I stood on the far side of the lobby and watched Eli's fingers close around Marin's hand.

He asked her to stay. I heard him from across the marble lobby.

I remained where I was.

Marin gave him a minute of her attention and his shoulders came down from around his ears.

Then Marin looked up and found me across the lobby. She stood, and the softness I'd seen with Eli was gone. Her face had returned to the composed expression she wore at work, and she walked past me toward the corridor

Weston━━❖━━I stood on the far side of the lobby and watched Eli's fingers close around Marin's hand.He asked her to stay. I heard him from across the marble lobby.I remained where I was.Marin gave him a minute of her attention and his shoulders came down from around his ears. Then Marin looked up and found me across the lobby. She stood, and the softness I'd seen with Eli was gone. Her face had returned to the composed expression she wore at work, and she walked past me toward the corridor.I let her go.Serafina reached for Eli's hand. He took it, his eyes on the plaza doors where the crowd had pinned him against the barrier twenty minutes earlier.I crossed to them."I'll handle the security detail."I crouched to get level with him. “We're going to my office. It's all right. You're coming with me.”The private elevator carried us up. My jaw stayed locked the whole ride.Miller looked up when the doors opened. "Clear my schedule for the next hour," I said. "Hold everything that

  • Chasing the Pride of Alessi    Chapter 23 Can You Stay?

    |•Marin• |The two o'clock meeting let out into a lobby too loud to think in. I went straight for the doors. The building still held what Weston had said on the stairwell landing, and I needed air that didn't.I carried those words down the hall. I'd chosen to stay and finish this acquisition on my own terms. I wasn't walking away with the work half done. But he'd turned that choice into another way to control me, making it sound like concern.Be a good wife. For now. That stayed with me the whole way to the doors. The fatigue never really left now. A dull ache sat low in my back most mornings. Two losses already sat behind me at St. Gabriel's, so I watched every step, said nothing to anyone, and told myself I only needed the company stable a little longer. Then I'd have his signature, and my own life back.I stepped onto the marble plaza.Cameras started firing the second I crossed the threshold.A crowd of photographers had already boxed in a silver sedan at the drop-off lane. Secur

Then she looked at me.I met her eyes from the doorway.I didn't speak. Her gaze remained on me for a beat. She closed the folder, slipped her pen inside, and gathered her things.I stayed by the door as she rose from her chair and walked toward me.Whitfield continued gathering his papers. Reyes was talking to Hale about the next item on the agenda. Nobody was paying attention to us.Marin reached the door.I stepped aside, letting her pass, then followed her into the hallway. She kept walking without slowing. I matched her pace."I need to speak with you," I said."I have a meeting at two." She pressed the call button and watched the elevator numbers above."This won't take much time."She didn't answer. The elevator doors opened, revealing two people from Legal, mid-conversation about a filing deadline. They went quiet when they saw us and moved to the back corner without being asked.Marin stepped in and stood near the panel. I stood near the door. The car started down. Nobody spo

Weston━━❖━━I hadn't slept.I'd tried going through the summit report around four. The numbers were unchanged. The deal was on schedule, and the fuel costs were locked in. Even if every problem on the table became a reality, the company would still make money. That should have settled it.Instead, I kept seeing her at that podium, forty minutes of questions coming at her from every side, and not once did she look for me in the room. She always had until yesterday. A glance across a crowded space. A hand finding my arm when she wanted to leave without making it an announcement. Small things. I'd never counted them until there weren't any left to count.I won't keep paying for something that was never going to choose me back.I choose myself this time.I'd heard those two lines outside Alfred's door and none of what led up to them. I still didn't know what Alfred had said back or what had brought her to that resolve. I only knew I'd carried those two sentences to the home we both share

Grandpa Alfred was quiet on the walk down to the car. He had plenty to say, but he kept it to himself.“You remember the summer you were nine,” he said once we'd reached the entrance, “when you refused to leave the estate pool until you'd swum the whole length without stopping, even after everyone else had gone in for dinner.”“You stood at the edge and timed me.”“I did.” He almost smiled. “You've always finished things you started, even when nobody was making you.”I checked my watch, hoping he hadn't noticed. “I have the investor summit. I should get up there and go over my notes ahead of the board filing in.”“Your notes.” He said it like he didn't quite believe I needed any.“Grandpa Alfred.”“Fine, fine.” He waved a hand, but he was still standing there, in no rush to actually leave. His driver pulled up to the curb behind him.“Your car's here,” I said.He turned toward it, as though he'd forgotten it was coming. “So it is.”He put one hand on the door, then stopped.“I could s

  • Chasing the Pride of Alessi    Chapter 19 What Alfred Asked

    |•Marin• |By Wednesday the building had stopped talking about it quite so loudly. The gamble had paid off. Giving the press something real to run, the shipping numbers, had pulled coverage off the marriage angle faster than a denial ever would have. Small. Real, though. I carried that the whole walk out of the room.Weston was leaning against the frame of my inner office door, past the studio, jacket unbuttoned."People are only sharing pieces of what you said Monday," he said, no greeting first. "Legal wants the whole thing written down and on record, in case someone tries to twist one clip into meaning something you didn't say.""Bill already sent it over. Every word, start to finish."He nodded, like that settled something he'd actually been unsure of. "It went well. What you did."That was as close as he'd come in three days to saying anything about it at all.He didn't wait for a reply. He was already turning down the hall by the time I opened my mouth.I'd barely crossed the do
