REMI’S P.O.V.

I hated what I saw in the mirror the next morning.

The dark circles under my puffy eyes were a dead giveaway that I had been crying, and I didn’t want anyone to see them.

If I were going to survive here as their Alpha’s mate, I needed to prove to them that I was strong and unaffected by everything that had happened to me over the past two days.

Lifting my hand to poke at the area beneath my eyes, a thin glint of white gold caught my attention, and I felt the last of my patience sn

REMI’s P.O.V.The bed dipping beside me made me stir, and I blinked a few times as I took in the dark room.It took everything in me not to fall back asleep when I realized it was still night, but I knew I wasn’t alone. I could feel Malric’s presence in the room, and couldn’t resist rolling over to face him.He sat on the edge of the bed with his back to me, his elbows on his knees. He looked tense and stressed, not reacting at all to my moving, as if he hadn’t even realized I was awake yet.My hand itched to reach out and touch him, to try to offer any comfort I could, but I knew that was just the mate bond talking. He and I weren’t there yet, and I was surprised he had even come to our room. He hadn’t slept here last night, so to see him here now was shocking. My heart felt like it wanted to flip in my chest when I noticed he was in nothing but shorts, his back bare for me to see. Even in the darkness, I could see the scars that littered his skin and the way his muscles tensed and m

REMI’S P.O.V.I never expected the King of Lycans to look so carefree. The stories about him were filled with cruelty, coldness, and death.Yet, as he threw his head back and laughed, the way the moon and candlelight illuminated his face made my stomach swarm with butterflies, and I had to look away. Otherwise, I risked saying or doing something that would embarrass me even more. For the rest of dinner, we filled the time with small talk. Every time our eyes would meet, I felt the cool night air get trapped in my lungs until I looked away.He was intoxicating, yet no matter how much wine he had, he didn’t seem to be intoxicated. It was like it had no effect on him, so I knew my plan to get him to spill his secrets had failed.Instead, all other serious topics were avoided as we ate, and I found myself having a great time.Malric could be charming when he wanted to be, and despite my reservations, I was enjoying our… date.“Thank you for dinner,” I said as we walked through the garden

REMI’S P.O.V.Tears filled my eyes as I caught my breath, my throat burning, and my heart slamming into my chest. The mortification was crippling, and I felt my knees buckle as I grabbed the edge of the table with one hand while the other remained clutching my throat.“You… you wanted this to be a date?” I repeated, my voice coming out deeper and rougher than before, and I reached forward to grab my drink as he stepped back to give me space.“I kind of assumed it would be when I asked you out,” he said, and while I was a giant mess, he seemed completely unfazed. His expression was devoid of emotion, like a statue, and I wished I could open our bond and find out what he was really feeling or thinking in this moment, but I couldn’t.He had closed it, blocking me completely, something I was growing to resent over the past two days.We may not have met by conventional means, but it did seem only normal for us to start dating. I mean, every mated pair I had ever met had been marked and mat

MALRIC’S P.O.V.My beast was purring.Purring! Like a cat!Never in my life have I experienced him purring, let alone being this calm or happy. It was unusual and unexplainable. If I weren’t so taken by her beauty, too, I might have wondered if she had drugged us.Yet, as I moved her hand to the inside of my elbow, freeing my skin from her touch, I felt myself begin to return to normal.“Where are we going?” Remi asked, her voice so soft it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.I opened my mouth to speak, but instead reached out to grab her as she stumbled in her heels. Her chest pressed against my arm as I turned and wrapped my other around her, my hand finding her lower back to steady her and my mind going empty. She was taller than other wolves I had crossed but still shorter than a standard Lycan woman, and I couldn’t help but appreciate how delicate she felt in my arms. And that she didn’t shy or flinch away.“Alpha, we are ready for you,” Sarah, one of our kitchen staf

REMI’S P.O.V. I bit my lip as I stared into the mirror, eyeing the frilly skirt of the dress with distaste. Never in my life had I worn such a… bright outfit before, and something about it made me want to crawl out of my skin. “I look like a highlighter,” I said, glancing over my shoulder at the maids laughing behind their hands as they stared at me. There had been a very heated debate about what kind of lingerie I had to wear under my dress for tonight before I finally warned them that if they didn’t leave it alone, I was going to set the entire collection of skimpy lace on fire the next time I was alone in the room. This dress felt like punishment for that, and based on the smirk on Toothy-Tina’s face, I knew it was. “I don’t think your services are needed anymore,” I said, turning to face them when they giggled at my comment. Eyes went wide, and the laughter stopped as I stood firm, crossing my arms over my chest. “Excuse me?” One of the maids snapped, stepping forward. “You

REMI’S P.O.V.My hands shook as I walked down the hall toward the noisy dining hall. It seemed all the warriors had stopped training to eat, because their deep, boisterous laughter could be heard from behind the closed doors.“This way,” Greyson said, not bothering to spare me a look, and I knew I had burned any semblance of a bridge I had with him by calling him a half-breed.Turning away from the main doors, I followed the Beta as he led me to a single door at the end of the hall.He pulled it open, and the voices grew louder, joined by the smell of food making my stomach rumble.I sighed, relieved that I wouldn’t have to walk through a room full of Lycans to get the Malric’s table, because sitting just before me were Malric and Ellowyn.“You shouldn’t have to wait for her. You work hard and need to eat. Here, try this. It’s incredible!” Ellowyn said, lifting her fork to Malric. My vision went red as I watched my mate lean forward and eat the bite of pasta right off her fork. Her sm
