SARA:

The air smells of burnt wood, iron, and snapped bones.

I don’t freeze. If I freeze, I die, or worse, I get stuck here forever. While Mom’s wolf lunges at the rogue in our living room, tearing into its neck with a wet, heavy crunch, I dive for my bed. My hands grab the leather straps of my hidden duffel bag from beneath the floorboards.

I throw open the back window. The cool night air hits my face, but so does the stench of war. Down in the courtyard, two shadows tear through the fray with lethal precision.

Kyle’s golden fur is painted crimson as he rips through an attacker’s throat, a vicious, breathless growl tearing from his chest. Right beside him, Zayne, a pitch-black shadow of pure death, snaps a wolf’s spine with a sickening crack. They aren’t the boys who teased me or stood guard over me. They are monsters. Alpha blood born for execution.

Run.

I leap from the window, landing heavily on the damp grass. Staying low, I use the chaos to my advantage. While the pack is focused on the perimeter breach, I sprint through the tree line, my heart hammering like a trapped bird in my chest. Every branch that snaps feels like a gunshot. Every howl in the distance makes my blood run cold.

I don’t look back. Not at the burning village. Not at my parents. Not at the twins.

I run until my lungs burn, until the scent of pine and wolf fades, replaced by the bitter, metallic tang of diesel exhaust and wet asphalt.

(Three Years Later)

“One oat milk latte, extra shot,” I say, flashing a polite, practiced smile as I slide the paper cup across the counter to a woman in a sharp business suit.

“Thanks, Sara. You’re a lifesaver,” she mutters, grabbing it and hurrying out into the drizzle.

I wipe down the espresso machine, leaning my palms against the cool stainless steel and taking a deep breath. The rich aroma of dark roast coffee and toasted hazelnut fills my lungs. It buries the faint, lingering scent of my wolf, hiding me beneath layers of mundane human life.

For three years, I’ve been a ghost.

I live in a tiny studio apartment, pay my bills in cash, and never let anyone get close enough to catch the faint golden flecks in my eyes when the full moon rises. It’s quiet, and I love every single second of it. Here, no one expects me to submit to a Pack Alpha. I am just Sara, a quiet barista who minds her own business.

“All wrapped up, Sara?” my manager asks, checking his watch.

“Yeah, just heading out,” I say, pulling a black hoodie over my head and zipping it to my chin.

Instead of going straight home to my empty apartment, I make a detour down a side street toward The Rusty Nail, a dim, low-key dive bar. It’s my small, secret guilty pleasure on rough days, a place where the ambient noise lets me just melt into the background.

I slide onto a vinyl stool in the darkest corner of the bar and order a double whiskey. The amber liquid burns pleasantly down my throat, dulling the edge of my exhaustion.

A few feet away, two men in navy uniforms slide into a booth. Police badges glint under the flickering neon signs. I take another sip, intending to tune them out, but my sharp hybrid hearing picks up their low, harsh hushes over the jukebox.

“I’m telling you, Vance, they’re getting bigger,” the older officer mutters, leaning across the sticky table. “Animal control pulled two massive carcasses out of the north woods yesterday. Blood tests came back weird, nothing like standard timber wolves.”

My glass freezes halfway to my mouth.

“Feral strays?” the younger officer asks, frowning.

“No way. These things are the size of motorcycles,” the older one sneers, tapping his knuckles against the wood. “The higher-ups are quietly assembling a special task force. The directive is simple, shoot on sight. If these beasts are breeding near city limits, we hunt them down and stop them before they become a threat to the city.”

My heart drops like a stone into my stomach.

The whiskey in my glass sloshes as my hand begins to tremble. Shoot on sight. Stop their breeding.

They are talking about rogue wolves, maybe even pack scouts tracking the borders. Humans have no idea what they are actually dealing with, but they have the firepower to cause a massacre.

No matter how hard I tried to run from the violence of the werewolf world, no matter how much I feared their brutal nature... I don’t want them dead. They are still my people. My blood.

My breath hitches in my throat as panic claws at my chest. I set my glass down with a sharp clink, my mind racing with a sickening realization: the quiet human bubble I built to protect myself is about to become a warzone.

His golden eyes wander over my trembling form, a dark, ravenous possessiveness gleaming in thei

SARA: I don’t sleep. The police officers’ words ring in my ears like a continuous alarm. Shoot on sight. Stop their breeding.I spend the entire night sitting on the edge of my mattress, staring at the muted neon lights leaking through my window blinds. My hands tremble as I scroll through job boards on my phone, searching for low-profile openings in cities three states over. I need a plan. I need a deposit for a new studio, a fresh forged ID, and a new job before I vanish again. Running blindly without a safety net is how you get caught, or worse, end up dead.By 5:00 AM, I’ve mapped out a target city and saved three potential apartment listings. One more pay check, I tell myself, wiping my bleary eyes as I lace up my boots. Just hold on for two more weeks, get paid, and slide away like a shadow. The morning air is crisp and bitter, but stepping into the warm, roasting-coffee scent of the cafe instantly grounds me. ZAYNE: : The scent of copper and burnt cedar was so thick it coated the back of my throat. I tore my jaws from the neck of the last rogue, letting the lifeless body hit the dirt with a dull thud. My chest heaved, my claws dripping with dark, viscous blood as the high voltage rush of the shift slowly retreated.Beside me, Kyle shifted back to his human form, wiping a streak of crimson from his cheek with a careless laugh. “Not bad for a Tuesday night,” he muttered, tossing his hair back.I didn’t laugh. My wolf was still pacing on a tight leash, claws digging into the dirt, drawn toward the Beta’s cottage by an agonizing, invisible tether. “Sara,” I grunted, my voice raw from roaring.I didn’t wait for him. I took the porch stairs in a single leap, shoving past the splintered front door. Beta Thomas was already in his human form, kneeling beside his wife, both of them covered in soot and minor cuts. But my eyes didn’t stop on them. My gaze locked onto the shattered bedroom window ups

SARA: The leather straps of my duffel bag dig into my palms as I tuck it beneath the floorboards under my bed. Every seam is packed to bursting with standard human clothes, savings I’ve spent months hoarding, and a forged ID that doesn’t carry the mark of the Bloodmoon Pack.Tonight, when the moon hits its peak, I’m leaving. It isn’t because I hate my life. That’s the hardest part. I love the earthy scent of our timber cottage at the edge of the territory. I love the way the morning light filters through the forest canopy, casting golden stripes across our kitchen table. But as a half-human, half-werewolf, I live every day with one foot in a world that terrifies me. The raw, primal violence of pack culture, the suffocating rules of hierarchy, the looming expectation that I will one day submit to a mate’s bond, it suffocates me. I want normal. I want safe.“Sara! Dinner’s cooling!” My mother’s voice carries up the stairs, warm and sweet. I swallow down the lump in my throat, smooth
