Rhys’s POV

Alicia stood frozen near the entry table, the new phone clutched in her hand, screen still lit. Her face had drained of color, freckles stark against her dull skin. Her lips parted, but no sound escaped. The hand holding the device trembled once before her fingers tightened, knuckles whitening.

Something was very wrong.

I reached the bottom of the staircase and crossed the foyer with even strides, keeping my expression neutral. “Alicia.”

Alicia’s POV The morning we were due to return to campus felt heavier than I expected. I stood in the foyer with my suitcase, which was now packed with new clothes, books, jewelries, and cash in my wallet. Mirabel was bouncing on her toes beside me, already chatting nonstop. “Are you sure you have everything?” she asked for the third time, checking her own bag. “I packed extra snacks because campus food is trash. And the new sweaters we got? We’re wearing them on the first day back. Matching bestie vibes.” I smiled, trying to match her energy. “I have everything. Stop worrying.” Rhys appeared at the top of the staircase, dressed in a dark coat over a crisp shirt, looking every bit the billionaire CEO even on a travel day. His eyes found mine immediately, and something unspoken passed between us. “The convoy’s ready,” he said, his voice calm and authoritative. “Two SUVs in front, one behind. I’ll follow in my car. No risks this time.” Mirabel rolled her eyes playfully. “Dad, we

Rhys’s POV The living room glowed with soft lights from the massive tree Mirabel had insisted we redecorate together. Twinkling white lights mixed with the warm flicker of the fireplace, and the scent of pine, cinnamon, and freshly baked cookies filled every corner. Maria had outdone herself with dinner, she made roast turkey, glazed ham, mashed potatoes, and too many sides to count. We ate until we were comfortably full, laughing over stories Mirabel told about past holidays and the ridiculous gifts she used to beg for as a child. After dinner, we moved to the floor around the tree with mugs of spiced eggnog. We played games first, starting with charades, then a ridiculous round of “Never Have I Ever” that had Mirabel accusing me of being boring and Alicia laughing so hard she nearly spilled her drink. The atmosphere was light, easy, the kind of family evening I hadn’t allowed myself to fully enjoy in years. Then we started exchanging gifts, Mirabel dove in first, tearing into pac

Alicia’s POV After taking my bath, Mirabel and I spent some time laughing and gisting over brunch, stealing extra cinnamon French toast from each other’s plates while Maria smiled and pretended not to notice. After that, we decided to make the most of the remaining day by shopping. With two security guys and the driver in tow, we headed to the upscale mall downtown for Christmas shopping. Mirabel was in full festive mode, dragging me from store to store, piling gifts into our baskets for her dad, Maria, and even a few things for herself “because why not?” I tried to enjoy it. We tried on silly holiday sweaters, sampled too many candles that smelled like pine and vanilla, and argued over whether Mirabel’s dad would actually wear the ridiculous reindeer tie she picked out. The security team stayed discreet but close, and for a few hours I let myself laugh along with her, picking out a soft cashmere scarf I thought Rhys might like, then immediately putting it back because the thought

Alicia’s POV I sighed softly as I snuggled closer into the warm body beside me. Strong arms were wrapped around my waist, holding me securely against a broad, solid chest. The feeling was heavenly, safe, warm, and undeniably intimate. I burrowed deeper, inhaling the faint scent of expensive cologne mixed with clean male skin, letting the comfort pull me back toward sleep. “Oh shit, shit, shit.” The deep, sleepy voice rumbled against my ear, followed by the sudden shift of the mattress as the warm body rolled away from me. My eyes flew open, my heart jolting with confusion and a spike of fear. Rhys was sitting on the edge of the bed, his back to me, muscles flexing as he reached down to grab his discarded shirt from the floor. He was shirtless, the early morning light highlighting the broad expanse of his shoulders and the defined lines of his back. For a moment, I could only stare, my brain struggling to catch up. “Rhys?” I called out, voice still thick with sleep and surprise.

Rhys’s POV I couldn’t take my mind off how Alicia had smiled when Mirabel teased her about answering the call from the love of her life. That small, reluctant curve of her lips had stayed with me through dinner and into the quiet hours afterward. I couldn’t sleep, because I was pissed that she smiled at the thought of some dumb boy. Mirabel had gone to bed early, and Alicia had started sleeping in the guest room prepared for her, when she’s not watching movies throughout the night with Mirabel. I stepped out of my room, locked the door behind me, and pocketed the key. Then I headed straight for Alicia’s room. When I reached her door, I didn’t knock. I turned the handle, surprisingly, it wasn’t locked. So, I stepped inside, and locked it behind me with a soft click. Alicia was sitting on the edge of the bed in soft lounge pants and a thin tank top, a book open on her lap. She looked up, eyes widening when she saw me, and hurriedly stood up. “Rhys—what are you doing?” Her voice was

Alicia’s POV The house had settled back into a gentle rhythm that felt normal again. The silence was a relief so complete it almost felt suspicious, but I pushed the thought aside and let myself enjoy the quiet. This afternoon the three of us had gathered in the sunroom off the main living area. Sunlight poured through the glass walls, warming the tiled floor and the low coffee table where a chessboard sat between us. Rhys sat on one side, Mirabel and I sharing the other, cushions piled behind our backs. A half-eaten plate of lemon cookies rested nearby, and soft jazz played from the hidden speakers. Mirabel moved her knight with a dramatic confidence. “Check.” Rhys studied the board, one eyebrow raised. “Bold move.” “I’m feeling lucky today,” she shot back, grinning. “Your move, old man.” He countered smoothly, capturing her knight. Mirabel gasped in mock outrage while I laughed, the sound bubbling up easily, it felt good. For the first time in weeks, the knot in my chest had l

Rhys’s POV I’d been twisting and turning since we left the dining table, unable to take my mind off Alicia’s life, and unable to contain my happiness having confirmed from Hayes that she was truly the lady from that night. Her words at dinner kept replaying—the plane crash, the foster homes, the

Alicia’s POV Mirabel’s voice rang bright and happy, slicing through the crisp air like nothing was wrong. Like the entire world hadn’t just tilted sideways in the space of one heartbeat. I stood frozen on the gravel, my fingers clenched so hard around the handle of my duffel b

Rhys’s POV Alicia descended the last step, her eyes locking with mine for a split second. I stared at her with hopes that she’d maybe giggle and tell me she was just playing with the response she gave me in the library, and acknowledge that she’s really the girl from that night. My head was begi

Alicia’s POV Mirabel looped her arm through mine, tugging me out of the library with that bubbly energy that always made everything feel lighter. I let her drag me along, my legs still unsteady from the close call with Rhys. His question echoed in my head like a warning bell, but I shoved it down
