This was our first home game and of course the league had scheduled it like this. It was Brent’s team, his ex’s new team with my girl on the bench. The jumbotron flashes: "WELCOME BACK COACH HELENA BROOKS." Then the camera pans to Brent in his stupid tailored suit with Vanessa behind him and a clipboard in hand and a smile that was too sharp. The reporters in the tunnel were already calling it “The Divorce Game, between the two teams.” Like their marriage was some kind of PR stunt. Helena was on our bench in the in her jacket with her hair packed into a tight bun with no makeup on and her jaw set like she was about to go to war. She looked tired, despite that she still looked perfect and at the same time, she looked like she hadn't had a good sleep in about 3 days. Because she hadn’t and I was the reason, mostly because of Vanessa. I could tell something besides the jeopardy and the jealousy was going on, something Helena wouldn't want to talk to me about. I skated a warm-up lap and the crowd booed at Brent’s team before they started to chant my name. I didn't want to look at Helena, because if I did, I’ll lose my head. It was already the second period and we were down to the second period already with 1-0. I made my way to the bench, took out some water and poured half of the content mouth then gagged for a few minutes. I swallowed before emptying the rest of the bottle into my mouth, then I heard it. “Coach Brooks missed three practices this week. Therapy appointments, apparently.” Vanessa who was leaning against Brent’s bench, talking just loud enough for the ESPN mic to catch it. “Accidentally.” she said with a dirty smirk on her face. Within 30 seconds the reporters were already swarming the glass behind our bench, holding up their cameras in Helena’s face. “Is it true, Coach?” “Are you okay?” “Is this about the divorce?” they asked all at once but Helena didn't flinch. She just bowed her head and continued writing on her board but I could see her knuckles go white. Vanessa caught my eyes and smile on her face grew. I immediately shift my gaze from her. I had to focus, the game wasn't over yet. ************ Brent’s defenseman #44 took a run at our rookie in the third. His elbow up and gave a headshot. Ref missed it, making my blood go hot, because Helena was the one who recruited that kid. Because she texted me at 2am about his skating drills, and I knew we had to let him in. I dropped my gloves before my brain could catch up. #44 grins. “Heard your girl's in therapy, Jarett. No wonder you’re so...” I didn't wait to hear the rest before I landed the first punch on his jaw and the second on his ribs. I could already feel his blood on my knuckles. Whistlings filled the arena, players were already taking their helmets off and bodies were piling on one another. I had gotten the five minute penalty box. So I say there, breathing hard, and looking through the glass. Helena was just standing, looking at me. I had expected her to cry or yell at me in frustration but she didn't. I smirked and wiped blood off my lip, then mouthed the words: "I did that for you." She shook her head but the corner of her mouth twitched. Gods, how I've missed that. After the punishment, we got back to game and won 3-2. I didn’t play the last 10 minutes but it was worth it. We all retired to the locker room at the end of the final round. The locker room was loud with music, beer and reporters trying to gather news. Amidst it all, I could hear Brent’s voice near the coaches’ offices. “You look tired, babe. Still boring?” he said. I quickly change out to jeans and a wet t-shirt before I even think and sprinted out. He had Helana cornered by the exit. The manner in which he was so close to her got me riled up. His hand was on the doorframe like he owned the space. While Vanessa was standing behind them, filming with her phone. Of course she is. Helena’s face was stone. “Get out of my way, Brent.” “You used to let me...” I grab the back of his suit jacket and yanked him back before he could finish. He stumbled back. “Whoa, Jarett. Just talking to my ex-wife.” “You don’t get to talk to her.” I growled at him. Brent laughs. “Or what? You gonna fight me too? You’re already bleeding, man.” I stepped in, raising my fist up before a security guard quickly stepped between us. Helena didn't say anything. She just looked at me, then at Brent before walking past the both of us. My facial expression was all the warning I could give to Brent before I quickly went after Helena. She was already getting into the car by the time I got to her. She had gotten into the driver's seat so I quietly settled into the passenger's seat. There was an awkward silence in the car before she said, "Tell me, Jarrett. Why did you actually leave?" I stared out the window. I thought we were already over this. "And what made you come back? Because you thought I was awakening." She answered the question herself. I let out a huge sigh and turned slowly to look at her. My eyes caught her burning wrist. Her knuckles grew whiter as she grabbed the steering wheel tighter. I couldn't let her drive at this state, she was in no condition to drive us. "We've already talked about this, Helena." I said and waited for her to say something else but she didn't. She started the car, causing my heart to begin pounding faster.Helena's pov The air down here tasted like rust and antiseptic.I shouldn't have been behind that glass. Council protocol said family is a liability. But Jarrett pulled rank. Or maybe he broke it. With him, the difference had always been thin.In the room below, Vanessa sat at a steel table. Silver cuffs locked her wrists to the bolts. They were already working. Her skin was red and blistered where the metal touched her. Blood ran in thin lines down her forearms and dripped onto the concrete. She looked small and nothing like the woman who had smiled at my baby shower and told me the cramps were normal.“Start talking,” the Elder said. His voice was flat. He wasn’t asking.Vanessa’s eyes darted to the camera. To me. She knew I was there. “I can’t—”“You can,” Jarrett said beside me. His voice didn’t shake. That was worse. “Or we let the silver do the rest.”A sob broke out of her. It was ugly. Real. “Okay! Okay, please. Take them off.”The Elder didn’t move. “Talk.”And she did. Word
Helena's POV I was in the ice rink alone at 2am when it happened. It was just me, the Zamboni lines and the sounds of my skates carving circles because I couldn’t sleep. My phone lit up. When I picked it up, I didn't realize there was forty seven texts waiting for me all from people I hadn’t talked to in a year. I couldn't help notice Mara's text message asking if I was truly okay. Of course I wasn't. But as I scrolled through the text messages, I realized she wasn't just asking about my well being. It had something to do with Vanessa. I clicked on the message from an unknown number and that was when I saw it. Vanessa was standing there with a cream dress and a hand on her stomach with Brent’s hands on her shoulders like he owned her. I read the text below. They were expecting a child together, they had lost one before and this one was a miracle. The rink went silent. Even the hum of the lights sounded loud.I pressed my palm to my own stomach. The thin, white scar was still t
Vanessa's POVI picked the dress on purpose because it had cream silk and an empire waist. It had the kind of cut that whispered instead of scream. It was tight enough that the cameras would ask questions in the comments, and loose enough that I could still say “oh this old thing” and laugh like it was nothing. My hair was down, combed straight and glossy. I spent 40 minutes on it. I applied a bright red lipstick on my lips before putting on the diamond studs that Brent bought me last Christmas when he was still pretending he loved me more than the headlines and the brand deals. The balcony of the Langley penthouse was perfect. The golden hour bled across the city skyline behind me. You could see the river and the stadium lights in the distance. A ring light was hidden in the potted ficus so I wouldn’t look washed out. I’d told the housekeeper to leave it there. She did without asking why.Brent stood behind the camera with his phone in his hand. He hated doing this. He said it fel
Helena’s POVThe buzzer hit and the world went white. Not literally, but the noise, the lights, the confetti cannons from the rafters all slammed into me at once. I stood behind the bench with my clipboard still in my hand like an idiot, because for three periods I’d been timing line changes and trying not to throw up from nerves. Now the clipboard was useless. The game was over. We won.The team poured onto the ice. Their helmets were off, they threw their gloves, grown men were screaming like kids. Jarrett was in the middle of it, his jersey was soaked, his hair was plastered to his forehead, and that grin breaking across his face that I’d seen in practice but never like this. A reporter shoved a mic in my face. “Ms. Helena! As team manager, how does it feel?” I opened my mouth and nothing came out. Then I laughed. “It feels like we earned it. Every single person in that room earned it.”They let me go. I was supposed to stay professional, stay on the sidelines. Be the executiv
Helena’s POVThe first thing I noticed when I stepped into the studio was the smell of cold coffee, hairspray, and that faint plastic scent of studio lights that had been on too long. It smelled like every interview I’d ever done, except this one felt different. This one felt like a trap.“Helena, we’re so excited to have you,” the producer said, touching my elbow like we were old friends. “Just a quick chat that'll be light and fun. We’ll talk about the reforms, the new policies, and… you know… Jarrett’s run.”She said his name and my jaw ticked. I smiled anyway. I had gotten very good at smiling when I wanted to flip a table.“Of course,” I said. “Whatever you want.”That was a lie. Three months earlier the league had been on fire. Emails had been leaked, executives were fired, and players were caught in contracts that shouldn’t have existed. I was the one who walked into the boardroom with a 200-page report and didn’t blink when half the room tried to call me emotional. I was th
Helena's pov The silence on North Ridge snapped like a frozen branch.Kade looked at his enforcers, who were still pressed flat against the muddy snow, whining in utter terror. He screamed at them, kicking the nearest rogue in the ribs. "Get up, you worthless mutts! Kill her!"The rogue only curled tighter into a ball, tucking his tail between his legs. The golden light radiating from me was too strong. My aura was like an invisible iron hand holding them down, commanding them to submit to their true Alpha.Kade realized in a heartbeat that he had completely lost control. Panic flashed across his pale face, quickly replaced by a dark, ugly rage. If his men would not finish this, he would do it himself."I should have killed you twenty years ago!" Kade roared. With a sickening crack of breaking bone and tearing leather, Kade shifted into his wolf. His fur was a greasy, matted gray, and his form swelled into a massive monster of a wolf. He was nearly the size of a grizzly bear, built
