with Lucas and married Clayton. I won't appear before you again! Can you try to calm down? Murder is against the law!"Upon hearing this, Anna walked toward me with a cold laugh. "You two may have broken up, but Luke still likes you! He's been unable to eat or sleep because of you."Now he's even searching through the landfill, saying he needs to find some marriage contract! He'll never look at me as long as you're still alive..."

"Lucas, it's not just a few days. It's been nine years." I reminded him. Disappointment accumulated bit by bit. "Your eyes never saw me. They only ever saw Anna! Did you ever treat me as your girlfriend? You let your friends mock me, you allowed Anna to ridicule and hurt me repeatedly, and you even slept with her!""It was just that one time. I was drunk! I didn't even know what was happening...""Lucas! None of that really matters. What matters is that you never loved me..." My eyes reddened slightly as I finally said what I'd wanted to say for so long."I love you… I love you! I love you!" Lucas repeated loudly with bloodshot eyes."My love for you is real! Everything before was my fault. "I was stupid. It's only recently that I realized that I can't live without you! Can you give me one more chance? We can start over."He placed the tarnished ring in my palm, looking at me with eyes full of expectation. "Will you wear it? Will you be with me forever?"I was silent for a fe

I didn't understand. Everything had gone exactly as Lucas wanted."You worthless whore! Why don't you just die?"Anna grew even angrier when I didn't react and raised her hand to strike me again. But this time, Clayton blocked it, grabbing her wrist and throwing her to the ground. His voice was ice-cold as he spat, "Try hitting her one more time! You're always cursing and hitting people! Has no one taught you how to respect others?"Lucas immediately sat up in his hospital bed when he heard the commotion, attempting to get up despite the doctor's objections."Is that Viv? Has Viv come to see me?"Lucas sounded excited. I walked in and saw that Lucas had bandages wrapped around his head, and his arm was in a cast. His injuries looked serious.Lucas' eyes reddened when he saw me. He said, "Viv, I knew you wouldn't abandon me. I knew you still loved me."Ignoring everyone's protests, Lucas rushed over and embraced me. Clayton's eyebrows furrowed deeply as he stepped forward to sep

Marrying Clayton was never part of my plan. I hadn't expected that Clayton would actually be willing to marry me.After all, my reputation had been ruined over the past nine years because of my devotion to Lucas. They had called me Lucas' lapdog and said no one would dare marry me in the future.Clayton's circumstances weren't bad—in fact, they were exceptional. He was not only the heir to the Yearwood Group but also wealthy, handsome, and powerful.A man like him lacked nothing. So I couldn't understand why he would marry me.Was it to make amends for his nephew's mistakes? Or maybe to silence me? Meanwhile, I was too lost in thought to notice that Clayton had already gotten into bed.Clayton was already by my ear when I returned to my senses, his lips curved in a somewhat pleased smile as he asked, "What are you thinking about so intently?"His warm breath made my ear turn red. I was startled and instinctively clutched the blanket tighter."Don't come any closer! I'm not ready

Seeing Mr. Yearwood Senior, Lucas quickly grasped his hands and said with bloodshot eyes, "Grandpa, Viv is gone. Please help me find her!"Mr. Yearwood Senior frowned at these words. "Why are you looking for her? Isn't she leaving exactly what you wanted? After all, you don't even like her!""But I do!" Only now did Lucas understand his own feelings.Mr. Yearwood Senior grew angry and slapped him when he heard this. "You fool! You claim to like her, yet you got Anna pregnant? I'll let you know. It's too late for everything now!"Lucas' pupils contracted. "Grandpa, how... how did you know?""Vivian even came to plead on your behalf. If it weren't for her, I would have beaten you to death by now!"Enough! Since you've made a mistake, you need to make amends. I've come to grant your wish—I allow you to marry Anna!"Anna was overjoyed at this news. She ran forward, clutching Lucas' arm, and said with a smile, "This is wonderful, Lucas. We can get married! We can be together forever
