Chapter 5

ผู้เขียน: Puppy Blanket
All at once, the living room erupted in gasps and raised voices.

"Why him?"

"I thought Beatrice was head over heels for George. Why would she choose Nathaniel?"

"Exactly! This has to be a mistake!"

Meanwhile, George's face turned red.

"Grandpa, there has to be some kind of mistake!" he said, flustered.

Mr. Chapman Senior rolled his eyes and shot back, "I may be old, but I'm neither deaf nor blind. Do you really think I'd get something this important wrong?"

"Mr. Chapman Senior was very clear. Beatrice chose Nathaniel as her fiancé," Isaac added.

George cut him off. "No, that can't be right. There must have been some mix-up!"

He then turned to me, desperation in his eyes. "Bea, this is a mistake, right? You picked me, but Grandpa must have misheard."

"I chose Nate," I answered with a cold smile.

Nathaniel's head snapped up at the way I addressed him, and his eyes widened in disbelief.

George, however, grabbed my hand in anger. "Everyone in this city knows you're in love

  • Choosing the Right One   Chapter 9

"What does good even mean?" Nathaniel asked in a hoarse voice. "Aren't you worried people will think you married the woman your brother cast aside?"He paused for a moment, then said gently, "What nonsense are you spouting? Marrying you is the best thing that's ever happened to me. It's his loss that he couldn't see your worth."My heart fluttered at those words. Out of nowhere, he chuckled. "I've got a secret to tell you. Truth is, I've had a crush on you for a long time."I stared at him, stunned. Nathaniel continued, "When my parents were still alive, they once took me to your house. At that time, you were only over a year old. You pouted and asked me for candy. I remembered thinking, how could anyone be that adorable?"After my parents died, I barely went out. But every time you visited the Chapman residence, I'd watch you from a distance. I didn't want to bother you, but it hurt, seeing you throw yourself at George like your whole life depended on him."After saying tha

On the day I got married, I was up before sunrise to do my makeup. After that, Nathaniel carried me out the door and into the car. That was when I stole a glance at his profile. He was nothing like George, the reckless heir with that bad-boy vibe. Nathaniel was serious and composed. His nose was sharply defined, and he had thin lips. People liked to say that Nathaniel was aloof cold-hearted. But I had seen him lose his mind for me. Just thinking about it sent a wave of warmth through my chest.I was getting married again. We were taking the same route as I had in my previous life. However, everything felt different now. Back then, I couldn't stop wondering if George would ever regret marrying me. And this time, all I felt was peace. All of a sudden, the car came to a stop. I looked up and saw George standing in the middle of the road. He was dressed in a tuxedo, with a bouquet in his hands. No one had expected him to cause a scene on my wedding day. It was evident that

I hurried to the window. Sure enough, George was standing in my yard. A crowd of neighbors had already gathered, eager to watch the spectacle unfold. Those who knew the story were whispering among themselves, speculating about what would happen between George and me. Before I could say a word, Isabella bolted out the door. "Georgie, are you here for me?"But he pushed her aside. Caught off guard, Isabella fell to the ground."Marry me, Bea," said George. Then, right there in front of everyone, he dropped to one knee and pulled out a ring. I felt sick to my stomach. "You must be confused. You're in love with Isabella, aren't you?"Seeing that I was about to walk away, George jumped up to block my path, only for Isabella to grab his arm. "Bea, please hear me out. This is all a misunderstanding. I love you! No one else matters to me," he declared. I retorted, "That's not what you said before. You told me that I'd have to be understanding if I wanted to marry you. That we'd

George's eyes widened in disbelief. "Bea, I'm in love with you. It's always been you." Out of nowhere, he let out a deranged laugh. "I get it now. You're jealous, aren't you? That's why you're using Nathaniel to get back at me. You couldn't stand that I gave Isabella your birthday gift, could you?""George, don't make things up. Nate and I are already engaged," I replied expressionlessly. His face twisted with rage upon hearing that. In the next instant, he lunged toward me with his arms outstretched. "Bea, you can't get engaged to someone else. You're supposed to love me!" he yelled. Before he could reach me, Nathaniel pulled me behind him, then said, "George, this is our family's Thanksgiving banquet. Everyone's here, so please don't cause a scene. Bea has chosen me.""And who the hell do you think you are? What gives you the right to tell me anything?" George spat. Then, a voice interrupted, "What about me? Do I have the right to speak?"It was Mr. Chapman Senior. He s

Behind George, the other Chapman young men stifled their laughter with their hands over their mouths. "Ms. Layton, this won't do. If you can't even tolerate your sister, what will happen when George starts getting close to other women? Are you going to drop dead from jealousy?" someone mockingly said. Another person burst out laughing and added, "Don't you know Ms. Layton here can take out every woman who gets too cozy with George?"Back then, I had taken up kickboxing because of George. I even ran my mouth, saying I'd beat up anyone who tried to steal him from me.Now, just thinking about it made me cringe. Laughter rippled through the room as George stepped toward me. His voice dripped with disdain as he said, "Grandpa's announcing our engagement today. If you really want to marry me, don't forget what I told you. "We'll live separate lives once we're married, and you'll stay out of my business. That way, I'll forgive you for being wicked and insufferable."I stared at h

Everyone in the room fell silent. All eyes were on me as they waited for my response. Right then, someone wheeled Nathaniel Chapman into the room. He looked genuinely ill, so weak that he couldn't leave his wheelchair. A knowing smile spread across everyone's faces at that sight. I was about to declare that I would marry Nathaniel when Mr. Chapman Senior's words came to mind. "Since you've chosen Nathaniel, I respect your decision," he had said. "But for now, don't say anything. Everyone will know once things settle."After a moment's hesitation, I stopped myself from speaking.Nathaniel didn't say anything either. He calmly glanced at me, but I caught a flicker of disappointment in his eyes. I understood Mr. Chapman Senior's concerns. The Chapman family was enormous, and every one of them had their eyes set on his fortune. So, I chose not to argue with George. Instead, I let them laugh as much as they wanted, then walked away. …Isabella and I were in the same car on

  • Choosing the Right One   Chapter 2

It was the day of my birthday party. George didn't show up until the elders had gradually taken their leave, arriving with Isabella in tow. Her cheeks were flushed, and his neck bore bold red marks. Anyone who saw it could guess what they had just been doing. If this had been the old me, I would've broken down right there—sobbing and demanding answers. How could they do such a thing? One was the man I loved, and the other was my sister, after all. Did my feelings mean nothing to them? But now, I only spared them a glance before turning back to chat with the people around me. George noticed my gaze lingering on the marks for just a moment. Instantly, he stepped in front of Isabella, shielding her. Seconds ticked by, and still, I didn't make a scene. My silence seemed to irritate him. He forced a smile and asked, "Beatrice, you're not pretending to be all gracious just because you're afraid I won't marry you, are you? "Well, that might be for the best. I'm going to be the

  • Choosing the Right One   Chapter 1

I had just stepped out of Mr. Chapman Senior's study when I ran into George Chapman and his cousins. The moment they laid eyes on me, they scattered. But even as they walked away, they couldn't help but take jabs at me. "Beatrice, here for George again? You really don't hold back, do you? Aren't you worried that your war-hero grandpa's rolling in his grave, watching you throw yourself at a man like this?"George, meanwhile, stared at me coldly. "What are you doing here?" he asked sharply. "Are you trying to get Grandpa to put in a good word for you again? You already brought up how your grandfather saved him in the war, didn't you? Haven't you milked that story enough? "You know what, don't bother. You've already embarrassed me enough by turning our relationship into the talk of the town. I haven't made up my mind about the wedding. No matter who you run to, it won't make a difference."His eyes were filled with contempt and disgust. Just like in my previous life, my love had
