~ RONAN ~

I can swear waiting has never felt this long for me. I can't count how many hours I've paced, looked at the ceiling, run my hands through my hair, or even engaged Kael in a long argument about why he should've kept his emotions to himself.

Nikolai is already back to doing his Beta job.

Finally, the long-awaited moment comes when Elias walks outside, closing the door quietly behind him. Trust me, if there's anything I hate, it's the look doctors carry when they're coming out from a patient… over the years, I've come to read meaning from his facial expressions, the ones he wears when something drains him, or when he's about to announce that another one of my wives didn't make it… I hate that look.

"Don't tell me anything negative, you said she's going to be fine."

He exhales slowly, glancing briefly at the chair right beside me and pointing there for me to sit.

I'm anxious, and fuck… I don't have time to give it a full thought. I sit, and he sits right next to me.

Another exhale. "I'll start with the most immediate concerns and work outward." He clasps his hands in front of him. "The injuries on her wrists and forearms are a mix of healing and fresh wounds. Some of those injuries should have been treated days ago. The fact that they weren't means they've had time to develop early signs of infection, which we've cleaned and dressed. They'll heal, but it's going to take time, and she'll need the dressings changed regularly for the next two weeks."

I can't say a word, not because I don't want to, but because it's the only thing I can trust myself to do right now.

"Her weight is significantly below what it should be for her age and height. She's eighteen, Alpha. Her body should be at its strongest developmental point right now." He pauses. "It isn't, and the malnutrition isn't recent, this isn't a week without food, It's been prolonged. Months, possibly longer, of inadequate nutrition. Her body has been running on reserves that ran out a long time ago, and it's been compensating ever since."

He gives me a moment to process that before continuing.

"Her bones are showing early signs of deterioration as a result. Density loss. In a shifter her age, that's not something that should be possible. Our wolves are supposed to protect against that. But without a wolf actively present to support the healing process, her body has been functioning closer to a human's than a shifter's."

"I'm going to kill Warren, but before then, I need her to open up and tell me everything that went wrong and why she was being tortured…"

"Also, her dentition has taken a significant hit from the malnutrition. Enamel erosion, some sensitivity, one molar on the lower left that's going to need attention within the next few weeks before it becomes a bigger problem. Again, it's fixable, but it speaks to how long this has been going on." He clears his throat. "She's going to need a very structured nutritional plan. Small meals, frequently, nothing too heavy too soon or her stomach won't handle it. We need to reintroduce food gradually and build her back up properly. It's going to take a minimum of three months before her body starts showing real recovery, possibly longer."

I drag a hand down my jaw.

"And why does she look so pale?"

"That's partly the malnutrition and partly other factors, her iron levels are critically low. We're talking about a level of anemia that should have had her unconscious weeks ago. The fact that she's still upright and functional is… frankly, remarkable." He says it as though it's some big miracle. "She's stronger than she looks. Whatever she's been through, she's been fighting it without anyone helping her fight it."

The hallway goes very quiet. With all these revelations, I can only think one thing, she's strong, and the fact that she's still alive is nothing short of a miracle.

Elias meets my eyes, and then he drops a bomb that nearly stops my heart.

"She wasn't born mute."

"What the fuck?"

"Her vocal anatomy is completely intact. There is nothing physically wrong with her throat, her larynx, her vocal cords, which means structurally, she is entirely capable of speech. What's preventing however is psychological."

Honestly, it's hard to believe one person could go through that much. Physically and psychologically… it explains everything, why she flinches, why fear lives so deeply in her, why trust doesn't come easily to her. And the more I learn, the angrier I get. I need to know everything they did to her.

"From my years of practice what she has is consistent with trauma-induced mutism. It's the mind's response to something, an event, or more likely a sustained period of events, so overwhelming that the brain essentially pulls the emergency brake on verbal communication. It's a protection mechanism. It was forced on her through whatever she experienced, until her own mind decided silence was the only safe response."

The wall across from me suddenly becomes very interesting. I stare at it.

I can already picture myself ripping apart whoever made her go through this, bit by bit until all that's left are their carcasses, which I'll leave behind to be fed to vultures.

"Can it be reversed?" I ask. My voice comes out even, not gruff.

"Yes," Elias says, and something in my chest loosens just slightly. "But not quickly, and not by force. The worst thing anyone can do is pressure her to speak. Any kind of urgency or expectation around her voice will reinforce the association between speaking and danger." He holds my gaze pointedly. I get the message. "What she needs is therapy. Consistent, patient, trauma-informed therapy with someone she can build trust with over time. The voice will come back when her brain decides it's safe enough to let it. That timeline is different for everyone. It could be weeks. It could be months. It could be longer."

"But it will come back?"

"With the right support and the right environment, yes. The prognosis is good." He tilts his head slightly. "The environment matters enormously, Alpha. She needs to feel safe. Consistently, reliably safe, in a way she can predict. Not safe one day and uncertain the next. The brain needs proof, repeated proof, before it starts to undo what it built to protect her."

"She's resting now," Elias adds. "She was exhausted before we even started. I'd recommend letting her sleep through to morning without disturbance. Her body needs it more than it needs anything else right now."

"Sure, I'll let her have her rest," I say, knowing I need to make necessary arrangements. I need to get her clothes, and in as much as I want her to stay in my room, she'll need her own space first to get accustomed to our pack.

He nods, satisfied, and turns to go back inside.

"Elias." I call, needing to tell him something more.

He stops right in his tracks, directing his gaze at me.

"I need your help again, with finding me the best therapist that'll help her. I don't care what it costs or where they're from, I need the best one."

He nods, his smile brightening, showing the wrinkles at the sides of his eyes. "Already on my list, Alpha."

  • Claimed By The Cursed Alpha   Chapter 15

~ ROSELLE ~I'm scared. Hell... I'm fucking terrified. Why wouldn't I be when that girl already walks in and reminds me exactly how I'm going to end up dead?I try to sweet-talk myself into believing he's kind... that he's nothing like Warren and my former pack. I try every sane reason to convince myself, but there's no logical explanation strong enough for me to hold on to the idea that Ronan wants to save me because he loves me for me.There isn't. She mentions his brides-to-be who are women with stronger genes, women who can talk, women who are better princesses than I'll ever be.And hell yeah, they end up dead. They fucking do.There's no possible way in the universe that all he feels for me is anything more than some twisted, drawn-up need for a bride. Because what am I? Nothing but a mute who's useless. And if I add murderer to the list...Hell. I don't even know what that makes me anymore.Like I'm sinking deeper into my fears, I'm certain it's all going to end the same way it

  • Claimed By The Cursed Alpha   Chapter 14

~ RONAN ~The last person I expected to see in Roselle's room is Mara. Kael growls inwardly when her smell hits us before I even reach the door.On the bed, Roselle is already sitting up, her face pale and blank, as though Mara had said something rude to her.I feel my pulse rise, anger surging through me, even though I'm trying to keep it under control. As much as this entire scenario looks like, "Hey, new mate, this is my mistress," I'm fucking pissed that Mara entered the room without an order from me. What the fuck did she say to her?"What the fuck are you doing here, Mara?"I growl, my eyes already turning red. Kael rises to the surface, ready to tear her apart if she dares say anything stupid."Nothing, Alpha... I was just welcoming our future Luna to the pack. She's so pretty," she says, shrugging her shoulders.Only a fool would buy Mara's sweet, coy smile. I know how vicious she can be, and trust me, her nothing is never nothing.I dart my eyes to Roselle. "Are you alright?

  • Claimed By The Cursed Alpha   Chapter 13

~ RONAN ~Watching her sleep is like the best thing that has ever happened to me. Her long lashes flutter softly, and Kael is finally at peace. Trust me when I say listening to the rise and fall of her chest feels like the only thing keeping me sane. I can't take my eyes off the contour of her face, her pouty lips, her innocent expression that tells me she's too precious for this world… and I can't stop wondering how someone so soft survives in a world this cruel.Kael hasn't stopped gloating in my head with that smug, wolfish grin of his that screams I told you so, and even though I want to tell him to shut the hell up, I'm grateful I listen and decide to stalk her by the window. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known about the nightmare she has, and I wouldn't have been able to gather her in my arms.Am I too possessive to crave to know the demon haunting her dreams? I need answers… and I'm definitely going to get them, even if it means slaughtering Warren and damning the laws of the Alli

  • Claimed By The Cursed Alpha   Chapter 12

~ ROSELLE ~Fire. Fire. Fire. Fire. The word tears through my throat so violently, as the fire won't stop and keeps expanding from the lantern. I had expected it to be like the usual time, just the way it always caught when I lit it every night before Father would pull me onto his lap and tell me stories until my eyes grew heavy with sleep. Instead, this time, it's expanding through the curtains, climbing the walls, and I'm standing in the middle of Father's study watching it happen, and my legs won't move and my voice is...Dad.I'm screaming. I can hear myself screaming, my voice as loud as a quake, bouncing off walls that are already beginning to blacken at the edges. I reach for him — he's at his desk, slumped forward, and when he lifts his head, his eyes are wrong, bloodshot as though he is ill."Dad. Dad. DAD."I keep screaming his name. My hands are shaking so badly I can barely see them through the smoke and the heat and the way my vision keeps blurring at the edges because I

  • Claimed By The Cursed Alpha   Chapter 11

~ RONAN ~It's ridiculous, I know. Almost laughable that, as an Alpha, I'm standing outside someone's window, staring and stalking like some fucking obsessive bastard out of a dark romance book. It's creepy. I know that too. I could walk through her door like a normal person, but under the circumstances, I can't.She's curled up to her side, facing away from the window, one hand tucked under her cheek. The IV line has been removed, Elias must have sent someone to disconnect it after I left. The blanket is pulled up to her shoulder, and her breathing is slow and even. She looks pretty asleep. So fucking pretty I think it should be illegal, and it is illegal, knowing that if she catches me staring she's going to take me for some sort of creep. But I've never seen anyone so fucking pretty in my life.I bob my throat, swallowing hard.I'm still watching, inwardly battling between leaving and staying exactly where I am. She's fine. She's asleep. I should leave. One second I'm about to lea

  • Claimed By The Cursed Alpha   Chapter 10

~ RONAN ~She smiled. She actually smiled, and if that doesn't do something to my chest then I don't know what else to call it.The moment Celeste mindlinked me that she was done eating, I needed to check on her. Kael was more than excited at the idea of seeing her one more time, practically vibrating at the back of my skull like an overgrown puppy I'd never admit to owning. And now that we're done, I feel at ease, even though Kael is furious we're leaving her room and not planting ourselves outside her door for the rest of the night. It's for the better. She needs space, she needs rest, and once she's recovered we'll have time. I assure him as I walk down the hallway toward my room.Today has been long. So fucking long, and Warren has played a huge part in fueling my anger. I need rest, and I need my lawyer to follow up with Warren first thing tomorrow morning, which is a reminder that the contract he signed isn't going to bail on him as easy as he thinks.I push open the door to my
