Thirty five: Apology

“What's going on here?”

“Who's this middle class?”

“How did she get here?”

“Is she a thief?”

Those were the words the people around me muttered. I was helpless, sad and alarmed. This was a really great embarrassment. In my entire life, I hadn't ever experienced anything like this. 

They thought I was a thief? 

I tried so hard to prevent the tears from leaving my eyes. "Ma'am, I'm so sorry for spilling wine on your dress. I was on the phone, so it was an accident."

"How in the world did you get here?" She narrowed her eyes at me, dropped her hands on her waist. "I'm sorry, but I'm pretty sure I haven't seen this face before."

"I came here with someone," I informed her. I was sad, yet angry. Just because I wasn't as rich as them, didn't mean she had to embarrass me this much.
