HELENA'S POV

I woke up to the firelight and Jarrett’s heartbeat.

The cabin was still dark. The hearth had burned down to embers, but the heat was still there. His heavy arm was around my waist, sending a warm sensation to course through my body.

And I wasn’t wearing the Crown.

I lifted my head. The gold was gone from under my skin, the slight hum was gone and there was no voice in the back of my head telling me who to punish and who to spare, it was just... quiet.

Jarrett was asleep with his mo

Helena's pov Media Day before Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals was an engineered spectacle designed to test an executive’s composure. The main arena concourse had been transformed into a sprawling television studio. Heavy black drapes hung from the rafters, blocking out the empty seats of the bowl, while forty different network sets glowed under intense halogen lights. Over three hundred sports journalists, international broadcasters, and digital analysts thronged the floor, their noise colliding into a continuous, buzzing roar.I stood behind the main podium stage in a tailored maroon silk dress suit, my dark hair styled in a sharp, precise bob. Beside me, Jarrett looked imposing in a midnight blue suit, his broad shoulders easily filling out the cut, his hands resting naturally in his pockets. His presence drew every camera eye in the building before we even stepped toward the microphones.Sarah stepped up, holding a leather tablet. "The national broadcast network has the first fiv

  • Chasing the Riot: The Alpha's Second Chance   CHAPTER 165

Jarrett's pov The runway lights at the private terminal cut through the dark autumn mist like glowing runway beacons, but it wasn't the airfield lights that lit up the night sky.It was the flashing red and blue lights of fifty police escorts, and the sea of red flares, waving white towels, and roaring fans lined five-deep along the perimeter fence. When our Boeing 737 finally taxied to a stop outside the hangar, the roar outside penetrated the thick hull of the aircraft. Five thousand fans had braved two-in-the-morning mountain air just to watch our team step off a plane with the Prince of Wales Trophy.I stood near the front exit door, my arm wrapped securely around Helena’s waist. Helena looked like royalty in her dark tailored coat, her hair immaculately pinned, her eyes reflecting the dazzling flashes of press cameras gathered at the base of the mobile staircase."Look at that crowd," I murmured, my low voice vibrating against her ear. "The city hasn't slept a wink.""They have

Helena's pov Thirty-five thousand feet above the dark silhouette of the Appalachian Mountains, our Boeing 737 felt less like an aircraft and more like a floating kingdom. The Prince of Wales Trophy sat right in the middle of the executive cabin table, its polished silver surface reflecting the dim overhead reading lights and the amber glow of scotch in Jarrett’s glass. Hockey tradition dictated that players never touched the conference trophy, leaving it untouched for the ultimate prize, but nobody said the owners couldn't let it sit as the centerpiece of a private airborne celebration.I sat in the plush leather armchair across from Jarrett, my heels off, wrapped in a soft cashmere cardigan over my silk blouse. In the main cabin behind the velvet curtain, the team was celebrating with a quiet, exhausted intensity. They weren't roaring or blaring music like they did after the Chicago sweep. The physical toll of four games against Boston had finally caught up to them. Through the gap

Jarrett's pov The air inside the visiting locker room at TD Garden before Game 4 smelled of camphor, rubbing alcohol, and cold sweat.Half our roster looked like they had been through a car crash. Leo sat in his stall with black suture thread tracking across his forehead under a thick layer of medical tape. Sutter had a ice pack strapped to his thigh that was the size of a throw pillow. Dave Miller sat in the corner, his face pale, breathing shallowly while the head trainer wrapped three layers of heavy elastic compression tape around his bruised ribs. Not a single guy complained. Nobody looked at the floor.I stood in the center of the room, my suit jacket off, my hands resting on my hips. I looked every single player in the eye."They used every dirty trick in the book in Game 3," I said, my voice low, rough, and ringing through the quiet room like iron on stone. "They tried to take Leo out. They tried to break Miller's ribs. They thought if they turned this rink into a street figh

Helena's pov "Victor is downstairs in the lobby," Sarah said, stepping into our private suite at the Boston Harbor Hotel at midnight. Her tablet screen was glowing with security feeds from the arena. "He requested a five-minute meeting with you before the morning briefing."I stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the dark, choppy water of the harbor. My dark silk blouse was unbuttoned at the top, and my hands rested flat on the marble sill."Tell Victor that if he steps foot on this floor, I will have league security escort him out through the service elevator," I said, my voice dropping into a cold, lethal register. "He had his chance in the boardroom in New York. He has nothing left to say to us."Jarrett walked out of the master bathroom, a towel draped around his thick shoulders, his chest marked with the faded bruises of a man who lived on the front lines of professional hockey. He stopped, looking at Sarah, then at me."Let him come up," Jarrett said, his rough

Jarrett's pov Boston didn't just want to win Game 3. They wanted to tear us apart limb from limb. The hostile reception in their arena was brutal from the second warmups ended, but nothing prepared us for the bloodbath that unfolded on the ice. The referees let the game get completely out of hand in the first ten minutes, turning a high-stakes playoff game into an absolute free-for-all.I stood beside Helena in the visiting executive suite at TD Garden, my suit jacket off, my fists clenched so tight my knuckles turned white against the front rail. Beside me, Helena’s face was pale, her dark eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying fury as she watched the carnage below.Boston’s heavy enforcer had been inserted into their lineup for one specific reason. On his very first shift, as Leo carried the puck through the neutral zone, the enforcer came charging from forty feet away, leaving his feet and delivering a dirty, predatory high check that caught Leo flush across the jaw.The sound of t
