Arielle.

When I finally managed to calm down I wiped my tears and put on my sneakers. I caught another glance of myself in the mirror before leaving and smiled a little shyly.

I didn’t look like the scared girl from before. I looked like someone ready for something new someone with hope.

I opened the door and stepped into the hallway, the morning light chasing after me. The villa was quiet almost too quiet until I reached the living room and saw him.

Kael was sitting on the couch his back relaxed but his presence still sharp and commanding as ever. The television was on some human news channel though I could tell he wasn’t really watching it.

His eyes flicked up the moment he sensed me and when they landed on me something unreadable flashed across his face.

He didn’t say anything at first just looked. His gaze moved slowly from my head to my legs and back up again and the corner of his mouth lifted slightly like he was amused but trying not to show it.

“What?” I asked crossing my a

Arielle. The mirror in the boutique’s fitting room reflected a girl I was still learning to recognize. Her hair freshly done sl fiery and full with skin glowing from laughter and the day’s sunlight and eyes too alive for someone who once forgot what living felt like. I was holding a green dress against my chest when the curtain rustled and before I could even say a word, Kael stepped in. He didn’t knock because of course he never did.“Alpha!” I gasped clutching the dress tighter to my body as if the thin fabric could hide the sudden rush of heat in my face. “What are you doing? You can’t just -”He shut the curtain behind him his tall frame filling the small space. The soft lighting hit his jaw in a way that made him look carved out of stone his eyes impossibly dark. “I told you I couldn’t sit there while they tried to eat me alive.” he said his voice was low amd teasing but edged with something deeper. I blinked confused and flustered. “Eat you ?- They were attendants not wolves

Arielle. The day was bright and warm when we stepped into the streets again and the thought of leaving tomorrow pressed softly at the back of my mind. I looked at my hair again and the maid wasn’t wrong. The ends were uneven and frizzy from too much fire and scissors and from all the careless chops I’d given it myself too over the years. I’d cut it every time it got in my way with a knife or dull scissors once even with a dagger. It grows toi fast. It was Jax that made me hate my hair. The memory tightened my chest and I swallowed it down before it could ruin the peace of this morning. I wasn’t that girl anymore. Not the one who flinched when someone raised theit hand or who stared at broken ends and thought she deserved it.I walked through the hall and found Kael sitting by the window, his boots propped up reading something that looked too old to be interesting. The sunlight slipped through the curtains and touched his hair making it look softer than it had any right to. When he

Arielle. The day before we were supposed to leave came too early with sunlight spilling into the villa through the windod. I woke up feeling that strange mix of excitement and sadness that always came with change. It had been weeks here maybe and though part of me missed home (just Diane and school stuff and a bit of Thomas with training) another part of me wasn’t ready to leave. I wasn’t sure what home even meant anymore. Kael had been gone for most of the morning talking with his men about routes and plans while I sat in the kitchen with the maids helping them pack and pretending not to feel the gnawing loneliness that came whem he wasn’t around. One of the maids her name was Lora, I think kept glancing at me as I struggled to tie up a small cloth bag. She finally sighed and said in her light human accent. “Miss forgive me for saying this but you have such a beautiful face and hair. Maybe before you leave, you should go fix your hair, no? It will make you glow even more.”“My ha

Are. The day had slowly begun to lean into gold when we found ourselves still walking through the market our hands brushing once in a while and every touch felt like something new something dangerous and sweet. The crowd had begun to thin out a bit though the air was still filled with laughter and the music of drums and ocean waves. Arielle was still full of energy moving from one stall to another like she was afraid she’d miss something. She had that innocent kind of excitement that made people turn to look at her and every time someone did, I felt that sharp possessive pull again in my chest. I didn’t even try to hide it anymore. I walked close always close enough that anyone watching knew she wasn’t alone. She had a bag full of random things by now from candles, bracelets, two books she couldn’t read yet but liked the smell of and a ridiculous sunhat she’d insisted on wearing for ten minutes before getting embarrassed when a kid laughed at her.“You’re enjoying this too much”

Kael. The deeper we went into the market, the louder and more chaotic it became. Drums echoed somewhere in the distance and couples were dancing barefoot in the sand. Some stood by the ocean fher arms around each other whispering and laughing. I caught Arielle looking at them withh a soft kind of longing flickering across her face before she quickly looked away. It made something in me ache“Do you miss it?” I asked quietly.“Miss what?”“Being free like that.”She shrugged pretending not to understand but the way she sighed gave her away. “Maybe a little. It’s just nice seeing people who aren’t afraid to live. I used to think the world was small but it’s not. It’s loud and messy and beautiful.”I stopped walking for a second just watching her as she turned around her eyes bright and her cheeks flushed from the sun. I didn’t say anything but gods she was right. The world was loud and messy and right now so was my head.We spent the next hour moving from one stall to another. She wa

Kael. Arielle walked ahead of me with her hair bouncing lightly with every step she took and when she reached the door, she turned around and smiled. That smile so innocent and sweet and somehow reckless made something tight twist in my chest. She didn’t even know what she did to me when she smiled like that. “Come on” she said grabbing my hand and tugging me toward the car waiting outside. Her palm was soft and small against mine her fingers curling gently like she trusted me more than she should. The moment we stepped outside, the air smelled like salt and warmth. I could already hear the distant sound of waves crashing somewhere behind the busy street. Arielle’s excitement was impossible to miss because her energy was contagious and even though I told myself not to I smiled a little. She was practically glowing the sunlight hitting her skin with her shorts showing off the smooth length of her pale legs. When she laughed softly at something she said to herself I clenched my ja
