Chapter 3

Author: Crystal K
After dragging me back from the airport, Nico never brought up Elena again.

That woman who worked the bar at his club seemed to have completely vanished from our world.

We entered a twisted, almost sick honeymoon phase.

Every night, he pinned me to the bed.

He kissed me deep, hot sweat dripping from his chiseled muscles onto my collarbone.

Between heavy breaths, he claimed me over and over, whispering in my ear, "cara, I only have you. Don't leave me."

It made me think, just for a second, that he was really back.

But soon enough, the bubble burst.

Nico started using the race for Underboss as an excuse. He got incredibly busy.

Our schedules perfectly missed each other.

Every morning I woke up, his side of the bed was empty. Just growing stacks of cash on the nightstand and a few half-assed notes.

He was buying my silence with money, forcing me to behave with distance.

Our relationship felt like rusty gears.

Even though this apartment had his traces everywhere, he felt further and further away.

I looked at that cash. I was planning to take it and leave.

Until one morning, after puking my guts out, I stared at the two pink lines on the pregnancy test in the bathroom. The blood drained from my face.

I was pregnant.

And just last week, because of a massive migraine from morning sickness, I blindly took a handful of painkillers Nico had tossed on the coffee table.

The smell of bleach in the hospital made my stomach churn.

The gray-haired doctor pushed his glasses up, frowning heavily. "These are illegal street drugs. You took a massive dose. The risk of neural tube defects is extremely high. You're too early along right now. Come back next month for a detailed screening."

During the six hours I waited for the blood work, I sat on the bench in the hallway.

I dug my nails into the back of my hand, leaving purple bruises.

The sheer terror and guilt almost drowned me.

Why didn't I notice sooner? Why did I take the pills he bought?

When I finally got the "safe for now" results, I leaned against the sterile white wall, gasping for air like I'd just survived a disaster.

For this fragile little life, I actually reconsidered leaving. I wanted to try one more time.

Late at night, the lock clicked.

Nico pushed the door open, reeking of alcohol and blood.

His cheekbone was bruised, his eyebrow split and dripping blood.

"Ran into some rival scum. Got into a fight." He brushed off my questions, stripped off his bloody shirt, and walked into the bathroom.

The shower started running.

Tossed in the corner of the mattress, that black encrypted phone he rarely used lit up.

A text tone.

Like I was possessed, I picked it up.

Sender: Elena.

[Nico, thank you for sticking up for me again today. Without your protection, Misha and I couldn't survive.]

[Misha keeps asking when his Uncle Nico is coming over. Nico, give us a home.]

My heart stopped. It hurt so much that even breathing tasted like blood.

I unlocked that encrypted channel full of street thugs and mobsters and scrolled.

They never cut contact.

They just moved from the sunlight where I could see them into the rotting gutter.

Picture after picture. Him with his arm around Elena's shoulder, comments full of blessings.

Until I hit Christmas Eve.

[Elena: Misha found a ring in the cake you gave us. Is your girlfriend proposing? Let me give it back.]

[Nico: Keep it. Pretend you didn't see it. I don't want to be tied down right now.]

Didn't want to be tied down.

I touched my flat stomach and let out a mocking laugh.

Tears smashed onto the screen, blurring the words.

My last shred of dignity shattered right then and there.

With shaking fingers, I typed a reply from his number:

[You want him so bad? Keep him. He's your problem now.]

The second the text sent, the shower stopped.

A damp shadow loomed over me.

Nico stood there with a towel around his waist, hair dripping.

His eyes locked onto the screen in my hand, the illusion of warmth instantly vanishing.

"Seraphina, what the fuck are you doing with my phone!"

"Seraphina, did you see the missing person flyer on the bench?"Mia rushed in holding her phone, her voice shaking.I was checking the last batch of receipts. My pen stopped in mid-air."What missing person flyer?""It's not a flyer." She looked down, her voice dropping. "It's an obituary. Found it in the local paper. Three days ago, a man named Nico Ricci passed away at the city hospital. No one... was by his side."My pen bled a drop of ink onto the paper, then casually moved on."Got it," I said. "Keep moving the chairs."Mia glanced at me, didn't say anything else, and walked to the door hugging a stack of tablecloths. That bench outside had been empty for a long time. The rainy season passed. The sun bleached the wood. No one sat there anymore, clutching their chest, shoulders shaking from coughing.I stood up, walked to the window, and glanced at that empty seat. The wind blew a dead leaf across it. Then blew it away.No tears. No suffocation. Just a strange, almost exhausting ca

The bleach smell in the hospital hallway couldn't cover the stench of death."Late-stage stomach cancer. Two months max." The doctor closed the chart, his tone robotic. "Long-term heavy drinking, terrible lifestyle. His organs are completely failing.""How long?"I heard my own voice."Two months max."I leaned against the wall and nodded, expressionless. One of his former Soldatos standing nearby kicked a trash can, violently dragging his hands through his hair."He's been out of his damn mind! Gave up all his Outfit turf a year ago!" The enforcer yelled at me, full of confusion and resentment. "A few days ago, that woman, Elena, somehow got the news. Came to his room crying like she was at a funeral. And guess what?"He sneered, making a gun gesture with his hand."He pulled a piece right out from under his pillow and aimed it dead at her forehead. Eyes completely red, screaming at her to get the fuck out of his sight. He doesn't even care about his own life anymore, why would he car

The rainy season came hard and fast. Poured for half a month straight. The restaurant sign out front was washed shiny, but not a single customer was in sight.I gave the staff the day off, watched the empty front alone, and dozed off on the register counter. The rain slammed against the glass. Dense, like someone counting coins outside.A blast of cold wind hit me, pulling me out of my half-sleep.I looked up.Someone was standing in the doorway. Half his body was completely soaked. Water dripped down his pant legs, forming a small puddle on the floor.Nico.He couldn't fill out that white shirt anymore. The fabric hung off his bones. His exposed wrists were skinny and yellowed. Like dry twigs. He smelled like damp rot. Like rotting apples.I stood up. My voice flat, like greeting a total stranger."What do you need?"He didn't speak. Walked over, sat on a barstool, and held the hot cocoa I casually slid him. Steam blurred his eyes."The family kicked me out. I handed over all my route

"Seraphina, that guy is back."Mia, my employee, lowered her voice and shot me a look.I followed her gaze out the window. That hunched figure on the bench. I already recognized him.Eighth time.Nico was wearing a washed-out, faded jacket, huddled on the bench like a piece of dried-up wood.I didn't stop wiping my coffee cup, and my eyes didn't linger for an extra second."Ignore him," I said. "Get back to work."Mia bit her lip, muttering, "He looks really sick. When I swept outside yesterday, I saw a bunch of bloody tissues under the bench."My chest randomly tightened, but I didn't show it."His pill bottle rattles every time he takes a step," Mia kept going. "He never comes in. Just sits there. For the whole afternoon."I picked up the cup and walked into the back kitchen, shutting those words out.Years ago, the night he won his first underground fight for the mob, he was covered in blood but smiling like a kid.Running shipments at the docks in sub-zero weather, he carried crate

The Chicago night was colder than I remembered.I had just signed the final property transfer papers. The lawyer's office went dark. I drove alone to the old apartment.Just to hand over the keys and grab my last few things.Half the motion-sensor lights in the underground garage were busted. A dim yellow light flickered twice, then died.I dragged my suitcase toward the elevator. My footsteps echoed in the empty garage.Clatter.The sound of something knocking over up ahead. My chest tightened. I squinted into the dim light.A skinny shadow was crouched behind a car, frantically picking up scattered soda cans.Unshaven. Clothes hanging off him like a skeleton. He looked up, saw me, and completely froze."Seraphina..."His voice was horrifyingly raspy. It was Nico.I instinctively took a step back and turned to leave."Wait!"He rushed up from behind and grabbed me, pinning me against the cold concrete wall.My forehead scraped the wall. A sharp sting."Does it hurt? I'm sorry, I didn'

By the time the plane landed, it was pitch black outside.Out the window, Miami's lights looked like scattered gold dust. Completely different from Chicago's dead, grayish-white vibe. The cabin doors opened. A warm, humid breeze rolled in, smelling like the ocean.Julian was standing on the tarmac. A custom black Armani suit, not a single button undone. Behind him were two rows of fully armed mafia bodyguards. The night wind whipped at his coat, but he stood dead straight, like a steel beam driven into the ground. The way he looked at me—not a hint of mockery.Just a bottomless calm, like he'd been waiting for this exact moment.I walked down the stairs and my legs gave out on the second step. Before I could hit the ground, an arm hooked firmly around my waist. He pressed me into his chest, his large hand cradling the back of my head. His chest was warm, solid.
