Chapter 1

"W-What are you talking about?" Jordan Shaw's voice shook, but he still forced himself to sound indignant. "You're my brother, Julian. I'm thrilled that you're back. Why would I slip an aphrodisiac into your tea?"

I covered my burning face and blinked. "Oh, so it was an aphrodisiac."

I turned to my elder sister, Jamie Shaw, who was a trained physician. "Jamie, could you check me? Let's see if Jordan's right. He figured it out awfully fast."

She looked me over, her brows knitting together. The moment she turned to Jordan, doubt written on her face, his face fell.

He put on a wounded look and said, "I'm not a Shaw by blood. Of course you'd suspect me."

Jamie had always doted on him, so she instantly softened. "Jordan, that's not what I meant. Whether Julian returns or not, you're the brother I've always known."

I'd never lacked for love growing up in the bandit stronghold, but watching this scene still left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Jordan shot me a smug look, his smile becoming even gentler than usual. "Julian, this has to be the work of some clueless servant trying to drive a wedge between us. Once I find out who did it, I'll skin them alive."

He paused, his tone turning menacing. "If this person steps forward now, I might spare them. Otherwise…"

I just watched his performance, saying nothing.

Under Jordan's threat, one of the maids behind me suddenly dropped to her knees with a thud, her face drained of color. "Mr. Jordan, it was Mr. Julian who made me do this to frame you. He wanted to use this to win Lord and Lady Shaw's sympathy and gain their favor."

Her voice broke as she removed a small sachet containing the aphrodisiac from her sash.

I clicked my tongue. My second-in-command at the bandit stronghold, Greg Brown, was right. City folks really were scheming as hell.

As the maid choked out her explanation, the crowd that had followed Jordan here to witness my supposed disgrace broke into low whispers.

"Tsk. You really can't expect proper upbringing from someone raised in a bandit stronghold, can you? Look at him, pouncing on every woman he sees. He even stooped to using an aphrodisiac."

Jordan sighed right on cue. "Julian, I can leave if you don't like me. You don't need to risk ruining your own reputation like this."

Father and Mother had rushed over at the commotion. Their faces instantly darkened at Jordan's words.

Mother pulled Jordan to her side, then turned to me, her voice laced with disappointment. "You've only just come home, and already you've disgraced our family. This is Shaw Manor—the chancellor's home. It's not some bandit den where you can run wild.

"You're confined to your rooms for the next two weeks. Every day, you'll copy the household rules until you learn how to behave yourself."

  • Chief Bandit or Chancellor's Son?   Chapter 9

I clamped my hand around Jordan's throat, my eyes as cold as ice. "You must've forgotten that I grew up in a bandit stronghold."Right then, Greg charged out with our men from all directions. In the blink of an eye, they'd slaughtered every last bandit.I kept tightening my grip. Jordan's face turned beet red, his chest burning with growing suffocation as he slapped frantically at my hand. Only when his eyes started to glaze over did I let go.He collapsed to the ground, gasping for air in harsh, ragged breaths. He stared at me in disbelief. "Why did you still come with me if you already figured out my plan?"I glanced into the distance, where Princess Holly was riding up with a squad of soldiers. I smiled and said, "If I didn't play along, how were my friends supposed to earn their military merit? And how was I supposed to make sure you were finished for good?"Princess Holly swung down from her horse. She patted me over and over, then finally exhaled in relief. "Thank goodness y

"I heard that your hometown is far away in Tanovale and that you haven't been back in many years, my lady. That's why I took the liberty of painting your homeland's landscape for you today. If it doesn't quite resemble the real thing, please don't hold it against me."I sounded completely sincere. Lady Susan's hand trembled as she reached out to touch the painting, her voice a little choked. "It's good. It's very good. I've long heard that Lord Shaw was a gifted painter. I didn't expect his son to surpass him. I must reward you handsomely!"…From that day on, I became one of Lady Susan's favorites. She often invited me into the palace. Before long, rumors started swirling in Javilon that Princess Holly might marry me. Some officials, hoping to curry favor, started sending me invitations from time to time. One morning, I would be sipping tea with the vice minister of revenue; that afternoon, I would be at another minister's home, being asked for my opinion on a newly acquired pain

With that, Jordan shoved the servant aside, covered his face, and ran back to his room. From that day on, he became noticeably subdued. He stopped being as arrogant as before.Around the same time, Lady Susan's birthday was approaching. She was one of the king's most favored consorts. She sent invitations to every eligible young nobleman in the capital, asking every guest to bring a painting as a birthday gift. This move was clearly meant to help Princess Holly pick a husband. Once word spread, every prominent family threw itself into the competition, each hoping their son would make the strongest impression at the birthday banquet.Jordan shut himself away as well, painting day and night. As for me, I'd never had much of an eye for color. I eventually managed a still life of red apples and flowers, but I couldn't help sticking out my tongue as I stared at the apples, which had somehow come out nearly purple. My maid immediately rushed to flatter me. "Mr. Julian, they look almost

By the time the punishment was over, Jordan was barely breathing. I leaned in close to him and whispered, "I was fine putting up with those schemes you pulled in the past. The one mistake you made was to use the bandits as a bargaining chip for your stupid games. From here on out, you'd better watch yourself."Jordan's lashes trembled. I knew he'd heard every word. After everything that had happened, Mother and Father were even more disappointed in him. While he was recovering, I seized the chance to strengthen my bond with them.Every morning, I made a point of joining them for breakfast. At noon, I had restorative tonics prepared for them. Before long, I also gave them a glimpse of just how good I was with business.Mother watched me go through an entire ledger in less than half an hour and nodded with obvious satisfaction. "That's more like a son of this family. You have a real head for business—far better than Jordan ever did. From now on, I want you overseeing all our stores.

Unfortunately for Jordan, the scene he expected to see didn't happen. Instead, Robin stopped in front of me, then suddenly dropped to one knee with her hand over her chest."Chief, long time no see," she said.Jordan was dumbfounded. His face twisted in rage, and he hissed through clenched teeth, "I told you to seize him, Robin. Do you not understand simple language? You've always wanted to marry me, haven't you? Kill them all today, and I'll consider it. Otherwise, you'll never be worthy of me—not with your lowly background!"Robin didn't even bat an eye as she listened to his curses. For once, she talked back. "Since you know that I'm beneath you, Mr. Jordan, I'll make sure I stay out of your sight from now on."She turned to me, her eyes full of gratitude. "If it weren't for you, Chief, I wouldn't be who I am today. I could never turn on the person who saved my life."Jordan was about to lose his mind. He couldn't understand why one person after another somehow turned out to be

The princess, who'd been silent this whole time, suddenly spoke up. "Is that so? I actually think Mr. Julian is loyal and righteous. Even the bandits in that mountain stronghold are good people."Everyone fell silent. Even Father, who had been all set to tear into me, just stared at her in a daze. The princess walked up to me, her eyes bright with delight. "Mr. Julian, don't you remember me? I'm Holly."Surprise flashed in my eyes. "It's you!"Three years ago, my fellow bandits and I had gone to a town to rob the rich and help the poor. We happened to run into an assassination attempt on Princess Holly and stepped in to save her life.I had no idea she was a princess.Princess Holly was so excited to see me that she could barely contain herself. "So you're the long-lost son Lord Shaw has been searching for all these years. Here—take this token. If you ever need anything in the future, come to me at the Princess' Manor."A token to the princess's personal residence was something
