Somewhere deep in the woods…

The woman paced, her voice taut with fear. "You will not touch her. I separated them. Now pray she doesn't figure it out, because the minute she does, we're both dead."

"How long do we have?" the man asked.

"If she stays with the vampires, she might never discover the truth. If someone pulls her away..." She hesitated. "Maybe a year."

"Can't you do something about it?"

"I separate them!" she shouted. "Do you know what they'd do to me if they found out?"

"Hey, it's for a good cause." He laughed. "Rich and dead."

"Good cause? You harvest organs from my people. This was a sacrifice," she said bitterly.

"And the money? Not good enough for you?"

She began chanting. The man fell to one knee before her.

"Oh, you like me on my knees begging again?" he smirked.

"One day someone will kill you," she said sadly. "It won't be me. I loved you, and you destroyed my life."

"Come on, you know I love you..."

"You're not capable of love." Her laugh was hollow. "The day I dis

  • Chasing fireflies   I found your killer

Chloe strolled into Callum’s mansion like it was just another Tuesday. Everyone stopped dead. Callum broke the silence with a laugh, pushing himself off his throne and striding over to her. He wrapped her in a hug. “My child’s back! Look, everyone, she’s here. Where the hell have you been?”“Oh, you know, around,” Chloe shrugged, then relented. “Fine, I’ll spill. First, I got a taste of the pack life, then dipped into the vampire scene with you. But I wanted to explore my witch side, so I headed down to the bayou, met up with my sisters.”Callum chuckled, though it sounded a little forced. “Great. How’d that go?”“Let’s just say… enlightening. Found out some things about myself I didn’t expect.”“Like what?” he asked, his brow furrowing.“I can pull off a few spells, for starters. Water turns this eerie blue when I step into it, spirits pop up, weird stuff, you know?” Chloe caught Arran staring at her, intense as ever. “Callum, mind if I talk to Arran for a sec?”“Go ahead,” he said,

General Hospital, New OrleansJames and his dad had always been incompatible, clashing constantly. Even though they both worked at the same hospital, it had been months since they had crossed paths. James headed to his dad’s office, and the secretary gave him a look that said, “Better wait your turn.”James laughed. “Yeah, right,” he muttered, barging into the office. His dad jerked his hand away from the computer like he’d been caught doing something shady.“James, my handsome son!” His dad stood up, arms outstretched like he was auditioning for a Hallmark movie.“Save the fake hugs, Dad. Did you get a face lift or something?”“What? No! Do I look younger?”“You look like you’re thirty. What the hell?”“New studies, genetics. I invested in it, your money too. Massive returns. You could quit your job tomorrow.”“Cool. Anyway, I’m here for some pictures. Or I can just grab them myself. Mom’s death anniversary’s coming up. I’m doing a memorial.”“Son, it’s your house. Take whatever albu

Calum’s estate"One month, you bloodsucking leeches!" Callum roared. "Where the hell is she?"Arran stayed cool, shrugging. "Maybe she needed to reconnect with her roots.""She’s not with the pack, and she didn’t even show for her dad’s funeral," Callum snapped."She’ll come back," Arran said, steadily. "I have to believe that."Callum was unraveling, and Isabella was starting to wonder if he was in love with her.She didn’t dare ask him.Deep bayou…Chloe’s scream tore through the room as another wave of pain hit her. “Come on, one more push,” Keena urged, gripping her hand. With a final, guttural cry, the baby came into the world, wailing louder than Chloe had. Estella scooped the infant up, cleaning her swiftly before wrapping her in a blanket and handing her over. Chloe traced the baby’s cheek with trembling fingers. “My love,” she whispered, kissing her forehead. Exhaustion weighed heavy on her as she sank back into the bed.Genevieve took the baby, and Chloe’s eyes fluttered shu

Callum was yelling, his voice sharp enough to cut through the chaos. Isabella reached out, her hand gentle on his arm. He turned to her, his eyes frantic.“Callum, breathe,” she said, her tone calm but firm.“Isabella, she’s gone, and these idiots haven’t got a clue where she is,” he snapped.“She’ll come back. Chloe’s a vampire first and foremost,” Isabella reassured him.Callum softened for a moment, lifting her hand to his lips. “You’re too good to me, Isabella.”Arran stormed in, his anger practically radiating off him. He was fixated on one thing, and one thing only.“Brother, any idea where she is?” Callum asked, cutting straight to the point.“No. I lost her. Don’t push me right now, I’m not in the mood,” Arran growled, his voice tight with pain.Jasmine glanced at Arran, her expression somber. She’d shattered him; he looked like a man barely holding it together.“Go,” Callum ordered sharply. “Spread out, find her, or bring me something useful. Now.”Deep bayou…Keena brushed h

Hunter’s anger was bubbling just beneath the surface, a hair’s trigger from exploding. He finally got why Liam had stormed off to confront Callum, gutsy move, claiming his mate like that. The racket outside yanked him out of his head.Stepping out, he found James planted on the porch.“Got a message for you. Inside?” James jerked his chin toward the door.Hunter nodded, let him in, and shut it behind them.“Chloe’s got a feeling she’s being watched. Sent me to tell you to meet her at Deep Bayou. Said the heart’s faded.”Hunter’s head snapped up. “Say that again.”“The heart faded,” James repeated, barely getting the words out before Hunter pulled him into a quick, rough hug.“Best damn news I’ve heard in weeks. Thanks.”“Yeah,” James shrugged, giving him a nod before heading out.Chloe stayed for the game, cheering as her favorite couple took the win. She gave Callum a nod. “You keep surprising me, you know that? Oh, and you’re loaded now, by the way,” he said with a smirk.“Yeah, I’m

  • Chasing fireflies   Ancestor's energy

"Welcome, Chloe," the voice greeted.Chloe spun around to find a woman, probably in her thirties, offering a warm smile. She motioned for Chloe to come closer.Chloe took hesitant steps forward. "Who are you?""I’m Keena," the woman replied, as four others materialized beside her. "This is our coven. We’re witches, practitioners of dark magic. Just like you, we were born with it. But you... you’ve got more power in your pinky than all of us combined.""Why did I feel like I needed to be here?" Chloe asked."This is where you belong, child," an older woman chimed in, her voice steady. "Now, come on. Spill it."Chloe hadn’t noticed the black heart on her wrist fading. The cottage was cozy; pillows tossed around like someone had lost a fight with them. Chloe reached out, brushed the dry flowers, and they suddenly bloomed again. She blinked in surprise."Yeah, you’re definitely not ordinary," the older woman said, raising an eyebrow. "This place? It’s soaked in our ancestors’ energy. You’
