~CHAPTER 4~~

“May I have your attention, please!”

A woman with a dazzling smile and an equally dazzling, bejeweled neck took to a small stage near the head table. The chatter immediately softened, all eyes turning toward the host.

“We are so honored to have all of you, the pillars of our community, join us tonight,” she continued. “And before the main festivities begin, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the Alphas whose leadership make all of our peace possible!”

The applause started instantly.

I used the distraction, melting behind a towering floral centerpiece.

The host began listing names, each one greeted with fresh bursts of cheering.

“Alpha Thorne of the Shadow Crest Pack!”

“Alpha Kael of the Moonstone Pack!”

As the host neared the head table, Alpha Damien visibly straightened, a practiced, impassive mask sliding over his features.

He didn’t even glance in my direction again. My shame and fear were nothing compared to his public image.

“And of course,” the host proclaimed, her voice rising more than it did earlier on. “we must acknowledge the unwavering strength and unparalleled growth of the Crescent Pack under the leadership of the Alpha Damien!”

The applause for my father was the loudest yet. I was not surprised. He’s known for his pack’s riches and warriors.

Everyone also knows âbout how he abandoned me but they barely speak âbout it. When they do, I’m the one who gets blamed.

He offered a small, curt nod

“But the future of a pack rests on its heirs!” the host declared brightly. “So please join me in also acknowledging Alpha Damien’s magnificent sons, the pride of the Crescent Pack, the Ashwood Triplets!”

My breath hitched again, this time for an entirely different reason. These were the children he had with his first mate, before my mother.

I barely know them. The short time I spent in the crescent pack, I only heard about them but never saw them.

Three young men, positioned just behind Alpha Damien, stepped forward slightly. They were dressed in tailored suits; one in charcoal, one in midnight blue, and one in a dark, forest green.

They were tall, well-built, and as striking as their father.

They weren't identical, not quite.

The first, in blue, was a mirror image of my father, all silver-haired severity and cold, assessing eyes.

The second, in charcoal…. I trailed, my heart caught in  my throat ând a sweat broke out my forehead. Dark hair that fell in heavy waves just across his neck, golden eyes that hit with too much recognition. His once bare chest is now covered in nicely tailored suits.

“My Saviour?” I whispered after a thorough assessment.

He looked away from me again, the unimpressed expression still lingering.

I swallowed hard then found the third of the triplets.

Dressed in a forest green suit. His hair was a shade of dark brown that refused to lie flat on his head.

His eyes searched through, in search of something… perhaps someone, until they landed on me.

He met my gaze, his green eyes locking into mine for a split second ând that’s when I felt it.

A blinding, painful jolt shot through me, stealing the breath from my lungs.

Every nerve ending screamed, and my tiny wolf gave a sudden, desperate howl of recognition.

Mate.

I felt the pull. It was him

Utter shock settled over me. It can’t be. I refuse to find my mate in my step brother.. Alpha Damien’s son.

I was locked in his gaze, staring at the son of the man who despised me.

Did he feel it too? The pull? Does he realize who I am? The abandoned daughter of the Alpha?

“Please, let the celebrating continue! We honor our Alphas, and we look to the future with hope!” The host concluded

The tension was broken as Alpha Damien turned to his sons, exchanging a few low words.

“Something is wrong” I mumbled, gripping the cleaning rag even tighter.

This was supposed to be my chance to escape torture.

I stumbled back, my legs suddenly weak.

I took another step backward, trying to break into a run.

My heel caught on something ând the worst happened. My balance failed, causing me to stumble into a small, elegant serving table positioned near the wall.

It held a silver tray, filled champagne glasses.

.

The world seemed to move in slow motion as the tray tipped.

Shatter.

Champagne splashed everywhere, onto the floor, and most humiliatingly, onto the expensive shoes of several nearby guests.

I landed hard on my knees in a puddle of sticky, cold spilled wine.

My chest constricted, and the cleaning rag slipped from my fingers, landing beside a shard of broken glass.

Silence followed ând a thousand pats of eyes bore into me.

My face felt hot enough to melt, and I squeezed my eyes shut. I wished for the ground ro just swallow me whole.

Indistinct chatters filled the hall… ones that got louder by the minute.

"Is that... Freya?"

"The Alpha's abandoned daughter, isn't she?"

"Look at her, clumsy as ever."

"She's serving tonight? Why? I thought Alpha Damien had finally washed his hands off her."

"Disgraceful. And on a night like this."

My eyes blurred with a sting. I’d been trying to avoid such embarassment.

Before I had the chance to make it up to my feet ând sprint into the night, Clara’s voice cried out

"Freya! What in the Goddess's name have you done?!". She didn't bother to lower her voice or check the audience.

"Get up this instant! You are a useless, clumsy child! Look at this mess! You think this is how we welcome the esteemed guests of the Shadow Moon Pack? On your knees in a puddle, ruining perfectly good champagne! Alpha Damien's son is right here, and you have to cause a scene!"

She grabbed my arm and yanked me up with a threatening scowl on her face.

I scrambled to my feet, trembling, my eyes locked on the floor.

As I was hauled upright, I couldn't help a sidelong glance.

The three triplets were standing just a few feet away. The silver-haired one wore a look of thorough condemnation. The one in charcoal, my Saviour, stared with a cold, blank expression.

And the third, the one in forest green, my Mate, watched the scene unfold, his green eyes, unreadable, fixed intensely on my face.

His lips were parted slightly, a muscle ticking in his jaw, and I couldn't tell if he felt pity, disgust, or the same desperate, horrifying pull I did.

I just wanted to disappear.

~~RYKER ASHWOOD~~Quinn took the wheel, Xavier who had settled in front of the seat switched positions, coming to the back seat. If I didn’t know better, I would have frowned at the behavior but there have always been something about these two. Something they’ve refused to disclose to me or anyone.Freya moved a bit closer to me to create more space for Xavier. Inadvertently, her bare thighs brushed my legs and my breath siezed. And although, the contact was brief, I felt it in every nerve. I shifted my legs away abruptly, almost pushing myself against the door of the vehicle. I released the breath I was holding. Something is wrong. I started to feel that way ever since I set my eyes on her at the banquet. Ever since my dormant wolf slightly stirred within me the moment she was forced into the backseat with me that very night. It must have been a mistake or my delusion, I tried to tell myself afterwards. Then I heard the thundering of her heart against her ribs, her unrhythmi

~~FREYA ASHWOOD~~Sweat pricked at my skin at the same time a cold shiver snaked around my spine. They were all around me and I turn out to be the object of focus. The chatters got worse now that none of my step brothers are accompanying me“It’s her! I promise I’d recognize her anywhere” one of the boys said, leering in disdain This brought more and more attention to me.“Why is she here? Openly in an academy? Isn’t she supposed to be in hiding, scared to her guts for being a murderer?”Everyone had something to say. Their words hurt but what hurt the most is being called a murderer. I knew better than to defend myself. They wouldn’t listen after all.I clutched my bag to my chest, walking to wherever my legs take me.Fortunately for me, I was able to find an empty corridor not too long after so I stayed there, embracing the silence. I carefully brought the curriculum draft the Principal had given me out of my bag to take a look at it. My vision blurred momentarily before shiftin

~~FREYA ASHWOOD~~I'm not sure what happened during the hours I passed out or what happened right before then. I'd stare at my saviour and mate blankly when they asked me what really happened with the meal… when they asked if I recall the face of the maid who had served me the food..I had no recollection that I was given food to eat in this manor. All I recognized when I awakened was fear! Fear of being back here. In this home. Fear of Alpha Damien and his loathe for me. Fear of what he might do to me when no one's watching. "So you're saying you don't remember what happened? Not even the maid who brought you a meal?" Quinn had demanded with a slight furrow on his brows while Xavier watched it all wordlessly, expressionlessly.Quinn had outrightly told me I was poisoned later on then went through about a hundred reasons I need to be extra careful in the manor.. I took in a sharp breath and blinked. "It's all over now. I'm fine" I mumbled, forcing myself back to the present. I st

~~XAVIER ASHWOOD~~I reached her room in a blur, the door swung wide open to reveal a sight that turned my blood to ice.She was sprawled on the floor, spilled blood right beside where she laid. A cold shiver ran down my spine and I felt the rage flooding my veins. In my head, Luka let out a snarl, clawing the edges of my consciousness. It's him.I know he did it. He had dared to strike even when I made it clear to him to back off. I dropped to my knees beside her. My fingers pressed against the side of her neck, searching for a beating pulse. For a harrowing five seconds, there was nothing. Then, came the weak throb."She’s alive," I breathed, the words coming off as a growl. I looked up at the maid, my eyes likely glowing with the hue of a shifting wolf. My beast is threatening to break out and hunt down whom we both know did this to her. "Get the healer. Now! If you aren't back in two minutes, I’ll have your head." It wasn't an empty threat. She vanished into the hall

~~FREYA~~The room was larger than the store I used at Aunt Beatrice's home in the blood moon pack but if given a choice, I'd rather be there than here. "If you aren't satisfied with this one, I could show you the other vacant ones on this wing" The maid pronounced, her tone shaky. I'd seen her earlier, alongside the other maids who had a lot to say about my return. "No. This is fine"She moved through the space and proceeded to unload the clothes in my box when I stopped her. I couldn't let her see how tattered my clothes are. "I'll do that myself"She shook her head in protest. "Lord Xavier ordered that I see to your perfect settlement into the manor. I can't go against that""I can assure you, I'm perfectly settled" She flashed me a small smile that seems forced. "I'll bank on that then"I waited till she was out of sight before slouching on the bed, reminiscing the events. This is my life now. Unfortunately...The door is pushed open violently, causing to jump to my feet.

~~FREYA~~"Please" I whispered again. "You don't understand. He hates me. He will kill me"My croaked pleas fell on deaf ears. "Don't make this harder than it already is" he said grumpilyMy "saviour" and the silver haired brother who looked a lot like father just stood there, uttering no words as they watched me struggle. Every fight I had left within me dissipated. Like always, I'm given no option in this too. I didn't miss the maids' shocked stares when they saw me walk into the manor, their surprised gasps. Some faces I remember, Some I don't. I tried to look out for one in particular. Tasha, the maid who had been my mother's favourite. She did love me at the time and strongly opposed the Alpha when he tried to banish me from the pack. I didn't see her. "Why is she here? Wasn't she banished by her own father years ago?" One of them questioned no one in particular, her voice audible enough for me to hear.We stopped abruptly. My mate turned to one of the maids. "Where is F
