Chapter 1

"Alpha Carl, this is going too damn far! Daisy's barely hanging on. She's still healing from everything she went through for you. And now, because Fiona got herself into some petty fight, you're just going to drop everything and run to her?

"Do you even hear yourself right now? You're putting Daisy and yourself at risk! Do you have any idea how many rival packs are just waiting for you to show your face? You're being a damn idiot!"

The voice of Axel Payne—Carl's close friend—echoed through the cracks in the wall.

I froze mid-step, caught off guard for a second.

As the most powerful Alpha in the Eastlands, Carl ruled over an empire of businesses. To keep his dealings private, his castle was riddled with hidden chambers.

Moments later, the sound of something shattering echoed through the air again.

Axel continued, "What do you mean you only ever loved Fiona? Maybe Daisy was just some Rogue you dragged in from the Borderlands, but she's spent years being a decoy, and she's never let you down!

"If you never loved her, then why didn't you let her go? If it had been Fiona in her place, you'd be dead by now!"

"Shut the hell up! If I don't paint Daisy as my weakness and my one obsession, how else am I supposed to keep Fiona off my enemies' radar? Daisy's been Luna of the Eastlands for years. It's not like I ever mistreated her!" Carl's voice came through, sharp and low.

I backed into the wall, eyes widening as the truth hit me—he'd loved someone else all along, whereas I was nothing but a decoy.

I staggered back to my room. The wound I'd earned protecting him tore open again, and blood leaked from my abdomen, but I barely felt it over the sting of betrayal.

On the nightstand, the apples Carl had so carefully sliced for me sat untouched, mocking me like some twisted joke.

He treated me like I was everything. He pulled me out of the Borderlands, made me his mate, and gave me everything I ever asked for. That kind of bold, all-consuming love sparked envy wherever we went.

As Alpha of the Eastlands, Carl ruled over ten packs and a business empire that stretched deep into the lawless Borderlands.

In just five years, I'd been abducted three times because of him, taken two knives to the gut, and thrown myself in front of a bullet. I would've died for him if needed!

I thought all his grand gestures meant he loved me down to the bone, but it was all a lie.

"Did you just go out?" Carl's voice came from behind me abruptly.

I turned on instinct. Tears still streaked my face, and I met his warm, smiling eyes.

Countless times, I'd told myself I was one of the lucky ones. I told myself that the Moon Goddess had smiled on me, giving me someone as perfect and exceptional as Carl for a mate.

But now, for the first time, I saw that cold look in his eyes that made my blood run still.

"Daisy, are you scared of me? Where did you just go?" Carl questioned.

He was too astute.

I managed a smile. "I woke up and you were gone, so I went looking. It freaked me out a little, that's all."

One week—that was all it took to go from a nameless Omega Rogue scraping by on the Borderlands to being mated to the most powerful Alpha in all of the Eastlands.

After that first abduction, the fear never really left me. It clung to my bones. Anytime Carl wasn't near, panic crept in, and I'd start to shake.

He didn't question it. He just stroked my hair to quiet the storm in me.

His fingers found my jaw, trailing softly along the curve before brushing my ear. He then slid down my neck, tracing the length of my spine.

I drew in a sharp breath, and a tremor ran through me. Finally, his hand settled at my waist, its warmth setting fire to every nerve beneath my skin.

"I'll be gone tomorrow. Be good and wait for me at home," he said.

Carl pressed a kiss to the corner of my lips, his breath hot against my ear as the words melted into me like a brand.

A shiver ran through me. I clung to his shirt, my voice barely a whisper as I said, "Carl, my wound still hurts..."

He pulled my top over my head, brows knitting together when he saw the bloodied bandages beneath.

"Daisy, you're always getting hurt. I have urgent business to attend to. You've got to start taking better care of yourself."

Carl's touch was gentle as he replaced the bandages and smoothed on the ointment. There was real concern in his eyes, but the words I'd overheard kept replaying in my mind.

Why was he leaving tomorrow? Was it to see Fiona Barone, the woman he truly loved and the one I'd nearly died trying to protect?

  • Cherished and Chased Away   Chapter 9

Carl wouldn't stop calling in the days that followed, but I let every call go to voicemail. Eventually, he started writing to me in any way he could. There were always these wide-eyed pups who'd show up with his letters and read them to me. Professor Reed had taken them in, and they were like me, Rogues born from the Borderlands.Carl said he'd loved me all along and that he just hadn't realized it until now. He said he couldn't sleep without seeing me and that somehow, I'd become woven into his everyday and very being. It made me sick to hear it.At first, I had the pups write him back, telling him to leave me alone and that there was nothing left between us. After that, I just shut myself off from the world.I threw myself into studying medicinal herbs with Professor Reed, and we worked on new potions. The days dragged by peacefully. I thought I'd never see Carl again. But I did, one year later, at his funeral."Can you believe Alpha Carl's gone? He was so young.""Right?

  • Cherished and Chased Away   Chapter 8

To get Carl's attention, Fiona jumped off a cliff. He never came for her, and just like that, her life was over.…Two weeks later, I was out checking on a new medicinal herb when I found out she was dead.Professor Reed was the one who broke the news. He let out a sigh, saying how life could turn on a dime and how people change without warning.I muttered something in return. Fiona and Carl felt like names from another life. They were far-off echoes I could barely place anymore."Daisy," a voice called out behind me.I turned, and my expression went cold.Carl was already charging toward me. I slammed the door, but he jammed his hand into the gap just in time. His fingers were crushed instantly, and the skin turned an ugly blue.He clenched his jaw, refusing to let go even as the pain twisted his face. "Just let me talk to you, please?"His voice sounded almost pleading.I froze. Was this really Carl?I could feel my coworkers' eyes on us. I didn't have a choice, so I opene

  • Cherished and Chased Away   Chapter 7

Carl felt like a boulder was pressing down on his chest. He'd never stopped to think about how I felt. Now that I was gone, the regret finally sank in.Little by little, the memory of our first meeting crept back into his mind.I told him, bouquet in hand, that all I ever wanted was a quiet life—simple meals, calm days, a few cats, and a place by the sea where I could watch the sun go down and study medicinal herbs occasionally. But after we got together, that life never came even once.…The castle was deathly quiet at night. Carl drank alone, one bottle after another. He kept checking his phone and scrolling through old messages he used to find annoying. Now, they felt like rare treasures he couldn't stop rereading. For days, the only calls he'd answer were the ones about me. He even hung up on Fiona without a second thought. Then came a report from one of his men—the last message sent from my deactivated number had gone to Fiona.Carl's instincts went on high alert. He knew

  • Cherished and Chased Away   Chapter 6

After Axel left, Carl sat alone in the deathly quiet castle hall. That rough little collection of jewelry, all thrown together from scraps, had somehow become the last thing he had to cling to me.He reached out and touched the jewelry, but jerked his hand back suddenly. It was as though my love was still burning in every piece and had scorched him.The pages of the diary fluttered as the wind turned them, one by one.A vision blurred into focus in Carl's eyes. It was me, standing in the study, as I became overwhelmed with despair the moment I saw the diary."Daisy, why didn't I see it sooner? All those years, all those days and nights, I was already in love with you. I just kept lying to myself. And I hurt you because of it," Carl murmured.Tears spilled down his cheeks. He buried his head in his hands, choking on regret and grief. He'd rip his old self apart in a heartbeat if it could undo the damage. But it was too late.…By the time Carl's men got to the airport, my plane

  • Cherished and Chased Away   Chapter 5

Carl's fingers clenched around his phone. The word "bond-breaking" kept echoing in his head. Now he finally got why I'd been acting so off in the past few days—I'd been getting ready to leave him. However, what hit him hardest was that I was the one who wanted to break the mate bond. That didn't sound like the same person who used to love him so much. After all, I would've taken a bullet for him."What did you just say? Say it again." Carl's voice was low and deliberate. On the other end of the line, Axel was gradually breaking down. His words were thick with panic and tears."Carl, I can't reach Daisy. A lawyer showed up, left a bond-breaking agreement, and walked out. There was also an asset division agreement. It listed the company you set up for Fiona in the Borderlands."What if Daisy found out you used her as a decoy? She's been with you for five years. She knows everything. If she loses it and spills everything, and the rival packs get wind of it, we're—""Shut the hell u

  • Cherished and Chased Away   Chapter 4

Fiona picked the meeting spot—the biggest five-star restaurant in all of Eastlands. From behind the privacy screen, I heard the sound of ragged breathing."Will you just listen to me? It's not safe being around me."I'd seen Carl in all kinds of moods, but I'd never heard him sound so helpless."I missed you too much, Carl. I'm about to bond with someone else, and you still won't even look at me. Have you really fallen for her? That Rogue you dragged in from the Borderlands?" Fiona accused."Don't be ridiculous. Everything I've done was to keep you safe."They whispered sweet nothings until Carl finally pulled away, reluctant to leave. He was always on edge, but this time, he hadn't even noticed the extra presence just beyond the screen.Fiona stepped out from behind the screen, her eyes gleaming with the smug satisfaction of someone who knew she'd already won.Her skin glowed, her outfit flowed with effortless grace, and every move she made carried a quiet, confident allure.
