I’m 23 and I’m tired of being called “the spare.”

The house is quiet in a way that means my father is home.

No staff talking. No music. No clink of glasses from the bar.

Just the tick of the grandfather clock in the hall. Counting.

It’s 11pm. He’s in his study. Door open.

I can smell the whiskey from the hallway.

And paper. Old files.
