"Evacuate the elders!" High Alpha Marcus roared, his voice booming above the panic. "Warriors, to the perimeter!"
Rowan immediately stepped in front of me, drawing a silver dagger from his coat. "Elara, stay behind me. I’ll get you to the safehouse."
I couldn't move. My eyes were locked on Kael.
While everyone else panicked, Kael stood like a mountain in the center of the storm. He didn't even flinch when the second explosion rattled the stone floor. He casually turned toward the shattered entrance, his silver eyes narrowing as he caught the scent of the burning silver-bladed explosives.
"They aren't normal rogues," Kael said, his voice easily cutting through the chaos. "They're organized. They came for the reserve power grid."
"How the hell do you know that?" Rowan snapped, his breath coming in short, furious bursts. "You've been gone seven years!"
"Because I've been tracking them for six," Kael replied calmly. He threw off his heavy leather jacket, revealing a tight black tactical shirt beneath that showed off every muscle of his broad chest and scarred arms. "Rowan, take the west wall. Keep the civilians moving. I'll handle the breach."
"You don't command my warriors!" Rowan shouted.
"Do you want to argue about rank, little brother, or do you want your pack to survive the night?" Kael's voice dropped, laced with the terrifying weight of an absolute Alpha command.
Rowan flinched, the sheer authority in Kael's voice forcing his wolf to yield for a fraction of a second. Rowan cursed, gritting his teeth. "Fine. But this isn't over." He looked at me, grabbing my hand tightly. "Elara, go with the Beta guards. Now."
Before I could answer, Kael stepped between us. He didn't touch me, but his proximity broke Rowan's grip on my wrist. The heat radiating off Kael was like a furnace.
"She stays close to the main hall," Kael commanded softly, looking down at me. "The safehouse is compromised if they blew the southern grid. The eastern tunnel is safer."
"I can protect my own fiancée," Rowan snarled.
"I know you can," Kael said, meeting Rowan's eyes with dead seriousness. "But right now, your pack needs their heir on the front line."
Rowan stared at his brother, conflict tearing through his features. Finally, he cursed under his breath and turned to me. "Stay safe, Elara. I'll come for you the second the border is secure." He kissed my forehead, a quick, desperate touch, before sprinting out toward the burning courtyard with a squad of warriors behind him.
The hall cleared rapidly, leaving only a few guard units, the smoke, and Kael.
I stood near the overturned head table, my chest heaving. My heart was beating so hard it felt like it would crack my ribs.
Kael turned around slowly. The silver in his eyes hadn't faded. It glowed in the dim light of the burning fires outside.
"Are you hurt?" he asked softly. The terrifying command in his voice was completely gone, replaced by a gentle, low timber that vibrated right through my spine.
"I'm fine," I choked out, wrapping my arms around myself. "Kael... what did you do back there? Why would you say that in front of everyone?"
"Because it's the truth," he said simply, taking one slow step toward me.
"I'm engaged to Rowan!" I yelled, my voice cracking with emotion. "We are getting mated in three days! You can't just walk in here after seven years and claim me like some prize! I don't even know you!"
Kael stopped three feet away. He lifted his hands slowly, showing me his empty palms, refusing to crowd me.
"You don't know me," he agreed quiet. "And I would never treat you like a prize, Elara. I didn't return to destroy your life. I returned because I felt the moment your wolf matured last month. I felt the bond snap into place across three hundred miles."
"My wolf belongs to Rowan," I lied, tears stinging the back of my eyes.
"Does she?" Kael asked softly.
He didn't touch me, but he leaned in slightly and let out a soft, deep breath. The scent of rain and wild pine hit my nose, and my wolf, Luna, instantly went wild. She threw herself against my consciousness, begging me to touch him, to sink my fingers into his dark hair, to pull his lips down to mine.
A sharp gasp escaped my throat. My knees buckled.
Before I could hit the floor, Kael caught me.
His warm, massive hands gripped my waist, steadying me instantly. Sparks exploded across my skin everywhere his fingers touched. It felt like raw electricity pouring into my veins. An involuntary whimper slipped past my lips, and I instinctively grabbed his broad shoulders to anchor myself.
He stiffened, his jaw clenching as he fought for control. Up close, I could see the faint silver scars along his neck and collarbone.
"See?" Kael whispered, his breath hot against my ear. "Your wolf knows mine. You can deny it to Rowan, you can deny it to the council... but you can't deny it to yourself."
"Kael... please," I sobbed softly, torn between the overwhelming pleasure of his touch and the crushing guilt in my heart. "This is wrong. I love Rowan."
"Do you love him?" Kael asked, his silver eyes searching my face with painful intensity. "Or do you love the safety he represents? The quiet, predictable future your family built for you?"
"It doesn't matter!" I pushed against his chest, and to his credit, he immediately let me go, stepping back two full feet to give me air. "I made a promise. Rowan has been loyal to me for years. I will not break his heart because of a biological fluke!"
"A mate bond isn't a fluke, Elara," Kael said quietly, his voice tinged with sadness. "It's a soul recognition. But I won't force you. I will never force you."
"Good," I panted, wiping a tear from my cheek. "Then leave. Go back to wherever you were."
"I can't do that," Kael said. "Not yet. The attack outside isn't random. Someone opened the wards from the inside to let those rogues in."
My heart dropped. "An inside job?"
"Yes," Kael said. "And until I find out who is targeting the Blackwood family, I am not leaving this territory. Which means you and I are going to be seeing a lot of each other."
Before I could process his words, a loud, unnatural howl echoed from the courtyard a sound so filled with dark magic and ancient malice that the blood in my veins turned to ice.
The ground beneath us shuddered again. But this time, it wasn't an explosion.
A dark, shimmering fog began creeping through the shattered stained-glass windows, pooling across the stone floor like thick black oil.
Luna screamed inside my head, higher and more panicked than before.
GUARDIAN! Luna yelled, her voice reverberating through my mind with an ancient authority I had never heard from her before. THE SHADOW WARLOCKS HAVE RETURNED! RISE!
My body moved entirely on its own.
A blinding, radiant silver light erupted from my chest, illuminating the entire ruined hall. My eyes flashed not amber, nor brown, but a pure, dazzling moonlight white. The silver ring on my finger shattered into dust from the sheer surge of power exploding through my veins.
Kael stumbled back, his eyes widening in complete shock as he stared at me.
"By the Moon..." Kael breathed, staring at the silver light swirling around my arms. "The Guardian bloodline isn't extinct.”
Three months had passed since the Shadow King’s threat echoed across the Moon Lake. The eastern border, once a dark and forgotten wilderness, was now a fortified fortress line. Blackwood warriors, trained personally by Kael and Rowan, stood guard day and night alongside the newly allied neighboring packs. The dark mark on my hand hadn't vanished, but the silver light of my Guardian blood had turned it into a useless, dormant scar a quiet reminder of the war we knew was coming, and the freedom we had fought so hard to win.Tonight, there were no alarms. No shattered glass. No council elders whispering in dark corridors. The Blackwood Estate was bathed in the warm, golden glow of lanterns as the pack celebrated the autumnal harvest. Laughter vibrated through the newly restored Grand Hall, and music floated up toward the high stone terrace where I stood, looking out over the ancient forests of Blackwood Territory.I wore a dark velve
The dark mark on the back of my hand pulsed with a cold, rhythmic throb, looking like a shattered star inked in absolute black.Kael immediately grabbed my wrist, pulling my hand into the bright sunlight. His thumb brushed over the ancient rune, his silver eyes flashing with pure rage. "What did Vance do to you before we brought him down?""It wasn't Vance," I breathed, staring at the mark as the black ink sank deeper into my skin, disappearing beneath the surface like a dark dye. "When I healed you in the cellar, I felt a third presence watching us from across the eastern border. The Shadow King didn't just want my blood to open the vaults. He tagged me."Rowan stepped forward, his eyes locked on my hand. "The ancient texts say the Shadow King marks whatever he intends to harvest.""He isn't harvesting anything," Kael snarled, his voice dropping into a terrifying Alpha growl that made the surrounding warriors take a step back. "If he wa
I dragged Kael into the old herbalist cellar beneath the eastern wing, locking the heavy iron door behind us.He was losing consciousness fast. The dark Shadow poison was creeping up his neck like black spiderwebs, leaving his skin ice-cold and his pulse faint."Stay with me, Kael," I sobbed, lowering him onto the wooden slab. "Don't you dare close your eyes!""Elara..." Kael rasped, his voice barely a breath. He reached up, his fingers trembling as he touched my face. "The trial... in eight hours. If I can't walk... Marcus will take you.""You are going to walk," I said, setting my jaw. "Luna, show me what to do!"Inside my mind, my silver wolf howled, unlocking an ancient memory buried deep within my Guardian bloodline. Guardians weren't just warriors; they were purifying anchors. But to purge Shadow poison from an Alpha's blood, simple healing light wasn't enough. It required a soul-tether pan unreserved, complete acceptance of the
"Are you insane?!" I yelled the second the grand oak doors slammed shut behind us.We were in the quiet stone corridor leading to the eastern wing. Kael stopped, turning to face me with that maddeningly calm expression."Elara…""The Trial of the Bloodlines is a execution ritual, Kael!" I slammed my hands against his broad chest, tears of frustration boiling over. "Three Gammas! Silver-tipped weapons, no rules, to the death! High Alpha Marcus set a trap, and you walked right into it!"Kael caught my wrist softly, his large fingers curling around my pulse point. "I didn't walk into a trap, Elara. I took the only option that keeps you out of chains.""I could have fought the council myself!""And they would have labeled you a traitor, stripped your family of their Beta status, and locked you in the lower cellars," Kael said softly, his silver eyes searching my face. "This way, the blood on the floor is mine, not your
Rowan’s silver blade slipped from his fingers, clattering against the damp stone path.He didn't yell. He didn't shift into his wolf. The absolute silence hanging over the sacred lake felt far more destructive than any roar of anger."Rowan," I breathed, gently stepping out of Kael's arms. My heart slammed against my ribs, heavy with guilt, but I forced myself to stand on my own two feet. I didn't hide behind Kael. I walked straight toward my fiancé.Rowan stared at me, his amber eyes glassy with unshed tears. "I saw the way you held him, Elara," he whispered, his voice trembling violently. "I've known you for three years. You've never looked at me like that. Not once.""Rowan, please...""Is it true?" Rowan cut me off, looking at me with a raw, agonizing heartbreak that sliced clean through my chest. "When you look at him... do you feel the bond?""Yes," I admitted softly, the single word hanging in the cold night air like lead. "I
The red-eyed shadow wolves burst from the forest line like a tide of black liquid, their guttural snarls dripping with dark magic."Rogue vanguard!" Rowan yelled, bringing his silver blade up into a defensive guard. "Elara, behind me!""There are too many of them!" I shouted, watching as at least thirty dark, warped creatures circled the perimeter of the training grounds. These weren't ordinary wolves; their bodies were grotesquely enlarged, their veins black and pulsating with Shadow Warlock magic."Rowan, cut left to the armory and raise the alarm!" Kael ordered, his voice echoing with absolute command. "Elara and I will hold the choke point at the stone arch!""I am not leaving her with you!" Rowan shouted back."They're flanking the barracks!" Kael roared, his eyes flashing brilliant silver as his massive black wolf spirit flared around him like armor. "If you don't sound the alarm now, the younglings in the east w
