Chapter 4

Autor: Young Gent
An older customer scoffed.

"I've heard doctors are so busy they barely have time to use the bathroom. She's grocery shopping in the middle of the workday? No way she's a doctor. What a liar."

My cheek was mashed against the floor as Luke wrenched both my arms behind my back.

My phone rang.

"Hello?"

This time, Sharon didn't turn on speaker.

She didn't have to.

The voice on the other end carried across the store.

"Dr. Andersen... the child didn't make it."

Owen's voice cracked with grief.

Sharon froze.

After a few seconds, Owen spoke again.

"The woman is stable, but the man has a rare blood type. We're almost out. He might have thirty minutes." His voice was raw. "Dr. Andersen... how much longer?"

Sharon laughed.

"Nice performance. Very dramatic."

She hung up.

A second later, another phone rang.

Not mine.

Hers.

"Jack, your dad isn't with some other woman, is he?"

Whatever the caller said wiped the smile off her face.

"What did you say? My son's dead? Screw you! I hope your whole family dies!

"What a load of crap. You stole my son's phone? You're asking for it.

"That phone has GPS. Just wait till you're explaining yourself to the cops."

She stormed toward me, then suddenly froze and hurried back to the checkout.

"What are you all doing?"

The newcomer's voice was calm but commanding.

"Martin."

Sharon, Elliot, and Luke greeted him quietly.

Luke let go and stood up fast.

So Martin was the store manager.

He reached down and pulled me to my feet, his face giving nothing away.

Then he took my phone from Sharon and slapped it into my hand.

"Enough. You can go."

I stared at his smug half-smile.

Disgust and anger surged through me.

I gripped my phone, took two sharp breaths, and rushed for the exit.

I barely made it a few steps before his voice followed me.

"Avril Andersen, don't even think about filing a complaint. I know where you live."

I kept walking.

Faster.

Not because I was scared.

Because two patients were still waiting for me.

Outside the supermarket, I flagged down a cab.

I needed to get my head straight and be ready to operate.

"Norridge Hospital. Hurry, please."

The driver nodded and started to pull away when the front passenger door flew open.

Sharon climbed in.

"Go. I'm headed to Norridge Hospital too."

The cab took off.

I looked at her once, then said nothing.

I lowered my head and texted Owen to prep the OR.

After sending the text, I half-closed my eyes and slowed my breathing.

"My son's phone is at the hospital," Sharon said with a smile. "Guess the thief got what they deserved."

She kept laughing and cursing the "thief," but no one answered.

When she finally stopped, she turned to me.

"I know you're a doctor." She paused. "I unplugged the network cable. That's why the system froze.

"What a coincidence. Every time I'm working, you just happen to shop there."

Her voice rose.

"You could've bought your stuff and left, so why were you smiling so much? What, your life's that great?"

My fingers dug into my thigh, but my face stayed blank.

She stared at me.

"Hmph. Not smiling now, are you?"

She finally turned away, humming "It's a Beautiful Day."

The second the cab stopped, I paid and sprinted for the OR.

By the time surgery ended, we'd removed the metal from both patients' chests.

The adults were out of danger.

I leaned against the wall, dying of thirst. My scrubs were drenched.

"What a tragedy," a nurse sighed. "The child died, and both parents were badly hurt."

Another nurse lowered her voice.

"The adults aren't married to each other. The woman survived. I called the boy's mom earlier, and she tore into me."

I walked over and checked the child's chart.

[Name: Jack Cheney]

[Father: Robert Cheney]

[Mother: Sharon Jarman]

The nurse's words echoed in my head.

A familiar face flashed through my mind.

I looked up.

Sharon stood on the escalator, staring at her phone.

A second later, the child's phone on the table rang.

Sharon was now a fugitive.Norridge Hospital was dragged back into the spotlight. From the day I posted the truth to the day I turned in my resignation, the hospital never contacted me.That afternoon, I met Harry near the hospital."Dr. Andersen, my wife and Robert had nothing going on."Dark circles shadowed his eyes. His voice was strained and exhausted."This is all Sharon's fault. She raised me and was always good to me. But after I met Wendy, she started suspecting everything. She always assumed the worst."I looked at him and waited. Finally, Harry looked up."Dr. Andersen, can you clear Wendy's name? Sharon twisted everything and made it sound like Wendy was trying to steal Robert. If Wendy wakes up and sees all that, she won't be able to handle it."He grabbed my hand."Please. You have to save her."I met his bloodshot eyes and gently pulled away."Harry, the hospital is monitoring Wendy around the clock. Don't worry. The doctors and I will do everything we can.

"Martin, something's wrong at checkout. I should check it out," Elliot said.Martin leaned back with his feet on the desk."Give it ten minutes. Let her sweat."He meant me.Elliot didn't argue. After a few seconds, he sat back down."That girl's so fake. Always buying organic stuff and showing off by speaking another language on the phone."The camera caught Martin smacking his lips and taking a drag from his cigarette. He'd delayed on purpose. Before Elliot left, Martin said, "Restart it a few times, but don't actually fix it. Sharon knows what to do."They were in on it together. The whole thing had been staged. There was more footage from other days.I played it again and again. Each time, the chill inside me deepened.I wasn't their only victim. The others had only lost time or missed important meetings.I'd missed a surgery.A life that could've been saved. And in the cruelest twist, that life belonged to Sharon's son.My phone buzzed several times.Jordan sen

The second she finished, Harry's eyes went wide. Then he swung at her. They went at each other. While everyone was distracted, Owen and I hauled Robert back onto the bed and rushed him to the resuscitation room.Only after we were clear did security break up the fight.By the time it was over, the sun was up.I got home, dropped onto the couch, and passed out. When I woke up, my phone was packed with missed calls and messages.I opened the message from my department head, Dr. Johnston.[Avril, stay home for now. Wait for further notice.]I'd been suspended.I kept scrolling. Other than Owen's calls, I didn't recognize any of the numbers. The second I opened my chat app, my phone buzzed."Dr. Andersen, someone filed a complaint against you." Owen lowered his voice. "Sharon brought a whole group to the hospital today and caused a scene."She claimed you were flirting at the supermarket and delayed the surgery on purpose."I recorded it. Watch."I frowned at the familiar f

I was exhausted, but sleep wouldn't come."Dr. Andersen?"I sat up and flipped on the light. The nurse Sharon had attacked stepped inside."Thank you, Dr. Andersen. I almost ended up with a scar."I smiled. "It's okay. People get emotional when they lose someone they love."But we still have to protect ourselves at work."The nurse nodded and sat beside me, lips pressed tight."I heard that when she saw her son in the morgue, she just stood there for over ten minutes."Then she started crying. It didn't even sound human."She even tried to stop them from cremating him."I couldn't help feeling sorry for the boy.If I'd arrived a few minutes earlier, maybe everything would've been different.Lost in thought, I felt the nurse pat my shoulder."Dr. Andersen." She lowered her voice. "I think I heard her say your name."Be careful for the next few days. Go home and get some rest."She left and quietly shut the door.I needed to watch my back around Sharon. Just thinking abo

"Thief! You professionals are all the same!"Sharon snatched up the phone and lunged across the nurses' station, grabbing for a nurse's collar. The nurse recoiled, barely dodging her nails."Who are you?"I froze."Jack Cheney... is he your son?"Sharon spotted me. Her eyes went wide."That's right! So you're the one who told her to steal his phone?"Another nurse rushed over."Ma'am, you're finally here. Your son and husband were in a car accident. They came in around three this afternoon."She stepped between us."Dr. Andersen saved your husband. But your son..." She swallowed. "He lost too much blood. We did everything we could."The nurse had barely reached toward her when Sharon snapped. She grabbed the nurse by the hair."Shut up! Did she tell you to make all this up?"She shot me a vicious glare, then turned back to the nurse in her grip."My son is meant for great things! Nothing was supposed to happen to him!"The other nurses and I rushed in, but Sharon would
