Chapter ThirtyFour

Elena’s POV

Sleep refused to come.

I tossed and turned all night, my mind spinning like a broken record. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my father’s face pale, terrified, his screams echoing in my ears.

And behind those screams… I saw him.

Valerio.

The man whose touch once made my heart tremble. The man I now suspected might be the reason my world was falling apart.

By the time dawn broke, I hadn’t slept a minute. My pillow was damp with tears, and my head pounded from exhaustion. But one thought pushed me out of bed I needed to see him.

If Valerio was truly the man behind my father’s suffering, I had to know.

And if he wasn’t… then I had to find out who was before it was too late.

I dragged myself to the bathroom. The mirror didn’t lie my eyes were red, my skin pale. I looked broken. Weak.

I couldn’t go to him like this.

So, I did what women like me were taught to do.

I rebuilt myself.

I turned on the shower and stood under it for a long time, letting the hot

Chapter One Hundred Thirty EightElena’s POVThe lights came back on with a soft click, as if the house itself had taken a breath and decided to spare us.Valerio’s body was still shielding mine, gun steady in his hand, eyes scanning the hallway. The footsteps had stopped the moment the darkness lifted. Nothing moved. No shadow lingered on the stairs. Only silence and the faint scent of snow drifting in from somewhere. He lowered the weapon slowly, but did not put it away.“False alarm,” he said quietly. “Power surge from the storm. The footsteps were the old pipes settling.”I nodded against his back, heart still racing. He turned, cupped my face, searched my eyes.“You are shaking.”“I am fine,” I lied.He kissed my forehead, then my lips, soft and lingering. “No one is here. The grounds are secure. I will have every inch searched at dawn.”I believed him. I had to.He led me back to the bedroom, gun placed within reach on the nightstand. The fire in the hearth had burned low, casti

    ### Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Seven#### Elena’s POVSnow kept falling, thick and relentless, swallowing sound until the world outside felt muffled and far away. Inside the mansion, fires crackled in every room, but the heat never reached my bones. I felt eyes on me even when I was alone.Valerio moved like a man preparing for war. Quiet calls in the study. New locks on every window. Guards doubled at the gates. He smiled for me, touched me gently, made love to me slowly each night as if tomorrow might not come. But I saw the storm in his eyes.Isabella had vanished from sight after the gala. No flowers. No perfume. No venomous smiles across crowded rooms. The silence was worse than her presence.I should have known it meant she was already moving her pieces. It started with a phone call.Valerio was in the shower, water running hard behind the closed bathroom door. His phone buzzed on the nightstand. The name lit the screen like a warning.Isabella Romano.I stared until it stopped.

Chapter One Hundred Thirty SixElena’s POVThe days after the party blurred into a strange rhythm. Valerio doubled down on security—new guards at the gates, cameras everywhere, his phone always close. He worked from home more, eyes flicking to windows whenever a car passed on the distant road. But he never let me feel caged. He touched me constantly: fingers laced with mine during breakfast, hand on my thigh under the dinner table, pulling me into his lap in the evenings while firelight danced across our skin.We made love every night, sometimes slow and worshipful, sometimes fast and desperate, as if we could burn away the shadows Isabella and Luciano had cast. But the shadows stayed. They arrived separately, but always when Valerio was pulled away.First came the gifts.A single white rose appeared on the windshield of my car one morning, tied with a black ribbon. No note. Valerio’s face went thunderous. He crushed it under his heel without a word. Two days later, a small package wa

Chapter One Hundred Thirty FiveElena’s POVThe party dragged on, crystal glasses clinking, laughter too loud, air thick with cigar smoke and expensive perfume. Valerio never left my side. His hand stayed at the small of my back, a silent claim that every man in the room understood. We moved through the crowd like a single unit, his body shielding mine whenever Isabella drifted too close. But around midnight, the orchestra paused and the host—Isabella’s older brother—took the microphone to welcome late arrivals. The double doors at the far end of the ballroom swung open.A man stepped through.Tall. Shoulders broad under a perfectly cut midnight-blue tuxedo. Black hair swept back, just long enough to curl at the collar. Sharp jaw, lighter eyes that cut across the room like glass. He moved with easy confidence, greeting people with handshakes and half-smiles that made women straighten and men measure him twice.I felt Valerio tense beside me.“Who is that?” I asked quietly.“Luciano De

Chapter One Hundred Thirty FourElena’s POVThe roses were gone by morning.I noticed it the moment I came downstairs for coffee. The front step was bare, frost swept clean, as if Isabella’s visit had been a dream. But the faint scent of white roses still lingered in the air near the door, sharp and mocking.Valerio stood at the kitchen island, sleeves rolled up, pouring espresso into two small cups. He looked calm, too calm, the way he always did when something dangerous was circling.“Good morning,” he said, sliding a cup toward me.I took it but did not drink. “Who moved the flowers?”He met my eyes steadily. “I did. Threw them out before sunrise.”I nodded slowly. “She wants you to know she can get close. That she’s watching.”His jaw tightened. “She won’t get close again. I doubled security on the gates. Cameras are being upgraded today.”I wrapped my hands around the warm cup. “She knew about the kiss below my ear, Valerio. That’s not a guess.”He set his cup down harder than ne

Chapter One Hundred Thirty ThreeElena’s POVThe first day of the new year dawned bright and cold. Sunlight poured through the tall windows, painting gold stripes across the tangled sheets where Valerio and I still lay. My body ached in the sweetest way, every muscle loose and satisfied. His arm was heavy across my waist, his breath warm against my neck. We had not slept much. Every time one of us drifted off, the other woke and reached again, hungry for more skin, more heat, more proof that this was real.I traced lazy circles on his chest, feeling his heartbeat steady under my palm. He stirred, pressed a kiss to my temple.“Morning,” he murmured, voice husky.“Morning,” I whispered back, smiling against his skin.We stayed like that until hunger finally pulled us from bed. Showering together again, slower this time, hands gentle and reverent. He washed my hair. I soaped his back. Small kisses, soft laughs. No rush.Downstairs, breakfast waited in the sun-filled conservatory: fresh f
