Chapter 4

Author: Crystal K
Nico lunged forward and grabbed my wrist.

I stumbled and fell against the edge of the bed. A sharp pain shot through my lower abdomen.

I ignored the pain, gritted my teeth, and stood up.

Looking straight into his furious face, I raised my hand without hesitation.

Smack!

A sharp, ringing slap across his face.

Nico didn't even flinch.

His eyes were glued to the lit screen.

He gripped my wrist and pried my fingers open one by one.

I gasped in pain and my grip loosened.

The phone dropped into his palm.

Watching him frantically scroll through the screen, I clutched my stomach and burst out laughing.

"Can't unsend it, Nico. What, feeling sorry for your whore?"

Before I even finished, a gust of pure rage hit me.

He slapped me across the right side of my face.

I crashed into the mattress.

I saw stars. My ears were ringing.

"Seraphina, how vicious can you be?!" Nico's veins popped on his forehead, his eyes bloodshot. "She's unstable! You trying to push her over the edge?!"

I turned my head and spit out blood.

"Then let her die," I rasped.

Nico completely lost it.

He yanked open the nightstand drawer and pulled out his gun.

Click. A bullet in the chamber.

He roughly grabbed my hand and shoved the barrel into my palm.

Then, he gripped my wrist and pressed the muzzle against his own forehead.

"Shoot me!" His eyes looked like they were going to pop out. "Her drunk ex is still hunting her down, I don't have the fucking energy for this! Are you done throwing a tantrum?!"

The metal barrel dug into his skin, leaving a red mark.

"You waited six years in Chicago for me, and now you can't give me this little bit of time?! You can't even give me that much grace?!"

Six years. Time. Grace.

Looking at this hysterical man, I just found it absurd.

Just a few hours ago, because of this fragile life inside me, I was delusional enough to think I could piece together a real family in this blood-soaked world. Be loving parents.

But he ripped my wounds wide open and trampled my dignity.

All for another woman. Using a gun to force me to cave.

Right then, the burner phone rang.

Nico snatched it and hit speaker.

Misha's wailing echoed in the room.

"Uncle Nico! Mom looked at the phone and ran out into the pouring rain! I can't find her!"

Nico's face dropped.

He grabbed me by the collar and dragged me off the bed.

Dragged me all the way to the garage.

It was pouring.

The wipers were going crazy but couldn't clear the water off the windshield.

Nico drove like a maniac. Finally, a few blocks away, under the awning of a convenience store, he found Elena, soaked to the bone, hugging her knees and shivering.

The car door flew open.

Nico rushed into the rain, took off his coat, and wrapped it around her.

Elena threw herself into his arms, crying so hard she almost passed out.

I sat in the passenger seat, coldly watching this touching melodrama.

Next second, my door was ripped open.

Nico grabbed my arm and dragged me into the rain.

The early spring rain was bone-chilling. It instantly soaked my thin nightgown.

"Apologize." His voice was colder than the rain.

I stood straight, staring dead at him. "For what?"

He shoved me hard. I lost my balance and fell into the freezing puddle.

People taking shelter on the street stared, shocked and pointing fingers.

My kneecaps felt like they split open. Cold rain poured over my head.

My whole body shook. My teeth wouldn't stop chattering.

Elena shrank into Nico's arms in terror, covering her mouth and sobbing. "Nico, don't do this. It's not her fault, it's mine..."

"She needs to apologize." Nico's voice was purely cruel. "Seraphina, I can put up with your temper. But Elena has depression. She can't take this kind of stress."

Can't take this kind of stress.

The pulling pain in my lower stomach violently spiked. It felt like a sharp blade was twisting wildly inside me.

A warm liquid snaked down my inner thigh.

Soon, a shocking pool of dark red spread in the muddy water beneath me.

The rain brutally washed over my face.

I looked up, pulling my lips into a desperate smile.

"Is that right..."

I looked down at the spreading blood, my voice shrill.

"Nico, I'm pregnant. I can't take this kind of stress either..."

"Seraphina, did you see the missing person flyer on the bench?"Mia rushed in holding her phone, her voice shaking.I was checking the last batch of receipts. My pen stopped in mid-air."What missing person flyer?""It's not a flyer." She looked down, her voice dropping. "It's an obituary. Found it in the local paper. Three days ago, a man named Nico Ricci passed away at the city hospital. No one... was by his side."My pen bled a drop of ink onto the paper, then casually moved on."Got it," I said. "Keep moving the chairs."Mia glanced at me, didn't say anything else, and walked to the door hugging a stack of tablecloths. That bench outside had been empty for a long time. The rainy season passed. The sun bleached the wood. No one sat there anymore, clutching their chest, shoulders shaking from coughing.I stood up, walked to the window, and glanced at that empty seat. The wind blew a dead leaf across it. Then blew it away.No tears. No suffocation. Just a strange, almost exhausting ca

The bleach smell in the hospital hallway couldn't cover the stench of death."Late-stage stomach cancer. Two months max." The doctor closed the chart, his tone robotic. "Long-term heavy drinking, terrible lifestyle. His organs are completely failing.""How long?"I heard my own voice."Two months max."I leaned against the wall and nodded, expressionless. One of his former Soldatos standing nearby kicked a trash can, violently dragging his hands through his hair."He's been out of his damn mind! Gave up all his Outfit turf a year ago!" The enforcer yelled at me, full of confusion and resentment. "A few days ago, that woman, Elena, somehow got the news. Came to his room crying like she was at a funeral. And guess what?"He sneered, making a gun gesture with his hand."He pulled a piece right out from under his pillow and aimed it dead at her forehead. Eyes completely red, screaming at her to get the fuck out of his sight. He doesn't even care about his own life anymore, why would he car

The rainy season came hard and fast. Poured for half a month straight. The restaurant sign out front was washed shiny, but not a single customer was in sight.I gave the staff the day off, watched the empty front alone, and dozed off on the register counter. The rain slammed against the glass. Dense, like someone counting coins outside.A blast of cold wind hit me, pulling me out of my half-sleep.I looked up.Someone was standing in the doorway. Half his body was completely soaked. Like dry twigs. He smelled like damp rot. Like rotting apples.I stood up. My voice flat, like greeting a total stranger."What do you need?"He didn't speak. Walked over, sat on a barstool, and held the hot cocoa I casually slid him. Steam blurred his eyes."The family kicked me out. I handed over all my route

"Seraphina, that guy is back."Mia, my employee, lowered her voice and shot me a look.I followed her gaze out the window. That hunched figure on the bench. I already recognized him.Eighth time.Nico was wearing a washed-out, faded jacket, huddled on the bench like a piece of dried-up wood.I didn't stop wiping my coffee cup, and my eyes didn't linger for an extra second."Ignore him," I said. "Get back to work."Mia bit her lip, muttering, "He looks really sick. When I swept outside yesterday, I saw a bunch of bloody tissues under the bench."My chest randomly tightened, but I didn't show it."His pill bottle rattles every time he takes a step," Mia kept going. "He never comes in. Just sits there. For the whole afternoon."I picked up the cup and walked into the back kitchen, shutting those words out.Years ago, the night he won his first underground fight for the mob, he was covered in blood but smiling like a kid.Running shipments at the docks in sub-zero weather, he carried crate

The Chicago night was colder than I remembered.I had just signed the final property transfer papers. The lawyer's office went dark. I drove alone to the old apartment.Just to hand over the keys and grab my last few things.Half the motion-sensor lights in the underground garage were busted. A dim yellow light flickered twice, then died.I dragged my suitcase toward the elevator.
