Eva's POV

~~~~
Arriving at the white gate, Cruz parked the red sports car at the frontage, and I asked him, "How about the other houses? Are all the houses the same?"
"No. Houses in this White Estate are expensive and costly, and only billionaires can afford to live here," Cruz replied calmly as he waited for the gateman to pull the gate open for him.
"So your wife is a billionaire? Then tell her to pay Jacob Stone for us," I asked my brother, and he laughed.
"It's easier said than done. Maddison is not really a billionaire, and moreover, you incurred the debt. You should think of how to earn money to pay Jacob off before he comes to arrest you," Cruz said as he ignited his car and drove into the compound.
"Why will Jacob come to arrest me? I didn't steal from him or intentionally cheat on him. Moreover, where am I going to get work that will pay me enough to cover a ten-million-dollar debt? At Almond Tech, I was offered a job with a salary of $200,000. How many months will I have to work to be able to pay Jacob?" I said, not wanting to mention Ethan Owen to my brother.
"You should have thought about all this, Eva. If you cannot pay Jacob, you should go back and beg him. I'm sure he will forgive you and take you back. Moreover, he loves you very much," my brother advised, and I sighed as he turned off his car.
"Jacob did so much for you, Eva. Try to reach out to him and ask for forgiveness. I'm sure he will forgive you. Also, I cannot ask Maddison. It's enough that I helped you get a job at Almond Tech. I don't think she will want to get involved in your scandal," Cruz said, and I nodded.
"It's fine. I will find a way to reach out to Jacob later," I said, and my brother nodded and reminded me, "That reminds me—Maddison's younger brother, Noah, is at home. You shouldn't get on their wrong side." Cruz advised me before he unlocked his side door, and I got out of the car.
The sunny wind hit my head and blew through my slim body as I got out in my green midi dress and looked at the white duplex that loomed in front of me.
The last time I was here was one year ago, when Cruz and Maddison had just welcomed their son. Now, I was here again. I knew how Maddison looked down on our family because she felt we were poor, but because Cruz loved her, he condoned her silly behavior.
Ringing the doorbell, Cruz waited for someone to pull the door open even though it was his own house.
The entrance door swung open, and a young man wearing a blue top and black jeans stood there and peered at us.
His eyes fell on me, and he smiled as Cruz and I entered the living room.
The young guy resembled Maddison, and I didn't need anyone to tell me who he was.
"Welcome, brother-in-law," he said as Cruz and I entered the living room.
"Yeah, Noah. This is my sister, Eva," Cruz introduced us, and I smiled at Noah, as I had seen him once on the day of Cruz and Maddison's wedding.
"I know, brother-in-law. You don't have to introduce us," Noah said, his tone playful as his brown eyes shamelessly raked over my body.
Unable to hide his curiosity, he asked, "Brother-in-law, why does she have hickeys all over her body? Or is it an allergy?"
"Noah," Cruz's expression hardened as he didn't approve of Noah mocking me.
Maddison strode downstairs, her steps slow on the stairs as she peered at me.
"Cruz, why would you bring your sister here? Her scandal is the talk of the town—that she cheated on her fiancé, got disowned by her parents—and yet you brought her here," Maddison's sharp voice cut through the air, and Cruz turned to face her.
"Babe, my sister didn't deliberately cheat on Jacob. They can still settle their differences. Just let her stay with us for a few days until she can find her way and settle her issues with my parents," Cruz tried to explain to Maddison, even though he was the man of the house.
"No," Maddison said sharply. "What do you want my friends, our family members, and business partners to say? First, your sister cannot work with us at Almond Tech because her scandal is all over the internet—that she refused to let her fiancè touch her yet was secretly doing hookups with any available rich man she could find," Maddison said as she glared at me.
"Babe! Eva is my sister. She is not that type of woman. She didn't intentionally agree to do it. Just let her stay here for a while," Cruz begged his wife on my behalf, but she refused.
"No, Cruz. I don't want your sister here with us. Let her find her way or go back to Jacob. She is not welcome here. Didn't you see the news? That billionaire Jacob Stone is demanding fifteen million dollars from your family. Are you going to help Eva pay for it? Let her leave!" Maddison shouted, and I tried to speak.
"Sister-in-law..."
"Don't call me that. I am not your sister-in-law!" Maddison yelled at me, her eyes shooting daggers my way.
"I cannot be sister-in-law to a cheap slut like you. So get out of my house before you corrupt my son or get laid with my brother for money," she accused, and my jaw dropped as I turned speechless.
"What? Big sister, how can you accuse me of such?" Noah said, laughing despite his sister's anger.
"Who knows what Eva is capable of when she doesn't take her eyes off rich guys?" Maddison said, her voice cold, and Cruz raised his voice at her.
"Babe, Eva is my younger sister. She is not leaving this house if your brother stays. If you don't want my sister to stay with us, then your brother is leaving too," Cruz said as he refused to let me leave. But I didn't like that he and his wife were quarreling because of me.
"It's okay, brother. I will go. You don't have to fight with your wife because of me," I said, but my brother shook his head.
"No, Eva. Maddison doesn't allow you or Elora to come here, but she allows her own siblings here. Isn't that partiality?" Cruz asked, his voice sad, and I sighed.
"It's fine. I will find a hotel to stay in until I can find an apartment," I said, wanting to leave, but my brother stopped me.
"No, Eva. I said you are not leaving. Let Maddison come and take you out. Let me see," Cruz insisted, and Maddison stood speechless, peering at us.
"Come, let me show you to the guest room," my brother insisted, but I shook my head.
"Brother, let me go. You don't have to quarrel with your wife because of me," I said, but he shook his head.
"Eva, if I do not stand up for you, who will? You are my sister, and not because you made a mistake will I cast you away. You also helped me in my lowest. So if Maddison wants to end our marriage because of you, it's fine. She can send us out together," my brother said, his tone firm, and Maddison stood there speechless, looking at us.
    (Eva's POV)I couldn't believe my ears that my boss, Ethan Owen, was asking me for a kiss as compensation for forgiving Mary Zion.How did he expect me to kiss him? Though Ethan was very handsome, I would have loved to try that again, at least now that I wasn't drunk, to imagine that bravery that led me to kiss Dominic City's richest CEO."No. I cannot do that," I said, striding back to my office, where I saw most of the staff on the sixth floor peering at me. I heard some of them gossiping loudly."What the f*ck was Eva doing in that office with Mr. Owen for so long? I hope it's not what I'm thinking?" some of the guys gossiped, as they winked at me, but I dared not look at them."Shut up, you both. Don't get us into trouble. What more could Ms. Brooks do for Mr. Owen? I heard she pleaded on Mary's behalf. Imagine getting blacklisted from Owen's Group. No other company will hire Mary if she gets kicked out with such a reputation. Eva tried to forgive Mary, as I won't forgive Mary for
    (Ethan's POV)I knew Eva was afraid of me. She stilled as my finger touched her cheek. Her skin was so soft that I felt blood flowing in my veins again. Her red lips enticed me to draw her closer and seal my lips on hers to silence her mouth, but I held myself back. I didn't want to scare her. After all, she'd seen Freya, and she knew I was getting married to a woman my family had arranged for me.Though I hadn't informed Eva that I hadn't been with any women before. She was nervous around me, even at the meeting, and I found her behavior attractive.Eva moaned as I gently pressed the ice pack to her cheek. I admired the contours of her face, and I imagined having a cute little daughter like her. Her blue eyes sparkled, and I wanted to deal with Mary for crossing the line, but I couldn't when Eva had come to beg on her behalf.I wanted to punish Eva for forgiving an enemy. My grandfather lost his life because of his enemies who plotted his death, and I cannot allow any enemies close t
    (Eva's POV)"Please, Mr. Owen, Mary is sorry. Don't fire her. Her family depends on her. Her dad is sick. You cannot fire her because of me. If she leaves, I quit my job too," I declared, and Ethan's eyes darkened."Are you threatening me, Eva?" Ethan asked, his voice chilling me on the spot, as he hadn't spoken to me so coldly before. I recalled Pete's warning not to drag him into Mary's mess.I recalled that Ethan had fired many staff for small errors, let alone an error as big as Mary's."Please, forgive her. I wouldn't dare threaten you. I am nothing compared to you. I am only scared her father will die, and I am to blame for it. Let it slide, please…" I clasped my hands together, kneeling beside Mary.Ethan drew a breath and shifted out of his office chair. He rose to his feet, and Mary was trembling seriously.I wanted to comfort her. I wondered why she had picked on me to provoke Ethan. I was scared, but I knew that Ethan wouldn't hurt me, but what about Mary?Ethan strode out
    (Eva's POV)I wasn't expecting Lily to come into my office and bring me another takeaway meal."Aww, thank you," I said, appreciating her thoughtfulness. Although the company's meals were free, an extra meal cost about $1000."You're my new friend, Eva. I was shocked to see Mary slap you like that. She's so full of herself, and I'm sure it's because she wants the boss to notice her. And now that he brought his fiancée over, she took her anger out on you," Lily explained, and I smiled sadly."Oh, I had no idea. But I stumbled and fell. I didn't mean to not pay attention to where I was going. I was also wrong," I acknowledged, because if I hadn't been lost in thought, I would have seen Mary's leg in the way. But because of my thoughts about Ethan and his fiancée, I embarrassed myself."It's fine. I hope we can be friends?" Lily asked with a cute smile."Sure. Thank you, Lily," I said, accepting her phone and giving her my contact information. She was getting ready to leave for her offic
    (Eva's POV)The hushed muttering filled the cafeteria as Lily and I walked in.Unlike before, when the cafeteria would be noisy, this time it was silent because of Ethan and his guest.I tried so hard not to peer at Ethan and Freya's table, but I could feel their eyes on me, especially Freya's.It seemed Elora was right. Freya probably already knew that Ethan slept with me."Eva, why are you nervous? You haven't even raised your head or called the waitress. What are you thinking about?" Lily asked softly, snapping me out of my trance."Nothing. I'm fine," I replied, forcing a tight smile.Before I could say anything more, Ethan called my name professionally, "Ms. Brooks."I stilled, rose to my feet, and peered in his direction.*Why is he calling me now that his fiancée is with him? Is he trying to humiliate me? After all, I was the one who shamelessly went to meet him and demanded that he sleep with me?*Remembering my job as Ethan's personal secretary, I hurried over to his table to
    Eva's POV:When Ethan dismissed me from the meeting and sent me to his office, I felt relieved because I didn't want to discuss things with Jacob. I had already told Jacob that I wanted us to take a break and for the media reports about us to stop trending. He agreed, but I hadn't expected him to show up at work at Owen's Group.I had been thinking about my relationship with Jacob, pondering if I should give him a second chance, he might humiliate me again or even have me arrested for my mistake.As my mind swirled with thoughts of the good times Jacob and I had shared, the sound of the office door unlocking jolted me, and I rose to my feet. Ethan walked in, exuding an air of arrogance as he peered at me coldly.I had expected Ethan to fire me, but he didn't. Seeing him and knowing that we had shared a night together made me uncomfortable to meet his gaze, so I lowered my head as he strode into his office."Why are you acting nervous around me? Wanting to go and see your fiancé?" Etha
