Chapter 2

Author: Mohini
Once I got a yes, I murmured a quick thank you and hung up.

Everyone at the law firm knew our history. The year Mom died in a car crash, Megan—who had already retired from the courtroom—stepped back into the game to handle my case.

Back then, I was just a nobody intern. She personally guided me through trials and handed me the best resources on a silver platter.

The year my career skyrocketed, she agreed to marry me.

I gave her my whole heart, managing her Calystron branch without ever asking for a dime in return. I worked myself to the point of throwing up blood and relying on medication just to cope with the crushing stress.

And yet, all that devotion meant nothing to her.

The next day, I arrived at Helmont alone.

Colleagues I used to work with were throwing strange looks my way. It felt like they were all waiting around for a circus to start.

Then, Edward walked up, looking like he owned the place, and gave me a smug smile. "Zachary, Ms. Mitchell gave me the presentation slot for today's demo negotiation. You aren't mad at me, are you?"

His eyes were glued to the thick stack of notes in my arms. I had ruined my health preparing these notes through the night.

I knew Megan doted on him, but I hadn't realized it went this far.

A dull ache flared in my chest, but in the end, I just handed the papers over.

As a fresh intern, Edward could barely stumble his way through the presentation. Yet, watching through the observation glass, Megan couldn't hide the fond, adoring smile on her face.

Meanwhile, as a senior pillar of this firm, I was reduced to picking up coffee and printing documents for Edward.

Whispers from the surrounding staff drifted into my ears.

"If anyone else messed up a presentation like that, Ms. Mitchell would've flipped the table."

"Right? She's never raised her voice at Edward. She treats him way better than her own husband."

One of them laughed and said, "Husband? In name only. She won't even pay the guy a salary. Guess she just likes the free labor."

"Hey, let's place bets on who takes home the Golden Cloud Award tomorrow. 50 bucks on Edward."

When the demonstration negotiation wrapped up, Megan walked over to me, absolutely beaming. "Edward did great, didn't he? I knew he had potential."

She couldn't hide the pride in her eyes.

But in the past five years, she had never praised me once.

If I hesitated for even three seconds in court, she would tear me apart at the company-wide meeting for being unprepared.

"Yeah," I replied flatly, then turned around to drop some files off in her office.

Frowning, Megan stared intently at my back as if she wanted to say something but stopped herself.

The moment the office door clicked shut, I clenched my fists tightly.

While organizing the documents, I saw a hidden video file on Megan's computer.

Compelled by some dark instinct, I bypassed the encryption. The next second, Edward's frantic, sobbing voice filled the room. "I didn't mean to hit Zachary's mother! The brakes failed, and I lost control of the car!

"You're the lead attorney on this case. You know how poor my family is. If I go to prison, they won't survive…"

The words hit me like a lightning strike, and my heart sank.

On the screen, after a long silence, Megan slid a liability waiver across the desk to him. "Sign it. When the trial date comes, someone else will take the fall for you."

Megan's eyes were sunken, swimming with tears, and her fingers were trembling uncontrollably."Zachary," she called out.I ignored her, but she remained relentless, shadowing my every step like a ghost. It wasn't until we reached the courtyard of my apartment building that my patience finally snapped."Do you have an ounce of dignity left? Look at yourself. How are you any different from a stalker?"Megan flinched, a painful flush rising to her cheeks. "I-I just wanted to see how you were doing. Please don't shut me out like this."I could only find her words ironic.Back then, she was the one who left me alone in Calystron, making long-distance our reality. Yet she kept Edward right by her side, only hopping on a flight to Calystron because she wanted to buy him a box of pastries. And she had the nerve to call it missing me.From beginning to end, the one doing the shutting out had always been her."Megan, don't tell me you're here to beg for mercy on Edward's behalf. Because

My former boss, Leila Burke, was the one who accompanied me out of Helmont. The moment the plane lifted off the tarmac, it felt as though all the resentment of the past had transformed into a raw will to survive. As the president of the International Bar Association, Leila had been the one to arrange for that video to play at the awards ceremony. The video showed Megan and Edward admitting to causing Mom's death, then trying to evade responsibility.Megan had a habit of keeping detailed logs for her work. She likely never expected me to stumble upon the truth hidden deep within her computer. From that exact second, any remaining love between us was burned to ashes. The awards ceremony collapsed into total chaos because of that video. Edward never got his hands on that trophy, and Megan's firm was crushed under the weight of public outrage."How can people like this be allowed to practice law? It's completely psychotic!""I can't believe someone who looks so elegant could be thi

Megan froze, staring at the screen. Even with the mosaic blur over the deceased's face, she could tell exactly who it was."Aaron… is dead?"She immediately dialed Nathan's number. "Aaron's company has been under my strict supervision this whole time. How could anyone report them? Was it an inside job?"Nathan rushed to explain, "We wouldn't dare do anything without your direct order, Ms. Mitchell. But… if I may be frank, Mr. Moore has your personal seal and the passwords to the firm's finances. Should I look into that?"Megan hesitated for a fraction of a second. She didn't want to believe it, but she managed to squeeze out, "Yes."Aaron's case was handed over to another law firm. When she tried to pull some strings to dig into the details, she found the information completely locked down."The deceased is my father-in-law! I'm a senior attorney! Why am I being barred from this case?"The case officer gave her a helpless look. "This was arranged by the victim's immediate famil

Edward's frantic sobbing echoed through the speakers on the screen. "I just hit someone by accident! I didn't mean to! Megan, please save me!"The video showed Megan holding him tightly in her arms, their posture intimately close. "Calm down. I'll find a way to save you. I'm already looking for someone to take the fall—"Before the audio could even finish, Megan rushed forward like a madwoman and yanked the power cord straight out of the wall."Who did this? Who put this video on?"The entire venue erupted into a frenzy of whispers."Oh, my God! Edward actually killed someone? Megan is a lawyer who knowingly broke the law to cover up for a criminal?""Edward is a murderer, and he actually had the nerve to come accept a legal award? How shameless!""Heh, looks like Megan and Edward have quite the special relationship. This award is definitely rigged."Hearing the mounting whispers, Megan struggled to maintain her composure. But Edward completely lost his head. His true colors f

Panic seized me, making my vision blur. I ran blindly toward the awards ceremony. On the stage, Edward was giving his acceptance speech in a bespoke suit with his hand wrapped snugly around Megan's waist.I stumbled into the venue, drawing looks of disgust and disdain from the crowd.Only Megan let out a barely perceptible smirk, clearly thinking I had regretted my departure and had come back to beg for forgiveness. But she was in for a disappointment.I bypassed her entirely and approached Edward, looking straight into his mocking eyes. "Did you abduct my father? Tell me where he is right now!"The next second, a violent shove sent me tumbling down the stage steps."Zachary, what kind of stunt are you pulling now?"My back crashed hard into the edge of a table, sending a sharp, agonizing pain through my body.Megan instinctively moved forward to step in, but Edward beat her to it, rushing down the steps to help me up."Zachary, I have no idea what you're talking about. You'r

In an instant, the blood in my veins turned to ice.The woman who had sworn up and down to get justice for Mom and me had secretly protected the killer all along.I remembered the day of the trial. I had lunged at the "suspect" in the defense dock and slapped him three times across the face.Megan had held me back, rubbing my back to calm me down. "Leave it to me. I'll make him pay."I trusted her. I handed Mom's case over to her entirely.I had absolutely no idea that the real killer was right beside her the whole time.I stumbled backward, turning around only to find Megan standing right behind me."You went through my computer?"There was panic in her eyes, mixed with blame, but not a single shred of guilt."You fabricated evidence to protect Edward, didn't you?" I asked. After a brief silence, Megan pulled me into her arms and used her softest voice to deliver the cruelest words. "It happened so long ago, and Edward already feels terrible about it. Can we just let it go?"
