Chapter 89: Small Hands, Quiet Truths

Jace’s POV

After Devon left, the house settled into a different kind of quiet.

Not the heavy, suffocating silence I was used to—but something softer. Expectant. Like the walls were holding their breath.

I stood in the kitchen and forced myself to focus on the task in front of me. Cooking. Actual cooking. Not reheating something or assembling food with the efficiency of a man who ate only because he had to.

Funny how it was only when I was around Alex Aurora and my grandmother that I steeped into the kitchen to cook. I hardly prepared meals like this for myself.

I decided on something simple and familiar.

Aurora’s favorite lunch—at least, it used to be. She prepared it numerous times when we were together and I knew she liked it…a lot.

I marinated chicken breasts lightly with olive oil, lemon, garlic, and herbs, the way she liked it. Nothing overpowering. I chopped vegetables for a warm salad—bell peppers, zucchini, cherry tomatoes—roasting them sl

Chapter 94: The Truth She Was Afraid OfAurora’s POVI gave Kelsey a look and shook my head, hard enough that it made my temples throb.“No,” I said, pushing myself off the couch. “No. That can’t be true.”I started pacing the length of the living room, bare feet brushing against the floor as if movement alone could untangle the mess in my head. My hands moved restlessly—through my hair, over my arms, clasping and unclasping in front of me.“It shouldn’t be true,” I added, my voice sharper now, like I was arguing with an invisible jury. “It can’t be.”Kelsey didn’t interrupt. She just watched me with that steady, infuriating calm she always had when she knew something I didn’t want to admit. And for someone who I was more level headed than to be looking at me like that right now kind of unnerved me.“Do you even believe that?” she asked finally.I stopped short, turning to face her. “It doesn’t matter if I believe it or not.”She raised an eyebrow.“It just shouldn’t be true,” I conti

Chapter 93: The Things She Didn’t SayAurora’s POVBy the time Alex finally fell asleep, the house felt quieter than it should have.Kelsey had given him everything she had, and then some. She sat cross-legged on the living room floor with him, playing a ridiculous card game she made up on the spot, letting him win dramatically every single round. She listened—actually listened—as he talked nonstop about Magic Man. About the shark apron. About helping in the kitchen. About bubbles and prayers and Finding Nemo.He basically told her everything he had told her on the way over, all over again, going on about how he liked Magic Man a lot.She laughed at the right places, asked the right questions, reacted with just the right amount of awe, like everything he said mattered. And to her credit, it did.Alex talked until his words blurred together, eyelids drooping, sentences trailing off into half-finished thoughts. When he finally leaned against her shoulder, thumb tucked into his palm, Kel

Chapter 92: The Man She Thought She KnewAurora’s POVI stood a few steps behind Alex and watched him do what he always did—throw his whole heart into introductions.“This is magic man,” he said proudly, tugging Kelsey’s hand toward Jace like he was presenting a prized discovery.Jace stood there, hands relaxed at his sides, that familiar unreadable calm settling over him. For a moment, it felt unreal—two parts of my life standing in the same space, intersecting without warning.Kelsey looked up at Jace and laughed.“Oh,” she said easily. “I know Jace already.”The change in Alex’s face was instant. His smile faltered. Just a little. His shoulders dipped, eyes flicking between them like he was trying to understand how this information had been kept from him. It was subtle, but I caught it. I always did.“You do?” he asked, sounding almost betrayed.Kelsey immediately crouched down to his level, her voice warm and animated. “Yeah, sweet boy. But this is the first time I’m meeting him

Chapter 91: An Awkward Lunch With Aurora But an Ignorant AlexJace’s POVAurora paused. She gave me a look but didn't say anything."I don't hate it." She said lowly after what felt like hours even though it was only minutes.I should be happy that she said she doesn't hate it but that wasn't enough especially since I could see that she really wasn't interested in the food itself.I'd put in effort to prepare this and she wasn't even eating it. I couldn't even get mad at that, instead of just filled me with the realization that I had done this too at one point.I had picked at the food she had served for us and instead of focusing on her, I focused on work and when I was done picking at the food, I stood up without acknowledging her.Honestly, I did that numerous times. Times I couldn't count and if this was payback...I deserved it.I released a slow sigh, barely audible, and reached for my fork again even though my appetite had already begun to fade. The food sat untouched on my plat

I lifted both hands slowly, palms out. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. I wasn’t trying to sneak up on you or anything."She studied my face for a second, then looked away, clearly trying to calm herself.“Where’s Alex?” she asked.“In the living room,” I said quickly. “Inputbon finding Nemo for him."That seemed to ground her. She nodded once, the tension in her shoulders easing just a fraction. And then—silence. Not awkward at first. Just… heavy. We stood there, facing each other in a room that felt too small for the history pressing in from all sides. The robe she wore was the exact same one she always wore when we were together.
