I didn't remember walking out of the office. The only thing I'd remembered was that I was staring at the report for one second, the next I was storming through the penthouse with the file clenched in my hand.

My pulse thundered in my ears. Every single page I'd read replayed through my head.

Jarrett had been watching me these entire eight years I thought he disappeared.

He had not only watched, but he had tracked and documented my life.

I felt sick to my stomach and humiliated.

The elevator-sized living room came into view.

Jarrett was near the windows with his phone pressed against his ear.

I didn't slow down or hesitate. The file left my hand before he could even turn around.

It slammed into his chest, the papers exploding everywhere, white sheets scattering across the floor like snow.

Jarrett's head snapped up. The phone lowered slowly from his ear and our eyes locked.

"What the hell is this?"

My voice cracked through the room.

Jarrett's gaze flickered downward toward the documents.

I laughed bitterly. "Surprised?"

He didn't speak.

I marched forward. "Talk."

His jaw clenched. "Helena, this isn't what it looks like....I...."

"No." I cut him off instantly. "Do not stand there and tell me this isn't exactly what it looks like."

"Was I some kind of experiment?" The question echoed through the penthouse.

Jarrett froze. The silence that followed was answer enough.

My stomach twisted. "Oh my God." I took a step backward. "Oh my God."

His face darkened. "Helena."

"Was I?" My voice rose. "Were you studying me?"

"No." The answer came immediately.

Something in his expression cracked, the composure he'd worn since returning finally began to fracture.

"I was protecting you."

I stared at him then laughed but the sound came out harsh and broken.

"Protecting me?"

The irony was almost unbearable. "You disappeared." My throat tightened. "You abandoned me." The words hurt, even now, after everything. "You left me alone."

Pain flashed through his eyes.

Jarrett dragged a hand through his hair. Frustration bled into every movement.

"I never stopped watching." He confessed.

My chest tightened. "What?"

His steady gaze held mine. "I never stopped watching." He repeated.

A chill crawled down my spine. The room suddenly felt colder.

"I only tracked threats." His words sounded insane yet somehow I knew he was telling the truth.

"I monitored anyone who got too close." His voice lowered. "I made sure nobody touched you."

The confession terrified me because it meant the file was real. All of it.

My mouth felt dry. "Why?" The question emerged as a whisper.

Jarrett's jaw tightened. His eyes drifted briefly toward the scar on my wrist then back to me.

"I was waiting." His answer made no sense.

"For what?" I asked.

"For your wolf."

I blinked twice then laughed, "You're serious?"

Jarrett didn't smile or react. The laughter died instantly.

He actually meant it! Of course he did. Everything was wolves now.

I stared at him, trying to understand, trying to keep up. "My wolf." The words felt absurd. "I don't have a wolf."

His gaze darkened. "Not yet."

The answer sent unease crawling through my stomach. "What does that even mean?"

Jarrett exhaled slowly, like he was finally running out of secrets. "It means you were supposed to awaken years ago."

I thought about the report. The title... 'Delayed Awakening Signs.' Suddenly my heart began pounding.

No. No. I didn't like where this was going at all.

"What happened to me?"

His eyes dropped to my wrist. The scar immediately began throbbing almost as if it knew we were talking about it.

My skin prickled then Jarrett's expression hardened.

"That scar wasn't an attack."

The room tilted. "What?" My voice barely worked.

"It wasn't." His eyes remained fixed on the mark. "It was a claim."

Every muscle in my body is locked. "What are you talking about?"

Jarrett stepped forward slowly as though approaching a frightened animal, "When you were a child, someone found you."

A knot formed in my stomach. "Who?"

His jaw tightened. "I don't know."

I knew that was a lie instantly.

"It could have been someone who should never have found you."

The scar suddenly burned hard. I gasped, my fingers flying to my wrist.

"What is happening?" Fear finally seeped into my voice.

Jarrett noticed immediately and somehow that scared me more.

"The mark is waking up."

The words chilled me. "What does that mean?"

He opened his mouth then froze. Every muscle in his body went rigid. The change happened instantly like a switch had been flipped.

My pulse spiked. "What is it?" I asked.

Jarrett's eyes shifted toward the hallway, listening for something.

The air suddenly felt strange then every light in the penthouse died.

As soon as darkness swallowed everything, I gasped.

A thick and unnatural silence crashed down. Then a terrifying howl ripped through the building causing my blood to turn to ice instantly.

The howl echoed through the walls, the floors and my bones.

I stumbled backward. "What was that?"

Jarrett didn't answer. His entire body had gone tense, the darkness seemed to pulse around him.

Then red emergency lights flickered to life.

The penthouse was suddenly bathed in crimson. Everything looked distorted and nightmarish.

A low sound filled the room. My stomach dropped.

It took me a second to realize where it was coming from.

Jarrett!

A growl rumbled deep inside his chest. The sound raised every hair on my body.

He moved instantly, stepping in front of me. Shielding and protecting me just like that.

The hallway beyond the living room remained dark and silent, then footsteps echoed towards us.

My pulse thundered. As it took one step, then another. Whoever was walking toward us wasn't hiding.

They wanted us to hear them and make us afraid.

The footsteps stopped, then a shadow appeared at the far end of the corridor.

The red lights flickered again. And a cold voice drifted through the darkness.

"We've finally found her."

Jarrett's povI was sitting in the chair next to Helena's bed because I hadn't slept and I wasn't about to, not when her breathing kept catching like she was drowning on dry land, and then she woke up screaming like something was tearing her apart from the inside out and I didn't know how to stop it. Her skin was splitting along her ribs and shoulders, thin red lines opening up where fur tried to push through. I could see it, I could see the white of bone and then the dark of blood and then something else underneath, something that wasn't human. She was burning up, 104 and climbing, the thermometer kept beeping and the nurses kept looking at me like I did it. "Get her to St Mercy," I said, and my voice came out wrong, too rough, "now". St Mercy was a human hospital, white tiles and that fake lemon smell that made me sick. The Council law said no humans for wolf injuries but Council law wasn't going to keep her breathing, so I carried her, and wrapped her in a blanket because sh

Helena's pov The air down here tasted like rust and antiseptic.I shouldn't have been behind that glass. Council protocol said family is a liability. But Jarrett pulled rank. Or maybe he broke it. With him, the difference had always been thin.In the room below, Vanessa sat at a steel table. Silver cuffs locked her wrists to the bolts. They were already working. Her skin was red and blistered where the metal touched her. Blood ran in thin lines down her forearms and dripped onto the concrete. She looked small and nothing like the woman who had smiled at my baby shower and told me the cramps were normal.“Start talking,” the Elder said. His voice was flat. He wasn’t asking.Vanessa’s eyes darted to the camera. To me. She knew I was there. “I can’t—”“You can,” Jarrett said beside me. His voice didn’t shake. That was worse. “Or we let the silver do the rest.”A sob broke out of her. It was ugly. Real. “Okay! Okay, please. Take them off.”The Elder didn’t move. “Talk.”And she did. Word

Helena's POV I was in the ice rink alone at 2am when it happened. It was just me, the Zamboni lines and the sounds of my skates carving circles because I couldn’t sleep. My phone lit up. When I picked it up, I didn't realize there was forty seven texts waiting for me all from people I hadn’t talked to in a year. I couldn't help notice Mara's text message asking if I was truly okay. Of course I wasn't. But as I scrolled through the text messages, I realized she wasn't just asking about my well being. It had something to do with Vanessa. I clicked on the message from an unknown number and that was when I saw it. Vanessa was standing there with a cream dress and a hand on her stomach with Brent’s hands on her shoulders like he owned her. I read the text below. They were expecting a child together, they had lost one before and this one was a miracle. The rink went silent. Even the hum of the lights sounded loud.I pressed my palm to my own stomach. The thin, white scar was still t

Vanessa's POVI picked the dress on purpose because it had cream silk and an empire waist. It had the kind of cut that whispered instead of scream. It was tight enough that the cameras would ask questions in the comments, and loose enough that I could still say “oh this old thing” and laugh like it was nothing. My hair was down, combed straight and glossy. I spent 40 minutes on it. I applied a bright red lipstick on my lips before putting on the diamond studs that Brent bought me last Christmas when he was still pretending he loved me more than the headlines and the brand deals. The balcony of the Langley penthouse was perfect. The golden hour bled across the city skyline behind me. You could see the river and the stadium lights in the distance. A ring light was hidden in the potted ficus so I wouldn’t look washed out. I’d told the housekeeper to leave it there. She did without asking why.Brent stood behind the camera with his phone in his hand. He hated doing this. He said it fel

Helena’s POVThe buzzer hit and the world went white. Not literally, but the noise, the lights, the confetti cannons from the rafters all slammed into me at once. I stood behind the bench with my clipboard still in my hand like an idiot, because for three periods I’d been timing line changes and trying not to throw up from nerves. Now the clipboard was useless. The game was over. We won.The team poured onto the ice. Their helmets were off, they threw their gloves, grown men were screaming like kids. Jarrett was in the middle of it, his jersey was soaked, his hair was plastered to his forehead, and that grin breaking across his face that I’d seen in practice but never like this. A reporter shoved a mic in my face. “Ms. Helena! As team manager, how does it feel?” I opened my mouth and nothing came out. Then I laughed. “It feels like we earned it. Every single person in that room earned it.”They let me go. I was supposed to stay professional, stay on the sidelines. Be the executiv

Helena’s POVThe first thing I noticed when I stepped into the studio was the smell of cold coffee, hairspray, and that faint plastic scent of studio lights that had been on too long. It smelled like every interview I’d ever done, except this one felt different. This one felt like a trap.“Helena, we’re so excited to have you,” the producer said, touching my elbow like we were old friends. “Just a quick chat that'll be light and fun. We’ll talk about the reforms, the new policies, and… you know… Jarrett’s run.”She said his name and my jaw ticked. I smiled anyway. I had gotten very good at smiling when I wanted to flip a table.“Of course,” I said. “Whatever you want.”That was a lie. Three months earlier the league had been on fire. Emails had been leaked, executives were fired, and players were caught in contracts that shouldn’t have existed. I was the one who walked into the boardroom with a 200-page report and didn’t blink when half the room tried to call me emotional. I was th
