My wolf remained restless inside me.

Asma was totally oblivious to the storm she had just caused.

She looked at me with happy, hopeful eyes.

"Don't you think I have a chance?" she asked softly.

The question struck me so much that I wasn't expecting it to hit her quite as hard.

A chance?

With my mate?

With the father of my child?

I lowered my gaze to the vegetables, buying myself a few seconds.

What was I supposed to say?

I couldn't tell her the truth.

Not now.

Maybe not ever.

I tried to pull a smile from my face.

"You're beautiful, smart, and stubborn," I said quietly. "Any man would be lucky to have you."

A grin immediately spread across her face.

"I knew you'd say something like that."

I laughed weakly.

But the laughter didn't reach my eyes.

Asma placed her hands on the counter and folded her arms.

"I'm serious, Bella. I have to make him notice me."

My chest tightened.

"Asma—"

"No, listen." She pointed at me dramatically with the spoon. "Well, I already have plans.

I blinked.

"Plans?"

"Of course." Her eyes sparkled mischievously. "You don't think I'm going to sit around and do nothing, do you?"

I couldn't help shaking my head.

Only Asma would treat falling for one of the most powerful Alphas alive like a challenge.

"I think about him all the time," she admitted with a dreamy sigh.

I felt my stomach turn in pain.

"All the time?"

She nodded.

"Every day."

The joyful expression on her face faded.

"Sometimes I even dream about us together. Having dinner. Traveling. Talking."

I swallowed hard.

Every word was like another weight on my chest.

Because while Asma dreamed about a future with Alpha Xander...

I was already carrying a piece of him inside me.

It was almost funny that the irony of it all.

“It sounds crazy, doesn't it?” she laughed.

"No," I murmured. "It doesn't."

My voice came out much quieter than I intended.

Thankfully, she didn't seem to notice.

After a while, the food was ready.

After that, the talk fell off on its own.

We didn't talk much when setting the table.

Truthfully, I was thankful.

I needed silence.

Required space to breathe.

Needed a moment away from the guilt slowly building inside me.

We ate quietly.

The only sounds in the apartment were the clinking of cutlery and the distant noise of traffic outside.

Asma broke off from her meal and glanced up.

"Bella."

I glanced at her.

"Hm?"

"What about Alpha Lucian?"

My hand paused.

The name seemed strange at this moment.

Distant.

As if from a different life.

"Did you hear from him again?" she asked.

All I could do was focus on the food on my plate for a second.

Then I had a realization that made me stop and think, even on my own.

I hadn't thought about Lucian all day.

Not once.

In fact, I could barely remember the last time I thought about him at all.

A bitter laugh escaped me.

"Honestly?"

Asma nodded.

"I almost forgot he existed."

Her brow lifted up.

"Seriously?"

I scoffed.

"That bastard?" I muttered. "No. I haven't heard from him."

For a moment the anger that had been buried in me came back.

"He hasn't called."

"He hasn't looked for me."

"He hasn't done anything."

Asma's face darkened.

"He doesn't deserve you."

I looked away.

"Maybe not."

After that I straightened my shoulders.

"But one thing is certain."

"What?"

A cold smile touched my lips.

"He'll regret it."

Asma immediately grinned.

"That's the spirit."

After that, the discussion turned to something else, no one said anything else again.

A few minutes later, I found myself resting a hand over my stomach again.

The movement was now instinctive.

Natural.

Protective.

Asma noticed.

Her expression softened.

"No matter what happens," she said gently, "don't ever think about getting rid of the baby."

My throat tightened.

The memory of those dark days flashed through my mind.

The fear.

The uncertainty.

The loneliness.

Asma continued softly, "Whatever problems exist between you and the father... none of that is the baby's fault."

I swallowed.

"You're right."

She smiled.

"Promise me."

I nodded.

"I promise."

Asma seemed satisfied.

Completely unaware that the man she admired so much was the very father she was talking about.

There was a secret in my chest that I could not let go.

After dinner, we cleaned the kitchen together.

Then we tackled the rest of the apartment.

Dishes.

Laundry.

Tidying the living room.

I was so drained by the end of it all.

My feet ached.

My back hurt.

And my eyes struggled to stay open.

"I'm going to bed," I told Asma.

She waved from the couch.

"Good luck tomorrow."

Tomorrow.

My stomach jumped into my throat as soon as I heard the word.

I managed to have a faint smile before I went to my room.

When I closed the door behind me, silence enveloped me.

Slowly, I changed into comfortable clothes and climbed onto the bed.

The bed mattress immediately embraced me.

With a sigh, I rolled onto my back and rested both hands over my small bump.

Two months.

A little life within me.

A little secret, that might turn everything upside down.

My eyes slowly drifted shut.

And as sleep pulled me under, the last face that appeared in my mind wasn't Lucian's.

It was Alpha Xander Marco's.

As usual every night.

Lucian's POVI never expected to see Bella again. Not after all these years. Not after all I had done.I had been to the business conference the previous morning with little enthusiasm. My company had been in a bind for a while and my investors had started withdrawing and my life was different from what it used to be. The top dollar suits were gone and I was wearing clothes and decor that looked like they would cover up how far I had fallen. I hadn't gotten any sleep the night before, and morning breakfast looked like I'd been hit with curses—every day the dark circles under my eyes reminded me of that.I was very hopeful I would land on one deal that would save my business.Instead...Fate placed Bella directly in front of me.The moment she stepped out of the ladies' room, I almost stopped breathing. She looked...Different.Not that she had grown into a different person, but that at last, she looked like the woman she was always supposed to be.She wasn't afraid. She wasn't timid.Sh

Xander's POVThe moment my eyes settled on the man standing in front of Bella, I immediately noticed the way her shoulders had tensed. She wasn't smiling. She wasn't comfortable. Rather, she maintained a respectful distance, her purse clutched tightly in her fist, her hand at her side.I approached them with careful steps, never taking my eyes off the stranger. When I finally stopped beside Bella, I naturally slipped an arm around her waist, pulling her gently against my side. She leaned toward me too willingly and that was all I needed to know."This is my husband," Bella said quietly, looking at the man in front of us.A shade drained from the stranger's countenance. His eyes widened in disbelief as they moved from Bella to me."You..." he whispered. "You're Xander Marco?"I am," I replied calmly. He just let it hang there for a few bloody seconds. Then a moment dawned on him."So... you're the one she married."I am," I said again, my voice firm.He put his head down for a split se

Bella's POVFor weeks, a peaceful period prevailed in Atlanta, with life eventually settling back into a seemingly normal routine for the first time in a long, long time. Xander remained in the human city, managing most of his responsibilities remotely while Gamma Ethan oversaw the day-to-day affairs of Nightmare Pack. Detailed reports would come in every night and emergency would still crop up occasionally, but not so urgent as to require Xander's return right then.I could feel quiet happiness in my heart looking upon him a little while in relax.Despite this, he still worked longer hours than most people would, all too often disappearing from the office after breakfast with piles of paper on his desk. He spent most of his mornings in meetings, business deals, security reports, and updates from the pack, but even when he was very busy, he would still always find time for me and the twins.I cherished these little moments as my greatest treasures.Watch him running around the garden

Xander's POVWhen dinner was near, the eyes of the twins were hardly able to keep them open.Ayra laid her head on Bella's shoulder, sleep blinking her slow blinks, as Aman steadfastly put his fingerlump hand on my arm, that same book of dinosaurs still in his tiny grip held out to the table.Bella laughed softly.I believe someone's losing the battle against sleep. This elicited an immediate response of shaking of her head from Ayra."I'm not sleepy."That was followed by a large yawn.I chuckled.Speak, Princess, says that I don't,She pressed her lips into her face and looked him frown."It wasn't a yawn."Lifting his gaze to mine, Aman said…"I think it was."Ayra gasped dramatically."You betrayed me!"There was a lot of laughter in the room.Laura offered her ready smiles."I will make up the beds for them.Aman ran quickly to my hand, saying "I want Dada. And I want Mama," Ayra says.Bella smiled at me.Perhaps it's a matter of two of us working together, I suppose.Together we

Bella's POVEagerly the morning sun illuminated the large windows of the Atlanta mansion, through which the warm rays of gold light filtered into the breakfast room. I laughed when Ayra was squabbling with Aman over which one was bigger, the pancake or the dog's. Visiting each would find bits of syrup adorning their little faces, and they were all making the other laugh every few seconds.Laura was standing beside me and was smiling. They're definitely keeping breakfast interesting!Norman I laughed so much i couldn't help it.“They are exactly like their father, and they somehow get everything onto a 'competitive playing field'.Laura laughed as she gave Aman a napkin.I don't think that he ever will say his sister's pancake is bigger.Aman's head immediately shook."No! Mine is biggest."Sternly, Ayra clenched her arms."No, mine!"I laughed, and kissed the head of both, topped."You're both winners."It appeared that they were content for this, then—at least for now.Almost the tim

Xander's POVAround me in the morning, there was some light on the floor of my study, but it made little difference to ease the weight in my chest.I did not have a lot of sleep and that was it.All the reports that I had read in my prior life played a tune in my mind that would not let me sleep. The baffling disease was not killing as many as it used to, but it revealed itself nonetheless. I couldn't help wanting to ask more questions than answer any anymore in the attack on the western border than I could in the place I suppose I still had some nochuckleheads willing to work for the Alpha for their own gains. There was a definite knock at my door."Come in."Another pile of papers was in Gamma Ethan's hands. As evidenced by his face, today was not going to be as easy a day to read as the one before."Good morning, Alpha."I was tired and nodded at him."Tell me."I was put on several reports. The patrol captains finished up their investigation while it was still dark out."And?"The
