Chapter 3

Author: Bubbles
"You're dead, Grace!"

Darian shoved me to the ground in a rage.

The back of my head slammed against the stairs. Pain exploded behind my eyes.

Through the haze, I heard him screaming at me.

"You've gone too far, Grace!"

"You're not worth Lilith's little finger. She's a thousand times kinder than you!"

"Being in the same house as someone like you makes the air smell rotten. You make me sick!"

I swallowed the pain and cut him off.

"I'll move out. Relax."

That shut him up. He stood there for a long moment before letting out a cold scoff.

"You'd better keep your word."

He glared at me, then scooped Lilith into his arms and left without looking back.

I touched the back of my head. My fingers came away sticky with blood.

I thought of how, after he first learned we were fated mates, he used to say my scent was intoxicating. The mate bond did that.

Later, he said he wanted to smell it all the time, and asked me to move in.

I said yes.

The man who once held me and whispered sweet things now spat venom at me for another woman.

I was bleeding on the floor, and he walked away carrying Lilith without a backward glance.

It didn't matter anymore.

Once Darian's parents returned to Stone Creek Pack, I could have both families witness the dissolution of the marking ceremony.

I dragged myself up and called an ambulance.

At the hospital, the doctor said I had a mild concussion and a hairline fracture in my forearm from bracing my fall.

I sighed. In the past, injuries like this would have healed on their own in no time.

But now — maybe because my soul hadn't fully settled back into this body — my wolf energy was unstable, flickering on and off like a faulty light.

No telling how long it would take to recover.

With nowhere to go and not wanting to worry my parents, I stayed at the hospital alone.

Stepping out of the exam room, a wave of dizziness nearly knocked me off my feet.

A pair of strong arms caught me.

"Careful."

A low, magnetic voice. I looked up.

Alex.

"Thank you, Alex."

I gently stepped out of his hold.

He hesitated, then awkwardly pulled his hands back.

A flash of disappointment crossed his eyes.

I couldn't meet his gaze. I walked away quickly.

He had saved me once before in my past life. In this one, I would never let him die in that plane crash.

But his feelings — I didn't know how to answer them. Not yet.

I spent three days in the hospital.

After discharge, I went back for my things and moved into a new place that afternoon.

Surprisingly, the apartment I'd found in a rush was affordable, well-located, and actually quite nice.

I was enjoying a rare moment of peace when, on the fourth day after leaving Darian, he called.

He sounded drunk.

"Where are you?"

"CONNAUGHT, west wing. Get over here."

I was in the middle of a game — a crucial round interrupted. I was annoyed.

"What do you want?"

Silence on the other end. The background noise faded.

I frowned and was about to hang up when Darian spoke.

"Grace, where did you go?"

I started a new round, eyes on the screen. "You said living under the same roof as me made the air unbearable. So I moved out."

"Don't worry. I won't be coming back."

His breathing grew heavier. Then a cold laugh.

"Since when are you so obedient, Grace?"

"Weren't you the one who used to cling to me like your life depended on it?"

"Since you're being so compliant — how about you leave the city? Get out of my life. Stop coming between me and Lilith. Can you manage that?"

I was locked into the game, eyes glued to the screen.

It took a moment for his words to register.

His mocking voice cut through.

"What, nothing to say?"

"You think I don't know your little tricks by now?"

"You think I can't tell you're still not over me?"

"Kneel and apologize to Lilith, and I'll let you crawl back."

"Fine," I said calmly. "I'll leave, Darian."

I hung up before he could respond.

Darian's face contorted. "What are you laughing about now?"I pointed at the security camera above his head and said slowly, "Intentional destruction of key evidence. Caught on video. I think that's more than enough to convict you."The color drained from Darian's face. His legs gave out and he collapsed onto the sofa.I stood, patted his shoulder, a smile in my voice."Oh, and the ledger you just shredded? That was a decoy. Illegally obtained evidence is inadmissible anyway. The real records are still in your office — and they'll be the most powerful evidence at the Werewolf Council Court.""Darian, I gave you chances. So many chances.""But you just couldn't help yourself.""So now — we play by my rules."I walked out without looking back.Alex hurried toward me the moment I appeared, quickly checking me over to make sure I wasn't hurt before breaking into a grin. "How'd it go?"I flipped my hair and smirked. "Outsmarting that fool isn't exactly a challenge."We strolled arm in arm,

Grace, even if you're trying to get away from Darian, this is not the way! You're jumping from one fire into another!"I met his gaze steadily. "I'm not with Alex to escape Darian, Dad. I'm with him because I love him."Dad still looked disapproving."Fine. But Grace, your taste in men is terrible. Don't say I didn't warn you."Alex stepped forward, his voice low and firm. "Then let time prove me right. I won't let Grace down."Dad scoffed and walked away. For a few days, things were quiet.Until a headline exploded across every feed: "Alpha's Daughter Grace Brutally Attacks Pregnant Woman, Causing Miscarriage."In the video, Lilith sobbed through her accusations — that I had pushed her down the stairs.Playing the victim was her specialty. I flexed my hand and said nothing."I haven't even settled the score for my dead child, and you dare hit me?"Something twisted in my chest.I remembered my past life — kneeling in the snow for an entire day and night, begging Darian to spare my parents. He kicked me in the stomach. He knew I was carrying his child. The phone interrupted me.Darian.I swallowed my disgust and answered. His voice was ragged and exhausted."Grace, Lilith lost the baby. My child is gone!""It was my first child. How could you be so heartless?"While Darian drowned in grief on the other end, my expression didn't change."Darian, the marking ceremony has been dissolved. From now on, your problems are none of my business.""And I already have a boy—"I glanced at Alex and swallowed the rest of the sentence."The point is, stop calling me."I hung up before he could respond."He's still bothering you?"Alex's eyes narrowed, something dangerous flickering in them."I could make him disappear. Permanently. I mean it."I laughed and shook my head. "Alex, you're the Alpha of the Blaze Pack. Darian belongs to Stone Creek Pack. If you go after him, it'll damage the trust between our packs.""This is something only I can do — and it needs to be done by the book."I paused, then said abruptly, "Alex, you have feelings for me, do

Dad saw me holding him back and assumed I was still protecting Darian. He coughed in frustration."Grace, you're the one who wanted to dissolve the ceremony, and now you're shielding him?""Do you still have feelings for him?"Darian heard that and smirked. "Grace, quit the games. If you still want me, why bother playing hard to get? You know that doesn't work on me."Lilith's eyes darted around before she leaned against Darian, looking fragile and tearful. "Darian, if Grace still has feelings for you, maybe I should step aside..."Darian immediately wrapped his arms around Lilith and murmured comforts.I took a deep breath, pulled out my phone, and dialed Alex — thank God he still had the same number. His voice on the other end was polite and distant. "Hello, who's calling?"I made my voice honey-sweet. "Baby, I'm on Maple Street. Weren't we going to celebrate the dissolution? Come pick me up."Alex didn't hesitate. "I'll be right there."I hung up and said coldly, "You heard that. I
