~ RONAN ~

I'd already mindlinked Elias before we even pulled through the gates.

He's waiting when we arrive, him and his team, and I'm grateful for it because the injury on her wrist alone is enough to make Kael lose his mind, and that's only what I can see. There's no telling what's underneath that gown that I haven't seen yet. She looks pale, and this is not in a tired-pale way, it's the other that comes from the inside, from the body quietly negotiating with itself about how much longer it can keep going.

I'm not taking chances.

It takes everything in me to step back and let Elias do what I called him here to do. I'm not a doctor. I know that. Standing between her and the only person who can actually help her right now would be stupidity dressed up as protection, and I refuse to be that man. So instead, I step back crossing my arm as I watch.

'She needs us punk," Kael snarls in his gruff tone.

'I know she does, but we'll be a threat, so, it's better we stay here and watch,"

Elias approaches her slowly, his voice so calm as though he knows what she had gone through. I let out a breathy exhale, knowing she's in safe hands. It's why I trust him. It's why I called him specifically.

"It's not going to take long," he continues with a voice so soft. "You have my word, we're not here to cause you any harm or discomfort. All I want to do is make sure you're well. Nothing more than that." He pauses, giving her space to absorb it. "You've had a long day, so please permit us take care of the rest. You don't have to do anything except let us help you. Can you do that for me?"

She nods. But her body says something else entirely.

She's pushing backward on the examination bed, her spine pressing toward the wall behind her, like she can create enough distance between herself and what's coming if she just keeps moving. I'm particularly drawn to the spike in her heartbeat—thump, thump, thump. I can hear it from where I'm standing, and it's going at a rate that makes my own chest tighten. Why is she so scared of someone helping her?

"Tell Elias to stop," Kael orders.

"That won't solve anything. If he stops, we have no qualifications to heal her, and the last thing we want to do right now is lose her."

"She's refusing help because she thinks he's a threat."

"I know."

"Then do something."

I cross the room quietly, and I watch her track me as I approach, those hazel eyes following my every step, maybe trying to calculate what I'm about to do.

The expression on her face turns to fear. She's already frightened as she shifts backward, her eyes scanning around for maybe a possible place to run to. Did she think I was coming to hit her?

I squat down, right there on the floor, dropping to her level so she doesn't have to look up at me.

Those frightened hazel eyes meet mine, and silently, they're pleading with me not to hit her.

"Roselle."

The sound of her name coming from me tastes strangely nice. The contract had her name on it, but this is the first time I'm actually calling her by it. Her eyes soften, maybe finally realizing that I mean no harm.

"This man right here," I say, keeping my voice low, just enough for her, "is Dr. Elias. He's been with this pack for over eleven years, and there is nobody in this building I trust more than him." I hold her gaze, not pushing, not rushing her. "You're not in Westbrook anymore. Whatever that place was, whatever it did, it doesn't follow you here. These people are not going to hurt you. They're not going to judge you. Not a single thing they see tonight leaves this room."

I reach out slowly pushing a strand of hair away from her face.

Hell.

The hurt in her eyes says more about what she's been through than anything her hands could ever sign.

"I need you to trust me," I tell her quietly. "Just for right now. Just for this."

The room is completely still.

I can feel everyone holding their breath, Elias and his team waiting, but none of it matters right now. All that matters is those hazel eyes staring right at me.

Her eyes scan the room, from Dr. Elias to his team, then back at me, and then she nods, slowly.

I let out a breath I genuinely didn't realize I was holding. Standing to my feet, I turn to Elias and give him a single nod. He steps forward, and she remains still without pushing backward.

He looks at her directly. "Is it okay if I examine your wrist?" he asks, raising one hand and asking for her permission before he so much as touches her wrist.

She glances at me, and I hold her gaze before nodding once in reassurance. Then she looks back at Elias, and after a brief hesitation, she nods.

Stepping back toward the window, I stuff my hands in my pockets as I watch Dr. Elias and his team get to work.

Rolling the gown gently, Kael growls loudly at the sight of injuries, some faded and some looking so fresh… hell fuck, did they also do that to her?

Dr. Elias turns to me, and immediately… I'm aware that I just scared her.

"You need to excuse us, Alpha. We've already made progress in earning her trust. I wouldn't want you to scare her again while we're trying to examine her."

I nod, cursing Kael as I step outside the room, pacing to and fro outside. I'm more than nervous.

"Is she going to be okay?" I ask through the mindlink…

And Elias' response comes immediately. "You need to let me finish, Alpha, and relax… she's going to be fine. Try not to interrupt."

  • Claimed By The Cursed Alpha   Chapter 15

~ ROSELLE ~I'm scared. Hell... I'm fucking terrified. Why wouldn't I be when that girl already walks in and reminds me exactly how I'm going to end up dead?I try to sweet-talk myself into believing he's kind... that he's nothing like Warren and my former pack. I try every sane reason to convince myself, but there's no logical explanation strong enough for me to hold on to the idea that Ronan wants to save me because he loves me for me.There isn't. She mentions his brides-to-be who are women with stronger genes, women who can talk, women who are better princesses than I'll ever be.And hell yeah, they end up dead. They fucking do.There's no possible way in the universe that all he feels for me is anything more than some twisted, drawn-up need for a bride. Because what am I? Nothing but a mute who's useless. And if I add murderer to the list...Hell. I don't even know what that makes me anymore.Like I'm sinking deeper into my fears, I'm certain it's all going to end the same way it

~ RONAN ~The last person I expected to see in Roselle's room is Mara. Kael growls inwardly when her smell hits us before I even reach the door.On the bed, Roselle is already sitting up, her face pale and blank, as though Mara had said something rude to her.I feel my pulse rise, anger surging through me, even though I'm trying to keep it under control. As much as this entire scenario looks like, "Hey, new mate, this is my mistress," I'm fucking pissed that Mara entered the room without an order from me. What the fuck did she say to her?"What the fuck are you doing here, Mara?"I growl, my eyes already turning red. Kael rises to the surface, ready to tear her apart if she dares say anything stupid."Nothing, Alpha... I was just welcoming our future Luna to the pack. She's so pretty," she says, shrugging her shoulders.Only a fool would buy Mara's sweet, coy smile. I know how vicious she can be, and trust me, her nothing is never nothing.I dart my eyes to Roselle. "Are you alright?

  • Claimed By The Cursed Alpha   Chapter 13

~ RONAN ~Watching her sleep is like the best thing that has ever happened to me. Her long lashes flutter softly, and Kael is finally at peace. Trust me when I say listening to the rise and fall of her chest feels like the only thing keeping me sane. I can't take my eyes off the contour of her face, her pouty lips, her innocent expression that tells me she's too precious for this world… and I can't stop wondering how someone so soft survives in a world this cruel.Kael hasn't stopped gloating in my head with that smug, wolfish grin of his that screams I told you so, and even though I want to tell him to shut the hell up, I'm grateful I listen and decide to stalk her by the window. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known about the nightmare she has, and I wouldn't have been able to gather her in my arms.Am I too possessive to crave to know the demon haunting her dreams? I need answers… and I'm definitely going to get them, even if it means slaughtering Warren and damning the laws of the Alli

  • Claimed By The Cursed Alpha   Chapter 12

~ ROSELLE ~Fire. Fire. Fire. Fire. The word tears through my throat so violently, as the fire won't stop and keeps expanding from the lantern. I had expected it to be like the usual time, just the way it always caught when I lit it every night before Father would pull me onto his lap and tell me stories until my eyes grew heavy with sleep. Instead, this time, it's expanding through the curtains, climbing the walls, and I'm standing in the middle of Father's study watching it happen, and my legs won't move and my voice is...Dad.I'm screaming. I can hear myself screaming, my voice as loud as a quake, bouncing off walls that are already beginning to blacken at the edges. I reach for him — he's at his desk, slumped forward, and when he lifts his head, his eyes are wrong, bloodshot as though he is ill."Dad. Dad. DAD."I keep screaming his name. My hands are shaking so badly I can barely see them through the smoke and the heat and the way my vision keeps blurring at the edges because I

  • Claimed By The Cursed Alpha   Chapter 11

~ RONAN ~It's ridiculous, I know. Almost laughable that, as an Alpha, I'm standing outside someone's window, staring and stalking like some fucking obsessive bastard out of a dark romance book. It's creepy. I know that too. I could walk through her door like a normal person, but under the circumstances, I can't.She's curled up to her side, facing away from the window, one hand tucked under her cheek. The IV line has been removed, Elias must have sent someone to disconnect it after I left. The blanket is pulled up to her shoulder, and her breathing is slow and even. She looks pretty asleep. So fucking pretty I think it should be illegal, and it is illegal, knowing that if she catches me staring she's going to take me for some sort of creep. But I've never seen anyone so fucking pretty in my life.I bob my throat, swallowing hard.I'm still watching, inwardly battling between leaving and staying exactly where I am. She's fine. She's asleep. I should leave. One second I'm about to lea

  • Claimed By The Cursed Alpha   Chapter 10

~ RONAN ~She smiled. She actually smiled, and if that doesn't do something to my chest then I don't know what else to call it.The moment Celeste mindlinked me that she was done eating, I needed to check on her. Kael was more than excited at the idea of seeing her one more time, practically vibrating at the back of my skull like an overgrown puppy I'd never admit to owning. And now that we're done, I feel at ease, even though Kael is furious we're leaving her room and not planting ourselves outside her door for the rest of the night. It's for the better. She needs space, she needs rest, and once she's recovered we'll have time. I assure him as I walk down the hallway toward my room.Today has been long. So fucking long, and Warren has played a huge part in fueling my anger. I need rest, and I need my lawyer to follow up with Warren first thing tomorrow morning, which is a reminder that the contract he signed isn't going to bail on him as easy as he thinks.I push open the door to my
