Helena's pov

The heavy glass doors of the league’s headquarters swished shut behind me, sealing away the flashes of the cameras and the rapid-fire questions of the reporters. Inside, the grand lobby was dead silent.

It was over.

Within less than an hour of our explosive press conference, the entire sports world had completely flipped upside down. My phone was buzzing constantly in my coat pocket with breaking news alerts that were popping up on millions of screens across the country at the exact same time:

Brent had been suspended and officially banned Brent indefinitely following allegations of match-fixing and financial ruin.

Vanessa had been fired and her league management had terminated Vanessa’s contract immediately for fraud and deception.

While I have been cleared of all charges against me and my professional reputation has been fully restored

I stood in the middle of the marble lobby, taking a long, slow breath.

For months, my name had been dragged through the mud. People had whispered about me in hallways, pointed fingers at me online, and treated me like a villain.

But now, the truth is finally out. My honor was back. I wasn't just cleared; I was once again recognized as one of the smartest, most talented managers in the entire sport.

I caught my reflection in the polished glass walls. I didn't look like a victim anymore. I looked like a survivor.

Tucking my leather portfolio under my arm, I walked toward the private elevator that led down to the underground parking garage. The victory felt amazing, but I knew the air was still thick with tension. Victory always brought a storm right behind it.

Down in the lower level of the parking garage, the air was cool and smelled of damp concrete and warm car engines.

I pulled out my car keys, pressing the button. The metallic beep-beep rang out through the quiet space.

"You think you won, don't you?"

The voice was harsh, cracked, and full of poison.

I stopped dead in my tracks. Stepping out from behind a large concrete pillar was Vanessa. But she didn't look like the cool, sleek, highly polished professional she usually pretended to be. Her designer jacket was wrinkled, her hair was a mess, and her eyes were wide, red, and completely unhinged.

Vanessa had lost everything in a single afternoon. Her career was gone. Her money was gone. Her prestige was dust.

"It's over, Vanessa," I said calmly, keeping my voice as steady and even as I could. "Go home."

"Home?" Vanessa let out a bitter, wild laugh that echoed off the high concrete ceiling. "I don't have a home anymore! The league took my license. Security threw my things into a cardboard box and marched me out the back door like a criminal! And it's all because of you!"

She took three fast, aggressive steps toward me, invading my space. Her hands were shaking with pure rage.

"You think clearing your name fixes this?" Vanessa spat, her voice dropping into a desperate, terrifying whisper.

"You have no idea what you’ve done, Helena. Brent didn't just break the rules, he borrowed millions of dollars from some very, very bad people to cover his gambling debts. Dangerous people. And now that Brent is ruined and suspended, he can't pay them back."

She leaned in closer, her eyes glittering with menace. "When those people come looking for their money, they aren't just going to hunt down Brent. They know I was involved. And they know you were the one who blew the whistle. They are coming for both of us, Helena. You aren't safe. You’ll be looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life!"

The threat was heavy. A few weeks ago, a speech like that would have made my heart hammer against my ribs. It would have made me freeze with terror, but today? I didn't even flinch.

Before I could even open my mouth to reply, a massive shadow fell over both of us.

The door to the staircase clicked open, and a tall, powerful figure stepped smoothly into the dim fluorescent light of the garage.

It was Jarret. He stepped right in between Vanessa and me without making a sound, placing his massive frame like a shield in front of me.

Vanessa gasped and took a quick step backward, suddenly realizing just how small and helpless she actually was.

Jarrett looked down at her. There was not a trace of emotion on his face, just absolute, dangerous authority.

"That's enough, Vanessa," Jarrett said. His deep voice boomed through the quiet garage, rattling the pipes overhead. "You're done talking. And you're done threatening people."

Vanessa clutched her purse to her chest, her confidence melting away into pure panic. "Jarrett, you don't understand—"

"I understand completely," Jarrett interrupted, his cold eyes piercing into her. "I know who Brent owes money to. And I know that you need to get on a plane and leave this city tonight. Because if you ever come near Helena again, those bad people you're so scared of will be the least of your problems. Do you understand me?"

Vanessa swallowed hard. She looked up at Jarrett's massive frame, then peeked around his shoulder at me. For the first time, I could tell she realized she had completely lost the battle. She had no moves left to make.

Without another word, Vanessa turned on her high heels and practically ran toward the exit, the frantic clack-clack-clack of her shoes fading into the distance until the heavy exit doors slammed shut behind her.

Silence returned to the parking garage after she left.

Jarrett slowly turned around to face me. The terrifying, stone-cold look on his face instantly melted into one of deep concern and gentle respect.

"Are you okay?" he asked softly, looking me over to make sure I wasn't hurt. "She's right about one thing—Brent put himself in a really dark, dangerous place with some bad crowds."

I looked at Jarrett, then looked out into the shadowy corners of the underground garage. For months, I had lived with the fear of losing my job, afraid of ruining my reputation, afraid of what my enemies might do to me in the shadows.

But as I stood there today, fully vindicated, fully supported, and completely whole, I felt a strange, deep sense of peace settle into my chest. The fear was completely gone.

I looked up at Jarrett and offered a small, confident smile.

"Let them try," I said softly, my voice cool, steady, and unbroken. "I've spent too long hiding in the shadows, Jarrett. I'm not afraid of the dark anymore.”

Jarrett's povI was sitting in the chair next to Helena's bed because I hadn't slept and I wasn't about to, not when her breathing kept catching like she was drowning on dry land, and then she woke up screaming like something was tearing her apart from the inside out and I didn't know how to stop it. Her skin was splitting along her ribs and shoulders, thin red lines opening up where fur tried to push through. I could see it, I could see the white of bone and then the dark of blood and then something else underneath, something that wasn't human. She was burning up, 104 and climbing, the thermometer kept beeping and the nurses kept looking at me like I did it. "Get her to St Mercy," I said, and my voice came out wrong, too rough, "now". St Mercy was a human hospital, white tiles and that fake lemon smell that made me sick. The Council law said no humans for wolf injuries but Council law wasn't going to keep her breathing, so I carried her, and wrapped her in a blanket because sh

Helena's pov The air down here tasted like rust and antiseptic.I shouldn't have been behind that glass. Council protocol said family is a liability. But Jarrett pulled rank. Or maybe he broke it. With him, the difference had always been thin.In the room below, Vanessa sat at a steel table. Silver cuffs locked her wrists to the bolts. They were already working. Her skin was red and blistered where the metal touched her. Blood ran in thin lines down her forearms and dripped onto the concrete. She looked small and nothing like the woman who had smiled at my baby shower and told me the cramps were normal.“Start talking,” the Elder said. His voice was flat. He wasn’t asking.Vanessa’s eyes darted to the camera. To me. She knew I was there. “I can’t—”“You can,” Jarrett said beside me. His voice didn’t shake. That was worse. “Or we let the silver do the rest.”A sob broke out of her. It was ugly. Real. “Okay! Okay, please. Take them off.”The Elder didn’t move. “Talk.”And she did. Word

Helena's POV I was in the ice rink alone at 2am when it happened. It was just me, the Zamboni lines and the sounds of my skates carving circles because I couldn’t sleep. My phone lit up. When I picked it up, I didn't realize there was forty seven texts waiting for me all from people I hadn’t talked to in a year. I couldn't help notice Mara's text message asking if I was truly okay. Of course I wasn't. But as I scrolled through the text messages, I realized she wasn't just asking about my well being. It had something to do with Vanessa. I clicked on the message from an unknown number and that was when I saw it. Vanessa was standing there with a cream dress and a hand on her stomach with Brent’s hands on her shoulders like he owned her. I read the text below. They were expecting a child together, they had lost one before and this one was a miracle. The rink went silent. Even the hum of the lights sounded loud.I pressed my palm to my own stomach. The thin, white scar was still t

  • Chasing the Riot: The Alpha's Second Chance   CHAPTER 34

Vanessa's POVI picked the dress on purpose because it had cream silk and an empire waist. It had the kind of cut that whispered instead of scream. It was tight enough that the cameras would ask questions in the comments, and loose enough that I could still say “oh this old thing” and laugh like it was nothing. My hair was down, combed straight and glossy. I spent 40 minutes on it. I applied a bright red lipstick on my lips before putting on the diamond studs that Brent bought me last Christmas when he was still pretending he loved me more than the headlines and the brand deals. The balcony of the Langley penthouse was perfect. The golden hour bled across the city skyline behind me. You could see the river and the stadium lights in the distance. A ring light was hidden in the potted ficus so I wouldn’t look washed out. I’d told the housekeeper to leave it there. She did without asking why.Brent stood behind the camera with his phone in his hand. He hated doing this. He said it fel

Helena’s POVThe buzzer hit and the world went white. Not literally, but the noise, the lights, the confetti cannons from the rafters all slammed into me at once. I stood behind the bench with my clipboard still in my hand like an idiot, because for three periods I’d been timing line changes and trying not to throw up from nerves. Now the clipboard was useless. The game was over. We won.The team poured onto the ice. Their helmets were off, they threw their gloves, grown men were screaming like kids. Jarrett was in the middle of it, his jersey was soaked, his hair was plastered to his forehead, and that grin breaking across his face that I’d seen in practice but never like this. A reporter shoved a mic in my face. “Ms. Helena! As team manager, how does it feel?” I opened my mouth and nothing came out. Then I laughed. “It feels like we earned it. Every single person in that room earned it.”They let me go. I was supposed to stay professional, stay on the sidelines. Be the executiv

Helena’s POVThe first thing I noticed when I stepped into the studio was the smell of cold coffee, hairspray, and that faint plastic scent of studio lights that had been on too long. It smelled like every interview I’d ever done, except this one felt different. This one felt like a trap.“Helena, we’re so excited to have you,” the producer said, touching my elbow like we were old friends. “Just a quick chat that'll be light and fun. We’ll talk about the reforms, the new policies, and… you know… Jarrett’s run.”She said his name and my jaw ticked. I smiled anyway. I had gotten very good at smiling when I wanted to flip a table.“Of course,” I said. “Whatever you want.”That was a lie. Three months earlier the league had been on fire. Emails had been leaked, executives were fired, and players were caught in contracts that shouldn’t have existed. I was the one who walked into the boardroom with a 200-page report and didn’t blink when half the room tried to call me emotional. I was th
