Maya's pov

His voice, sounding so silky and hot, makes me weak in the knees as I keep up my stare with wide eyes.

"Why the stare, haven't seen me before? Invite and welcome me in”

"Yeah, I don't understand your hesitation. Welcome him in. Don't keep him out there"

Mom jolts me out of my reverie and I slowly step out of the way, looking at him as he winks at me. I swear my heart did backflips.

Calm down, Maya. Deep breaths. Don't worry, it's going to be easy. But then I need to ask myself just one freaking question.

What in the name of the fucking heavens is going on?Why is he here?

And why the hell is he my tutor? Why not somebody else?

I slowly close the door, gazing at him with wide eyes while he shakes my mom's hand with a smile.

"It's good to be in your home, Mrs. Sanders. I heard about your application, and I took it up, hoping to help your daughter”

Mom smiles at him, gripping his hand tightly, visibly excited about his presence.

"Oh, of course. That is the reason why I hand-picked you for the job. I made a lot of inquiries and the reports I got were outstanding. Thank you” He smiles at her again.

"My pleasure. I took notice of how much she needed help after I said the application and took it upon me to help”

Mom kept up her excitement and it fills me with disgust. Why is she so excited about?

I just feel so confused, and I feel like my brain wasn't working and was finding it hard to think.

I remain rooted at the door, gazing at the hot, muscular figure standing in our living room.

Mom then diverts her focus to look at me.

"Okay, I guess you can go straight to the point. Anything you need, you can just call me. Pass my your phone?"

Professor Logan smiles and dips his hand into his pocket, taking out his phone.

"Yeah, Of course. I will always be up and ready to attend to anything that you need, and it's helpful to be in contact"

Mom nodded as she takes the phone and quickly types down her number into it and he turns his head to look at me with a devious smile and a wink, and I felt my brain do a quick spin around 360.

I swallow nervously and place my hand against my chest, heart rate increasing as I bite down against my bottom lip, gazing at him with confusion.

I mean, it goes into overdrive and loses control whenever I see him or come in contact with him, he smiles at me, he is teaching in class, he smirks at me, he gives me those seductive, charming eyes of his.

But him here as my tutor has my brain wanting to explode.

This is unbelievable and just so fucking outrageous and I can't accept this.

I quickly walk up towards them and the moment mom returned his phone, I gripped her arm tightly.

"It's a pleasure seeing you, Professor Logan. But I'd like to say a few words to my mother” He nodded.

"Yeah, Go ahead. I have no authority in here. Why are you asking for my permission?"

I smile sarcastically at him before dragging mom to a far place away from the living room where he couldn't eavesdrop and gave her a heavy frown.

"What the living fuck is the meaning of this, Mom?"

She scoffs and shakes her head before dropping her phone into her bag after typing quickly into it.

"I'm so sorry, but you will have to bear it. This is me handling matters about your life that you fail to do every damn time”

"Are you serious? Okay, I know I messed up, that I am not living up to your expectations, but you can't just make decisions like this behind my back."

She chuckles and shakes her head.

"Yeah, well, even if I followed it that way, there won't be a difference. I already know that you wouldn't have given your consent. So instead of going through that, I decided togo straight to the point and get it done"

"There are other ways we can sort this out, Mom. But quitting school and tutoring me? That is crazy. I have friends? And all the incomplete projects I have back at school? Everything?”

"This is why it is a punishment, Maya. Everything is thereby suspended until further notice. If you are able to live up to my expectations and surprise me at the end of the month, then I will restore everything back to you. But if not, This is how it will be for the rest of your life until you can get your path on the right path”

I look at her, my eyes wide and my lips wide apart with complete shock and disbelief.

"I can't believe you would actually resort to this. Mom, You are depriving me of everything I have ever wanted or desired. You are literally stripping me of my entire existence."

She laughs out loud and taps me on the forehead.

"Now stop being such a dramatic queen, Your professor is right out there waiting for you. I need you to get yourself together and attend lessons. And at the end of each day, you will tell me what you learnt”

"Really, Mom?"

"Absolutely. And even though it seems new and overwhelming, you will see the reason why I'm doing this."

"I am not Dad, okay? We are different , so the fact that he has always said that doesn't mean you should just force it on me. I have my own dreams and ambitions that I need to achieve."She shakes her head quickly.

"I am not in the mood for an argument, Maya. I have work to get to, and you are delaying me and your lecturer. Now get back there and do what needs to be done or you will make me angry."

I remain rooted to the spot as she walks past me, making her way towards the living room.

"Okay, that aside. Professor Logan, she is all set and ready. I'm heading out to work, You can get to know each other first of all" She begins with the same irritable smile.

"Oh, this actually needs no introduction. But then I want you to do your best within the space of this one month I'm giving you, okay?"

I hear her voice from the living room and close my eyes tight before slamming my fist against the wall with complete annoyance.

I can't believe this.

The fact that it is the very one person I have been struggling all my life to avoid is what makes it even far much worse.

God, I just feel like smashing my head against something.

Let me just end my life before this even begins.

I slowly walk out of my hiding place into the living room exactly the moment mom leaves the building.

Then I look up at Professor Logan, who looks at me and smiles.

"Well, well, here we are, Maya. Aren't you going to settle down so we can begin the lessons?" he says with a smile on his face that makes me know that this was not going to turn out good.

Maya's POVI stared at the closet for a long second, waiting for my brain to catch up.It was gone. The gun was gone.I blinked. Hard. Then opened the drawer beneath it. Pulled out the shoebox I’d used as a fake hiding place. Empty too. My heart started doing backflips.No. No no no. I didn’t imagine it. I put it right there, wrapped in a black shirt, under the old notebooks I don’t even read.“Theresa?” I called, my voice a bit too tight.“Yeah?” she answered from downstairs.I ran a hand through my damp hair, trying not to sound completely unhinged.“Did you touch anything in my closet?”“Your closet?” she echoed. “No? Why would I?”I paused. “Just asking. I thought I left something there but I can’t find it.”She hesitated, then said, “Well, your mom cleaned a little while we were out, didn’t she?”Oh God.Mom.My stomach sank. I slammed the closet shut and backed away from it like it was cursed. If my mom saw the gun, hell, even touched it, she’d have questions. Military questions

Maya's POVThe return trip was quiet at first. The kind of quiet that follows something gigantic and life-altering has just happened.Andrew gripped the wheel tightly, the headlights slicing through the night, and the wind moaning off the slightly broken windows.I was in back, beside Theresa, surrounded by her borrowed sweatshirt and still dripping from the river.I rested my head against the window, watching the trees pass by.My mind continued to revert to the river, the blood, the screaming, that girl being dragged under, and then Regan carrying her around like a wounded hero. I wasn't even aware of how hard I was gripping the edge of the seat until Theresa pushed me."Hey," she whispered. "You okay?"I nodded quickly. "Yeah. Just thinking."I waited for a moment before I asked, "You sleeping at my place tonight? Or to your apartment?"Theresa positioned herself on the couch, drew her arms out in front of her. "I'll stay at yours," she said. "But I'll make a quick dash by my pla

Maya's POV"Come on!" Andrew shouted, pulling my hand.I didn't protest, I couldn't. My legs still shook, but I let him pull me back to shore through the water, we both of us swimming. My heart refused to slow down. I was constantly glancing over my shoulder, waiting for Regan to materialize. Then I heard Theresa's voice."I see them!" She shouted.I spun around, almost choking on water. She was standing at the shoreline, gesturing out into the distance. "Regan!" she screamed again. "He's got her!"And there he was.Struggling hard, battling through the current with the girl slung over his shoulder. Blood flowing behind them like a second shadow."Oh my God," I whispered, fear and relief churning in my throat.Andrew let me go and swam towards them, swimming quickly. "Theresa, call an ambulance!" he shouted as he passed by.Theresa was already fumbling for her phone, her hands shaking like crazy.I ran along the riverbank, barefoot and soaking wet, until I could see them pulling her

Maya povPanic shut over my lungs. I kicked with everything I had and broke the surface with a tearing gasp."Maya? What did you see?" Theresa was already swimming backward toward the shore."Swim," I spat. "Now. Fast.""What is it?!""Crocodile!"Her eyes went wide, and she didn't need any more explanation. We both turned and started swimming hard, water slapping our faces and splashing behind us as we kicked toward the bank.I didn't dare look back. Every horror movie I had ever watched flooded my mind. I just kept going, faster, faster, until my feet reached rock bottom and I scrambled out of the water.Theresa was close behind me, panting."Oh my God," she was able to say, "I thought you were kidding.""I don't kid about things that can eat me alive."I turned back to the river and scanned the surface. It was still again."Did anyone else catch a glimpse of it?" Theresa breathed, whispering.I shook my head. "I don't think so. But we need to warn the others. That thing is huge.""
