Chapter 1 First Step

Author: Perfect Timing
I blinked at the rolling comments before focusing my sights on the calm Ethan. Then, I realized I wasn't seeing things.

I turned back to Ethan. "Honey, why didn't you tell me you're heading out?"

He let out a chuckle and gently explained, "I don't want to wake you, so I left without saying anything."

I walked over and opened the car's door. "Good timing. Since I'm awake now, I'll send you to the airport."

My offer caught him off guard.

When he came to his senses, he stretched an arm out to block me. "I can drive there myself. I hate the idea of you driving home alone at night. You should go to sleep, really. I promise I'll be back with your favorite cake tomorrow night."

My smile widened. "I can't sleep anymore. Besides, it's only a two-hour trip. I can catch up on sleep later."

"Honey." He abruptly held my hands. "I don't want you to get tired from the drive. There's no one home to take care of you."

I nonchalantly reminded him, "We have a nanny at home, remember? I wonder where she's gone. Let me give her a call."

I fished out my phone and called Ava's number. I heard a ring coming from the trunk, but it was cut off as soon as I heard it.

It was barely audible.

I would've missed it if I hadn't paid attention to the trunk.

The comments materialized before my eyes again.

"Tonya nearly discovered them! It's a good thing Ava muted her phone in time."

"That's my smart girl! All Tonya has is a rich family. She can never hope to beat Ava."

I tilted my head in confusion and stared at the trunk pointedly. 'Honey, did I mishear it? I think I heard Ava's phone ringing in the trunk.'

Panic flashed across Ethan's face as he blurted, "Yeah. You must've misheard it. I don't hear anything at all."

I hummed thoughtfully before saying, "She didn't answer my call. Maybe I should try again."

He bit his lip before stopping me. "She might be asleep at this hour. Let's not wake her. We should head out to the airport now, or I'll miss the flight."

The comments gloated over his dilemma.

"I can't with Ethan. He had to swallow his pride and let Tonya send him to the airport just to prevent Ava from being discovered."

"What did Ava even do wrong? All she did was wear a revealing outfit to set the mood when making out with Ethan in the car. But now, she can only hide in the trunk."

I glanced at the trunk again, an idea forming in my mind.

If what the comments said was true, I definitely wouldn't be going anywhere tonight.

I wanted to know just how long she could stay hidden from me.

Ethan's eyes lit up with hope. Sadly for him, I crushed it mercilessly. "Check his suitcase," I said coldly. "Not one thing that belongs to me is allowed to leave this house." The bodyguards opened his suitcase and dumped his clothes all over the floor. Ethan's face turned dark with rage. "Tonya, I didn't take anything from you. I still have my pride." I shot him a lazy glance. "How cute. Have you forgotten that I bought the watch on your wrist and the clothes you're wearing? Strip." Ethan glared at me resentfully, but he still snapped the watch off his wrist and threw it aside. Humiliated and enraged, he then shed his clothes and threw them on the floor. The comments cheered. "That felt amazing. This is exactly how you deal with a man who leeches off his wife and still has the gall to act superior." "Tonya is still being too kind. She likely bought his underwear too, so he should take those off as well." "Exactly. He should walk out with nothing on so everyone can

I told my parents everything from beginning to end.… By the time I finished, both of them were red with anger. My father was the first to speak as he growled, "Divorce him. I thought Ethan was a decent man. It turns out he was just a good actor." His jaw tightened. "Thank God, you found out in time, Tonya. Who knows what he would have done next?" My mother was just as furious. "He lived off our family, used our money, enjoyed everything we gave him, and still had the nerve to cheat?" She grabbed my hand. "Tonya, don't leave him a single penny after the divorce." I nodded solemnly. That was exactly what I had in mind. I was not the lovesick fool the comments claimed I was, the kind of woman who handed Ethan money and power just because I loved him. I was plenty capable and knew how to weaponize my skills.… After I departed from my parents' place, I went back to the house Ethan and I had been living in. He was already there. He was even wearing an apron and co

The officers performed CPR on Ava right there on the riverbank before rushing her to the hospital. Ethan and I were taken to the police station. The captain sat across from us, his sharp gaze moving between our faces. "Explain yourselves. How did Ava Miller end up in your car? What were you planning to do to her?" I shook my head and repeated the same response as before. "I don't know." Ethan looked guilty as hell, but he stuck to the same story. The captain frowned. "The hospital just called. Ava had been deprived of oxygen for too long, so she might end up in a vegetative state. She might suffer lasting damage even if she pulls through." The moment Ethan heard that Ava might never wake up, a tiny flash of relief flickered in his eyes. I would have missed it if I hadn't been watching him so closely. The captain pressed on, "Ava is your nanny, the car is yours, and you expect us to believe that you have no clue why she was hiding in your trunk?" I blinked innocently a

I wrapped the dry towel tighter around my shoulders and shook my head. "It was just my husband and me in the car. There's no one else in there. Not even a pet." The officer's eyes narrowed. His voice turned firm. "Ma'am, you need to tell us if there's anyone else in that vehicle. You and your husband will be held responsible if something bad happens." I looked him straight in the eye. "I'm telling you the truth, Officer." Then, I turned to the man beside me. "Right, honey?" Ethan's face had gone deathly pale. His eyes stayed fixed on the black river, specifically on the car slowly sinking beneath the surface. I tugged at his sleeve. "Ethan, say something." He looked at me and then at the officer. His whole body had gone stiff, but he nodded a few seconds later. I nearly busted my gut trying to keep the laughter in. And here I thought Ethan loved Ava dearly. It turned out his love was very much conditional. The comments floating in front of me had already exploded. "Wh

I switch between speeding up and slowing down the car.I could see from my peripheral view that Ethan could no longer control the emotions skittering across his face. Finally, he started to retch as he shakily volunteered, "Honey, let me drive. I insist."Once again, I turned him down. "We're almost there. You should take a nap. I'll wake you up when we arrive."He froze at my words. His eyes widened at my refusal as he stared at me unblinkingly. The comments were discussing my motives."I think Tonya is tormenting Ethan on purpose. Is anyone else thinking the same too?""No way! That lovesick fool is deeply in love with Ethan. She would never make him suffer if she could help it."Just as the comments suspected, Ethan voiced their thoughts. "Honey, are you doing this on purpose?"When I saw the skeptical look on his face, I played up the dumb bimbo routine. "What do you mean? What are you accusing me of?"He kept his gaze on me. "You're a skilled driver, but you're driving r

I stepped on the accelerator, and the car sped out.It startled Ethan, who was observing the trunk through the rearview mirror. He instinctively clutched his seatbelt. "Honey, slow down! You're going too fast!"I answered calmly, "We're running late. We need to rush to catch the flight."Then, I stomped my foot on the accelerator. There was a speed bump ahead, so I finally slowed the car down.Still, he lurched in his seat.He tightened his grip on the grab handle. A wave of unease went through his face, and I could tell that he was green at the gills. If this were how he was feeling, I could already imagine how badly the one hiding in the trunk was suffering. The thuds sounded from the trunk were a symphony to my ears.I glanced at the pallid man who was trying his best to keep his eyes on the road. Then, an idea occurred to me as I asked, "Honey, did you hear something? I think a mouse has snuck into the trunk."As soon as my words left me, the noise in the trunk immediatel
