JARETT POV

A deep silence fell over the cabin, broken only by the sound of her ragged breathing as it gradually slowed down.

Then, her back relaxed against mine just a tiny fraction.

"Again," I whispered. "Just breathe."

We stayed in that exact position for ten minutes, then twenty.

The brilliant gold in her eyes began to fade away, not disappearing entirely but softening into a warm amber that looked human again.

Her hands shifted back to normal, and she began to cry softly.

It wasn't a cry of pain, but one of pure relief.

"I truly thought I was dying," she whispered into the quiet room.

"You weren’t dying," I told her. "You were finally becoming who you are."

She turned around to look at me, her eyes still bright but completely clear.

"I absolutely hate it," she admitted. "I hate that this monster is a part of me."

"I know," I said. "I hated it too when I first turned sixteen."

"Did the feeling ever get easier?"

"Yeah," I replied. "It got easier the moment I stopped calling the wolf a monster."

She fell silent, contemplating my words, and then she gently leaned her head against my shoulder. She didn’t ask for permission, she just did it.

I remained completely still, refusing to push her or force the mate bond that was currently humming between us like a live wire.

I just sat there, letting her rest her weight against me.

Outside the cabin, the wind began to pick up through the trees.

Inside, Helena’s breathing finally evened out into a steady rhythm.

When she spoke again, the tone of her voice was completely different, sounding lower and much steadier than before.

"I can still hear the wolf inside my head," she said. "But it isn't screaming anymore. It is actually listening."

"Good," I said. "That is what real control feels like."

"What am I supposed to do with this power?" she asked.

"You are going to lead with it," I told her. "You will use it the exact same way you called that blindside play on the ice. You don’t let the wolf drive the car, Helena. You drive it."

She offered a small nod against my shoulder.

For the very first time since she came back to me, she didn’t smell like fear.

Instead, she smelled like peace, mixed with something entirely new.

She smelled like ozone, pine, and absolute power.

She smelled like an Alpha. She wasn't fully there yet, but the door was finally open.

"I saw the memory clearly when the shift happened," she whispered. "The night my parents died, it wasn’t Kade who killed them. He was actually telling the truth about that part."

My chest tightened at her words. "What did you see?"

"It was a pack of rogues," she said. "They were young, stupid, and they wanted me because of my bloodline." She swallowed hard. "And they were wearing silver weapons."

The weight of the word hung heavily between us in the quiet cabin.

"That is the real reason I panicked earlier," she confessed. "That is why I thought I was destined to become just like them."

"You didn’t become them," I said firmly. "You are nothing like them."

She lifted her head up and looked me directly in the eyes.

"Thank you," she said softly. "Thank you for not running away from me again."

"I am not running," I promised. "Not from you, and not ever again."

She reached out and took my hand in hers.

There was no forced mate bond driving the action, and no claiming of territory.

It was a matter of pure, conscious choice.

Outside, the first light of dawn began to break through the thick pine trees. A pale silver light filtered through the cabin windows, representing the morning rather than the dangerous metal.

Helena stood up, her legs a bit wobbly, but she remained standing.

"I think I am ready to face the hearing tomorrow," she said. "I think I can handle all of it now."

"I know you can," I replied.

She looked out the window toward the storage shed where the silver box was hidden, and then she turned back to look at me.

"Blood and silver," she murmured. "That is exactly what they used to kill my family."

"Yeah," I agreed.

"Then we are going to use it too," she stated firmly. "Not to hurt innocent people, but to protect our own."

My wolf let out a quiet huff of approval deep within my chest.

*****

The city smelled completely different by the time we finally returned to it.

Helena did not sleep for a single second during the three-hour drive back from the cabin. She just stared blankly out the passenger side window while her fingers tapped a restless rhythm against her knee.

Ever since our time at the cabin, her senses had become incredibly sharp and overwhelming. She could hear the internal rumbling of the car engine far too loudly, and she could easily smell the stale coffee from the gas station we had passed two miles back.

Helena Callahan was not a broken woman. She was completely awake and the world was not ready for what was coming.

Jarrett's povI was sitting in the chair next to Helena's bed because I hadn't slept and I wasn't about to, not when her breathing kept catching like she was drowning on dry land, and then she woke up screaming like something was tearing her apart from the inside out and I didn't know how to stop it. Her skin was splitting along her ribs and shoulders, thin red lines opening up where fur tried to push through. I could see it, I could see the white of bone and then the dark of blood and then something else underneath, something that wasn't human. She was burning up, 104 and climbing, the thermometer kept beeping and the nurses kept looking at me like I did it. "Get her to St Mercy," I said, and my voice came out wrong, too rough, "now". St Mercy was a human hospital, white tiles and that fake lemon smell that made me sick. The Council law said no humans for wolf injuries but Council law wasn't going to keep her breathing, so I carried her, and wrapped her in a blanket because sh

Helena's pov The air down here tasted like rust and antiseptic.I shouldn't have been behind that glass. Council protocol said family is a liability. But Jarrett pulled rank. Or maybe he broke it. With him, the difference had always been thin.In the room below, Vanessa sat at a steel table. Silver cuffs locked her wrists to the bolts. They were already working. Her skin was red and blistered where the metal touched her. Blood ran in thin lines down her forearms and dripped onto the concrete. She looked small and nothing like the woman who had smiled at my baby shower and told me the cramps were normal.“Start talking,” the Elder said. His voice was flat. He wasn’t asking.Vanessa’s eyes darted to the camera. To me. She knew I was there. “I can’t—”“You can,” Jarrett said beside me. His voice didn’t shake. That was worse. “Or we let the silver do the rest.”A sob broke out of her. It was ugly. Real. “Okay! Okay, please. Take them off.”The Elder didn’t move. “Talk.”And she did. Word

Helena's POV I was in the ice rink alone at 2am when it happened. It was just me, the Zamboni lines and the sounds of my skates carving circles because I couldn’t sleep. My phone lit up. When I picked it up, I didn't realize there was forty seven texts waiting for me all from people I hadn’t talked to in a year. I couldn't help notice Mara's text message asking if I was truly okay. Of course I wasn't. But as I scrolled through the text messages, I realized she wasn't just asking about my well being. It had something to do with Vanessa. I clicked on the message from an unknown number and that was when I saw it. Vanessa was standing there with a cream dress and a hand on her stomach with Brent’s hands on her shoulders like he owned her. I read the text below. They were expecting a child together, they had lost one before and this one was a miracle. The rink went silent. Even the hum of the lights sounded loud.I pressed my palm to my own stomach. The thin, white scar was still t

Vanessa's POVI picked the dress on purpose because it had cream silk and an empire waist. It had the kind of cut that whispered instead of scream. It was tight enough that the cameras would ask questions in the comments, and loose enough that I could still say “oh this old thing” and laugh like it was nothing. My hair was down, combed straight and glossy. I spent 40 minutes on it. I applied a bright red lipstick on my lips before putting on the diamond studs that Brent bought me last Christmas when he was still pretending he loved me more than the headlines and the brand deals. The balcony of the Langley penthouse was perfect. The golden hour bled across the city skyline behind me. You could see the river and the stadium lights in the distance. A ring light was hidden in the potted ficus so I wouldn’t look washed out. I’d told the housekeeper to leave it there. She did without asking why.Brent stood behind the camera with his phone in his hand. He hated doing this. He said it fel

Helena’s POVThe buzzer hit and the world went white. Not literally, but the noise, the lights, the confetti cannons from the rafters all slammed into me at once. I stood behind the bench with my clipboard still in my hand like an idiot, because for three periods I’d been timing line changes and trying not to throw up from nerves. Now the clipboard was useless. The game was over. We won.The team poured onto the ice. Their helmets were off, they threw their gloves, grown men were screaming like kids. Jarrett was in the middle of it, his jersey was soaked, his hair was plastered to his forehead, and that grin breaking across his face that I’d seen in practice but never like this. A reporter shoved a mic in my face. “Ms. Helena! As team manager, how does it feel?” I opened my mouth and nothing came out. Then I laughed. “It feels like we earned it. Every single person in that room earned it.”They let me go. I was supposed to stay professional, stay on the sidelines. Be the executiv

Helena’s POVThe first thing I noticed when I stepped into the studio was the smell of cold coffee, hairspray, and that faint plastic scent of studio lights that had been on too long. It smelled like every interview I’d ever done, except this one felt different. This one felt like a trap.“Helena, we’re so excited to have you,” the producer said, touching my elbow like we were old friends. “Just a quick chat that'll be light and fun. We’ll talk about the reforms, the new policies, and… you know… Jarrett’s run.”She said his name and my jaw ticked. I smiled anyway. I had gotten very good at smiling when I wanted to flip a table.“Of course,” I said. “Whatever you want.”That was a lie. Three months earlier the league had been on fire. Emails had been leaked, executives were fired, and players were caught in contracts that shouldn’t have existed. I was the one who walked into the boardroom with a 200-page report and didn’t blink when half the room tried to call me emotional. I was th
