Jessica’s POV

I was expecting her sarcastic reply or many a bitchy comeback, but when she turned around to face me, I was so surprised that I involuntarily let my guard down for a second.

“You’re right. I’m reminded of myself…” she uttered with a soft voice, making my eyes narrow.

She took a deep breath, her shoulders easing in as she let her guard completely down in front of me. Letting out a small bitter smile, she continued, “I’m here because I got nowhere else to go, Tessa…”

When my gaze turned sharp upon hearing her call me Tessa, she immediately realized her mistake and corrected herself in haste. “Jessa… I mean, Jessica.”

Narrowing my eyes, I asked, “What do you mean?”

She bit her lower lip in hesitation before anxiously looking around. Slowly bending down, she picked up fallen roses and admired their thorns. Staring at it, she let out a heavy sigh and shrugged defeatedly.
