EVA'S POV:

"Are you serious?" I asked Ethan in shock, and he nodded, his lips curled in a smile.

"Yeah. How much do you want me to pay you, but you must abide by my rules and work as my secretary only," he said, and I gulped hard.

"I haven't been a secretary before. I just graduated with a degree in software engineering, and I want to be a software developer. I applied at Almond Tech, and they offered for me to start work by Monday," I said, and his brows furrowed.

"I will pay you 2 million. If you accept, you can come to work in my company by Monday. Failure to show up, then you lose, as I am in need of a new secretary," Ethan stated, and I gulped hard and accepted his card.

"Fine. How about the medicine that you want me to take?" I asked, as he had almost forgotten the contraceptive pill in his hands.

"Oh, here it is." Ethan gave me the bottle, and I took two pills and gulped them down with the bottle of water that he gave me.

"Don't forget. By Monday. If you fail to show up, then I will get a replacement for you. I will be expecting you. What's your name?" Ethan asked, pausing as he turned to walk away from me.

Lowering my head and avoiding his eyes, I replied, "Eva Brooks."

"Alright, Eva. I will be looking forward to meeting you again. Take your things and leave. The hotel staff will be here to clean the room." After saying that, Ethan turned and walked out of the room.

And my eyes fell on the red blood stain on his white bedsheet.

Looking at the card in my hand, I shook my head and went to reach for my handbag. I put the card inside and took out my phone.

I saw four missed calls from my mother.

"Hello, Mom," I answered her call, and she yelled at me.

"Eva, what did you do to provoke Jacob? He has cancelled his partnership with your father and called off your wedding engagement. How can you cheat on him at a time like this? When he is planning to marry you. What came over you?" Mom yelled, and I felt guilty.

"Mom, I am sorry. Layla set me up," I tried to explain, but Mom cut me off.

"Shut up. Layla didn't set you up. You went to the man and cheated on Jacob. How can you do this to us? We disown you as our daughter. Don't bring your shameful self home to us again," Mom yelled, and before I could explain, the call ended.

Shaking my head, I stood in the hotel room and sighed.

Gripping my phone tightly, I tried to call Jacob one last time to explain to him that it was all a mistake and I would never cheat on him.

However, the phone rang and he ended the call. When I tried to contact him again, I heard, "Sorry, the number you are trying to call does not exist."

"What?" My brows furrowed upon realising that Jacob had blocked me.

'Did five years of our relationship mean nothing to him?' I knew that Jacob had always wanted to have sex with me, but I stopped him and told him we should wait until our marriage. Now, I have cheated.

Wiping my sobs away, I wore my bra and pant, before I reached for my green dress and wore it.

After that, I wore my black shoes and adjusted my hair, before taking a final glance at the room to ensure that I didn't forget anything.

I walked out of the hotel room, while the hotel staff waiting went in to clean it.

Then I made my way to the elevator and rode down to the last floor.

When I walked out, I felt the stare of eyes on me. But no one stopped me. The impressive luxury hotel was filled with different calibre of people entering and going out.

Making my way out of the hotel building, I exited the premises too, recalling that I wouldn't have come to this hotel if not for Layla's insistence.

Hailing a taxi, I went home even as my mother had warned me not to return home again.

I knew that I had no one to go to.

Jacob had broken up with me and I couldn't go to his place, and not just that, my relatives would be furious with me as it was because of Jacob that my father's small loan company could soar higher. Now that Jacob had withdrawn his support and demanded that I repay him for all the money that he had spent on me, I knew that none of my family members would want to help me at this point.

When I arrived home and paid the cab, I walked up nervously to the gate of the bungalow house where my parents lived. My father owned this house, as he bought it after Jacob and I started dating.

Reaching the black gate, I knocked and the security man pulled the gate open.

"Miss Eva, you are not allowed into the house," Tom said, and my brows furrowed.

"Why? This is my father's house. I want to see him and explain to him," I begged Tom, but he shook his head.

"I'm sorry. Your mother said that if I let you in, then I will lose my job. I don't want to lose my job, madam." Tom went back into the house and locked the gate on me.

"Wait, Tom," I knocked again, but he wouldn't answer me.

Sighing, I paced about the gate, thinking of what to do, as I could not believe that my family would abandon me at a time like this.

”Was this how people fell from grace to grass?”

I tried calling my mother, but her number, the same number that she used to call me, wasn't connecting.

Calling my older brother, Cruz, he demanded, "Eva, how could you cheat on Jacob at a time like this? When we were looking forward to having you both become married?"

"Cruz, I was set up. I didn't mean to cheat on Jacob. Believe me, Layla set me up," I said, and my brother sighed.

"I warned you to stay away from Layla. That girl is a snitch, and you didn't listen to me. She is not from our place, and also, her parents are richer than ours," my brother fumed, and I sobbed.

"I am sorry. I should have listened to you," I said, and he sighed.

"It's fine. Where are you now? Mom and Dad are angry and they don't want to see you. Also, Jacob is demanding compensation and saying that you never let him touch you, so you didn't do anything for him in the five years you both dated," Cruz said, sighing in frustration.

"Cruz, can I come over to your place?" I asked him, knowing that he had just gotten married.

"Hmm. Sure, but you know, Maddison and you don't get along. Don't worry, I will talk to her to make her understand," Cruz said, and I sighed heavily, feeling relief that I could rely on him.

Layla's betrayal still stung, and I couldn't call any of my female friends again.

I went back to the road, hailed a cab, and went to my older brother's house.

EVA:Standing in the elevator with my boss, I frowned as the elevator rode to the last floor. His thick perfume scent filled my nostrils, and I did not like the idea that he had asked me to accompany him shopping for his sister's birthday.'Was this the first birthday that Ethan was celebrating his sister's birthday?' I pondered, but kept silent as we walked out of the elevator together. The other staff stared at me, and I knew that the gossip would increase. Ethan appeared unconcerned as I followed him to the executive car.Once we entered the car, the air thickened, and thankfully Pete was behind the wheel. He asked, "Where to, boss?""The mall. Where else? It is Angelina's birthday tomorrow," Ethan replied, his gaze on his phone while he typed on it.I looked out the other side of the car window as Pete started the car and drove off.The car fell silent as Pete drove toward the nearest mall. When the car arrived at the mall's parking lot, I breathed out with relief that I could esc

EVA BROOKS:My chest was rising and falling heavily as I stepped into my office. I felt the stares from the other staff. As I moved back to my desk, I pulled my bag and stuffed the package inside. Why would Ethan give me this present and tell me to wear it? I pondered.I didn't glance over at the other staff. I turned on my laptop and checked Ethan's schedule for the rest of the day.---------ETHAN OWEN:I knew Eva was uncomfortable around me, but I couldn't help wanting to be close to her. Even though I hadn't accepted my feelings for her, I was concerned about her.I didn't want to give Freya any gifts. She would assume I love her, which wasn't true. So I gave the gift to Eva, who was on my mind. Sighing, I continued with the rest of my work for the day, signing some business proposals while glancing over at Eva in her office.I watched her, smiling as she went through her phone, and my heart tightened, wondering if she had found a new boyfriend or gotten back with Jacob Stone.

EVA"I'm set," I replied, reaching Elora's car and pulling open the side door before getting in with her.She grimaced. "I don't like how Dad is trying to set me up with someone." She fastened her seatbelt as I did the same."You shouldn't take Dad's words to heart," I replied calmly as she inserted the car keys."That's fine. How are you? Have you made up your mind to give me the money to resign from Dallas Group? After all, Ethan might like you," Elora spoke softly as she ignited the engine and drove out of the house.I reclined in my seat and gazed out the car window."I want to repay him, so that I owe him nothing. He has a fiancée, and I don't want to come between them," I said calmly.Elora scoffed. "Nonsense. I figured Freya might have found out the truth. But it's fine. Once I save enough money, I will resign."Elora kept her gaze focused on the road, and the rest of the car ride fell silent.Once we reached the industrial area, my sister slowed her car, and I got out as I saw

Eva's POVWaking up in my room on a bright Friday morning, I yawned and stretched as I knew that this was the last working day of the week. The Owens Group didn't work on Saturday and my mind raced with the thought of skipping Angelina's birthday party the following day. She had always been a bully and she looked down on me, believing I wasn't up to her standards.Sighing, I made my way into my bathroom and bathed quickly. As I turned on the shower, the cold water cascaded down my body and soothed my tiredness. After my bath, I rushed out of the bathroom and went to find my office clothes in my wardrobe.Once I selected a long-sleeved white shirt and black skirt, I donned it, buttoned my shirt, before moving over to the mirror to stand in front of it and take care of my appearance.Once I was styling my hair and spritzing on my perfume, I grasped my handbag and picked up my phone to see if I had any text messages. There was a text from Jacob.Jacob: [Hello, babe. (Freya's POV)"Why is Ethan always pushing me away? Anytime I offer to visit him, he keeps turning me down?" I growled in the quietness of my room, as I couldn't believe that I was desperate to win Ethan's attention."Elora"—her image popped in my mind. She claimed that she didn't have anything to do with Ethan.I was standing in my room, wearing a white nightdress and a white jacket over it. I moved over to the fridge to get a drink for myself as I watched the news."Breaking News: The CEO of Owen Group, Mr. Kennedy Owen, has cleared the air on one of their hotel guests who was drugged and set up. Owen Group has compensated the young lady named Eva Brooks with the whopping sum of 10 million and also promised the public that such an act will not happen again," the female broadcaster on the television screen in my room announced, and my brows furrowed."So Ethan paid Eva compensation for getting abused. But who is the man that she slept with? Why does it feel like Ethan is lying, and h

(Ethan's POV)Standing in my room, I ran my fingers over my head and tousled my short black hair as I couldn't resist the urge to contact Eva. For some unknown reason, I just longed to hear her voice and to know how she was. And if she had received the transferred money that my dad offered as compensation."Hello," Eva's nervous voice reached my eardrums as she answered my call."How are you doing tonight?" I asked her, moving to sit in the white chair in my room. My heart is thudding in my chest."I am fine, sir. How about you? You left the company on time," Eva said, and I couldn't tell if she was truly worried about me or if she only wanted to know what I was up to. After all, I was the one who called her."I am fine. I am calling to know if you received the transferred money that my dad offered as compensation for what happened to you in my hotel?" I asked, listening to her soft breathing."Yes, I got the money, sir. I want to repay you back as part of the debt that I owe you for
