Helena

"Get down on your knees. Helena." I almost didn't hear Jarrett when he spoke. Only his lips were moving but I didn't hear a single thing.

"I said, get down on your knees." He repeated, tugging the front of my dress with the back of his fingers.

I snapped back to the present only to see Jarett crossing over the window. I got down on the floor slowly and kept my head buried on the ground.

My heart was hammering so hard it hurt my ribs.

The intruders didn’t look like the wolves I’d imagined from books. They weren’t big, shaggy beasts. They were men who were tall, lean and dressed in black tactical gear with their faces painted with ash in jagged lines.

One of them tilted his head when he saw me and smiled.

“The Marked One,” he said in a rough voice that sounded like he hadn’t used it in a long time. “Took you long enough to show your face.”

My breath caught. Marked One? I didn’t— I wasn’t—

“Don’t touch her,” Jarrett said in a voice that sounded layered. I remained on the floor, my entire body vibrating from fear.

Three of them moved, two went for Jarrett while the third came straight for me.

I got up immediately and tried to run but my legs wouldn’t work. He was too fast. His hand shot out and closed around my wrist.

I felt pain before I saw light exploding from my skin where he touched me. From the faint birthmark on my inner wrist that I’d had since I was born.

The force threw him. He flew across the room and slammed into the far wall hard enough to crack the drywall. He didn’t get up.

The room went dead silent while the other two

The other two attackers froze mid-step.

And Jarrett froze too.

His glowing eyes were locked on me. On my wrist. On the silver light that was still fading from my skin in little sparks, like embers.

Because I think I shouldn’t be able to do that.

I could see the mix of shock and fear on his face and the realization that whatever he’d been hiding from me was already broken.

My knees gave out and I hit the floor, the mark on my wrist throbbing hot and cold at the same time.

Jarrett POV

Years....I’d bought her years.

The prophecy said eighteen. The elders said twenty-one. I’d planned for twenty-five, just to be safe. I’d built walls around her life so thick she’d never feel the pull, never hear the call, or even know what was in her blood until I decided she was ready.

And now this. The awakening was starting already.

Helena was on her knees on the floor of my penthouse, with silver light bleeding out of her like she was made of it, and a rogue wolf across the room with a broken spine because he touched her.

That shouldn’t have been possible, not until the rite had been done and not until I was there to guide her through the first shift so it didn’t tear her apart.

But someone was accelerating it somewhere, I was sure of that. Someone was forcing her wolf to the surface before her body could handle it, before I could handle it.

Rage burned through me and it wanted out.

The claws in my hands twitched as the partial shift wanted to finish and tear through these intruders and the one who sent them and keep tearing until Helena was safe.

But I couldn’t, not if I shifted all the way. And I couldn't do that with her like this. The first awakening was fragile. If I lost control, and let the beast take over, I could hurt her.

So I held it. I gritted my teeth as my bones ached and my eyes burned gold eyes as I forced myself to stay half-human.

Two rogues were still standing, looking at Helena, then at me, then back at her. I saw the calculation in their eyes.

“The Marked One,” the taller one said again, but this time it wasn’t mocking. It was reverent and sounded fearful. “She’s awake.”

“Who sent you?” I asked in a low tone but they didn’t answer.

We moved at the same time. I hit the first one and drove him through the coffee table. The second lunged for Helena again, and I caught him by the throat mid-air and slammed him down.

It was over in seconds.

When it was quiet again, one of them was still breathing. I grabbed him by the front of his vest and hauled him up. Blood ran from his nose. His red eyes flicked past me to Helena.

And he smiled.

“You’re too late,” he whispered. “He knows she’s awake.”

A cold went through me. He?

Before I could ask who, before I could get a name or a location or anything, his jaw locked and there was a wet sound.

He bit down hard until blood poured from his mouth. He convulsed once in my grip and went limp.

He’d bitten off his own tongue. I dropped him. He hit the floor with a thud.

The penthouse was ruined. There was glass everywhere. The smell of blood and ozone from Helena’s mark. And in the middle of it all, Helena was sitting on the floor, staring at her wrist like she didn’t recognize her own hand.

The awakening had started and someone already knew.

I crossed the room in two steps and knelt in front of her. Her skin was pale, the silver mark was still faintly glowing under her skin, pulsing like a second heartbeat.

“Helena,” I said. “Look at me.”

Her eyes lifted to mine. They weren’t entirely brown anymore.

“Did it hurt?” I asked.

She shook her head. “It felt... like coming home.”

The moment those words left her lips, a look of horror spread quickly across my face.

Jarrett's povI was sitting in the chair next to Helena's bed because I hadn't slept and I wasn't about to, not when her breathing kept catching like she was drowning on dry land, and then she woke up screaming like something was tearing her apart from the inside out and I didn't know how to stop it. Her skin was splitting along her ribs and shoulders, thin red lines opening up where fur tried to push through. I could see it, I could see the white of bone and then the dark of blood and then something else underneath, something that wasn't human. She was burning up, 104 and climbing, the thermometer kept beeping and the nurses kept looking at me like I did it. "Get her to St Mercy," I said, and my voice came out wrong, too rough, "now". St Mercy was a human hospital, white tiles and that fake lemon smell that made me sick. The Council law said no humans for wolf injuries but Council law wasn't going to keep her breathing, so I carried her, and wrapped her in a blanket because sh

Helena's pov The air down here tasted like rust and antiseptic.I shouldn't have been behind that glass. Council protocol said family is a liability. But Jarrett pulled rank. Or maybe he broke it. With him, the difference had always been thin.In the room below, Vanessa sat at a steel table. Silver cuffs locked her wrists to the bolts. They were already working. Her skin was red and blistered where the metal touched her. Blood ran in thin lines down her forearms and dripped onto the concrete. She looked small and nothing like the woman who had smiled at my baby shower and told me the cramps were normal.“Start talking,” the Elder said. His voice was flat. He wasn’t asking.Vanessa’s eyes darted to the camera. To me. She knew I was there. “I can’t—”“You can,” Jarrett said beside me. His voice didn’t shake. That was worse. “Or we let the silver do the rest.”A sob broke out of her. It was ugly. Real. “Okay! Okay, please. Take them off.”The Elder didn’t move. “Talk.”And she did. Word

Helena's POV I was in the ice rink alone at 2am when it happened. It was just me, the Zamboni lines and the sounds of my skates carving circles because I couldn’t sleep. My phone lit up. When I picked it up, I didn't realize there was forty seven texts waiting for me all from people I hadn’t talked to in a year. I couldn't help notice Mara's text message asking if I was truly okay. Of course I wasn't. But as I scrolled through the text messages, I realized she wasn't just asking about my well being. It had something to do with Vanessa. I clicked on the message from an unknown number and that was when I saw it. Vanessa was standing there with a cream dress and a hand on her stomach with Brent’s hands on her shoulders like he owned her. I read the text below. They were expecting a child together, they had lost one before and this one was a miracle. The rink went silent. Even the hum of the lights sounded loud.I pressed my palm to my own stomach. The thin, white scar was still t

Vanessa's POVI picked the dress on purpose because it had cream silk and an empire waist. It had the kind of cut that whispered instead of scream. It was tight enough that the cameras would ask questions in the comments, and loose enough that I could still say “oh this old thing” and laugh like it was nothing. My hair was down, combed straight and glossy. I spent 40 minutes on it. I applied a bright red lipstick on my lips before putting on the diamond studs that Brent bought me last Christmas when he was still pretending he loved me more than the headlines and the brand deals. The balcony of the Langley penthouse was perfect. The golden hour bled across the city skyline behind me. You could see the river and the stadium lights in the distance. A ring light was hidden in the potted ficus so I wouldn’t look washed out. I’d told the housekeeper to leave it there. She did without asking why.Brent stood behind the camera with his phone in his hand. He hated doing this. He said it fel

Helena’s POVThe buzzer hit and the world went white. Not literally, but the noise, the lights, the confetti cannons from the rafters all slammed into me at once. I stood behind the bench with my clipboard still in my hand like an idiot, because for three periods I’d been timing line changes and trying not to throw up from nerves. Now the clipboard was useless. The game was over. We won.The team poured onto the ice. Their helmets were off, they threw their gloves, grown men were screaming like kids. Jarrett was in the middle of it, his jersey was soaked, his hair was plastered to his forehead, and that grin breaking across his face that I’d seen in practice but never like this. A reporter shoved a mic in my face. “Ms. Helena! As team manager, how does it feel?” I opened my mouth and nothing came out. Then I laughed. “It feels like we earned it. Every single person in that room earned it.”They let me go. I was supposed to stay professional, stay on the sidelines. Be the executiv

  • Chasing the Riot: The Alpha's Second Chance   CHAPTER 32

Helena’s POVThe first thing I noticed when I stepped into the studio was the smell of cold coffee, hairspray, and that faint plastic scent of studio lights that had been on too long. It smelled like every interview I’d ever done, except this one felt different. This one felt like a trap.“Helena, we’re so excited to have you,” the producer said, touching my elbow like we were old friends. “Just a quick chat that'll be light and fun. We’ll talk about the reforms, the new policies, and… you know… Jarrett’s run.”She said his name and my jaw ticked. I smiled anyway. I had gotten very good at smiling when I wanted to flip a table.“Of course,” I said. “Whatever you want.”That was a lie. Three months earlier the league had been on fire. Emails had been leaked, executives were fired, and players were caught in contracts that shouldn’t have existed. I was the one who walked into the boardroom with a 200-page report and didn’t blink when half the room tried to call me emotional. I was th
