Chapter 1

Author: Heisen Steele
In the gynecology department on the second floor, my widowed sister-in-law, Serena Lowe, was currently snuggled up to my husband, Neil Fischer. She was teasingly asking him to pick a name for her child.

A nurse currently making her rounds covered her mouth and giggled at the sight. "You're the most lovey-dovey couple I've seen in the entire hospital. How enviable."

My nails dug deeply into my palms at the sight.

In my previous life, Neil sent Serena to the hospital, claiming that she was carrying the child of his martyred older brother, Liam Fischer. He left me at home to go through labor alone.

I had a difficult labor, suffering a perineal tear and severe hemorrhaging during the process. Although I just barely survived the ordeal, I was left with countless health complications.

Neil falsely claimed that Serena's child hadn't survived childbirth. Then, under the pretext that my health was poor, he had me and Serena raise my son together.

I was deeply grateful back then and simply regarded Serena as an angel from heaven. I not only arranged a job for her but also frequently provided financial aid to her maternal family, who often mooched off mine.

Serena accepted everything I gave without reservation, bleeding me dry to live a posh, glamorous life.

I, on the other hand, remained blinded to the truth and ultimately met a lonely, miserable end.

Looking back now, I had truly been such a fool.

"Honey, would Liam be happy about you naming Serena's child for her?"

At the sound of my voice, Neil and Serena scrambled away from each other.

Neil's shame turned to anger, and he lashed out with accusations. "You're heavy with child, May! Why did you come running over to the hospital instead of awaiting labor at home?"

Serena anxiously urged me to go home as well. "You're close to giving birth, so you shouldn't be moving around so much lest you cause complications with your pregnancy."

I was so angry I laughed. "It's precisely because I'm worried about complications that I came to the hospital. Serena, return me the hospital bed my parents reserved for me!"

Hospitals were rare in the 1970s, and there were even fewer specialized hospitals capable of handling childbirth cases.

My parents, who felt bad for me, had gone out of their way to ask an old army friend to reserve a hospital bed for me.

In my past life, I fell for Neil's lies and willingly gave up my bed for Serena. This time, I was going to protect my child.

As soon as the words left my mouth, Serena teared up and rose to tug pleadingly at the hem of my shirt. "I shouldn't have been so pretentious. I'm just a widower, after all. I only deserve to give birth at home alone. I won't try to fight you."

"That bed was always mine—"

Before I could finish, Serena suddenly fell backward, pulling me along with her. She then let out a tortured scream and clutched at her stomach.

"Why did you push me, May? My stomach hurts so much," she cried out.

She landed on her back while my stomach struck the ground hard. A sharp pain instantly shot through my entire body.

I looked down shakily. There was a pool of blood beneath me.

Neil kicked me aside as if he didn't notice and scooped Serena into his arms. "Where's the doctor? Someone, help! My lover… Serena's about to give birth!"

Neil hurriedly called for a doctor and midwife. Nobody noticed me amid the chaos.

They placed Serena onto a stretcher wheeled over by a doctor.

Just as they were about to rush into the delivery room, I used the last of my strength to grab onto Neil's pant leg.

I begged, "Save me first. My water broke…"

Neil's gaze darted between Serena and me.

Eventually, he gritted his teeth and replied, "If you hadn't shoved Serena out of jealousy, we wouldn't be in this situation right now! Serena's not in the best health and needs a doctor present for delivery.

"Just hang in there. Once she's successfully given birth, you can have the doctor's attention!"

Mom had been seriously injured, but she was fortunate in that her injuries weren't life-threatening.A medical examination revealed no lasting side effects other than a mild concussion. My heart ached terribly at the sight of Mom's frail appearance. It was all because I was blind enough to take a heartless monster like Neil for a husband that my family got hurt.Mom waved me over as if sensing my guilt."You were very brave, May. You protected your own child. It's Neil's fault that I'm injured, not yours, so don't blame yourself," she said comfortingly.Upon hearing this, the tears I'd been holding back burst like a dam, and I started weeping uncontrollably.Mom watched me with pity and compassion.Hayden quickly tried to smooth things over."Back when we were children, you used to cry just like this when you fell out of a tree. Ms. Murray would secretly shed tears of distress for you too. I didn't expect you to still cry exactly the same way after all these years," he said aw

When Serena, who had slowly regained consciousness, heard the verdict, she wept and shook Neil."Wake up, Neil! You have to help me!"Neil jolted awake at the sound of her mournful wails. However, contrary to her expectations, he tried to distance himself from her rather than defend her."What do you expect me to do? You were the one who shamelessly snuck into my bed in the middle of the night and caused me to lose control, which is what led to this! You created this entire mess, you shameless slut, so you can face the music on your own!"Serena was so stunned that her sobs caught in her throat. "What nonsense is that, Neil? You were clearly the one who said that you'd shower me with love from now on since Liam was gone. When I told you I wanted to remain faithful to Liam's memory, you told me that I shouldn't waste my golden years away."You even said that you'd marry a more obedient woman in the future so that you could better take care of me despite her presence! I only felt sa

The racket in the hospital died down in an instant. Everyone stared fixedly at Layla.Neil, knowing the cat was out of the bag, reached out to cover Layla's mouth.Hayden sent him flying with a kick.Layla glared hatefully at Neil, who was struggling to get back on his feet. She cleared her throat and announced loudly, "Neil used to accompany Serena to her medical checkups every day. We all assumed they were a couple and even complimented them a few times, but they never once cleared up the misunderstanding!"Neil stammered defensively, "That's because Serena was carrying Liam's child, so of course I had to look after her as his younger brother!"However, nobody was listening to him, because even more nurses stepped forward to say their piece."We can all prove that they were behaving exactly like husband and wife!""The hospital bed Serena occupied was originally May's! Neil was the one who let Serena take over the bed!"Everyone's opinion of Neil shifted as soon as the nurse

Under the streetlights, Hayden gazed at me with teary eyes."If you choose to give birth to the child, I'll raise it as I would my own," he said shakily. "May, I let you down due to the undercover mission. I'll do everything I can to make it up to you every moment of every day for the rest of my life. All I ask is that you come back to me."I would be lying if I said I hadn't felt moved. After all, Hayden had been by my side for the better part of my life. But at that point in time, I was even less willing to betray my own husband. After I rejected him, Hayden knelt by the roadside and wept like a baby."May, this is my number. Even if you aren't willing to take me as your husband, I can still fulfill any other requests you have. I'll keep waiting for you," he told me before stumbling away.I simply regarded our encounter that night as a dream and never actually thought about seeking him out.I'd foolishly assumed that as long as I was diligent in looking after my marriage, I co

The moment I recognized the man in uniform, I went limp with relief. It was only then that I realized I was completely drained and that my legs had been weak and aching for a long while.Bracing myself against the window frame, I slowly slumped down and let out a long breath.Serena had no idea what happened, but when she saw the smile tugging at my lips, she pointed at me and yelled hysterically, "Look at her, Neil! She still has the nerve to smile at a time like this!"Neil raised a hand to slap me without a second thought. "You bitch! You may not feel any shame, but I do! Scurry back home right this instant!"I made no attempt to dodge. I simply stared right at him with an even wider smile.Immediately afterward, someone kicked Neil aside, causing him to slam heavily against the wall."Who dares touch me? Don't you know that I'm the plant manager of a steel mill?" he roared at the newcomer, angry and aching. The next instant, the icy barrel of a pistol was pressed to his fore

What are we going to do from now on?" she asked him.Neil placed his hand over Serena's and sighed. "She owes you the life of your child. From today onward, I'll make sure she doesn't walk all over you. When we get home, I'll personally mix misopr
