ISABELLA GARCIA

Fifteen hours, forty minutes, and ten seconds. That’s how long it’s been since I last held my baby’s hands.

I was out for barely an hour, and Ethan…he never came back. That was it.

The doctors said it was fast, and I want that to be my focus. I want to be grateful that he didn’t suffer.

I’m his mother. How can I make this anything less than sad? How can I find a silver lining when my world is gone?

Enzo was always at home. When he wasn’t in the main house, he was in the smaller quarters or out on the balcony.

The furthest he ever went was the mall at the end of our street. It was a five-minute drive, and he’d come back full of questions.

How are you? What do you want for dinner? Can I do anything to help? Talk to me. Please. Isabella, are you there?

I shook my head just thinking about it. Anger rose in the back of my throat.

I was angry. I had been angry since it happened.

It wasn’t the kind of anger that made you want to smash things. It was heavier, colder.

I hated

MARCO MARTINS “Let’s go, baby,” I said to Cleo, resting my hand on the small of her back. Cleo turned to Isa. “Are you sure you don’t want me to stay with you?” she asked. The thing was, Isa hadn’t said a single word about her son’s death and it had been hours. Isa turned around, her hands tucked deep into the sleeves of her kitten cardigan. With every passing second, she seemed to shrink further into herself. It was hard to watch, even for someone who didn’t like her. Isa shook her head, waved at Cleo, and we started toward the car. “Babe,” I called, but Cleo’s eyes stayed fixed on the back of Isa’s head even as I led her away. “If you guys had gotten here on time, you would have saved him,” Cleo told me. Her voice was low and sharp. She turned and glared at me as she freed herself from my grasp. “Where did you keep your phone, babe?” she asked with a smile that made me swallow hard. She “We were in a meeting,” I said, frustration slipping into my voice. “I’ve

ENZO MORETTIMarco wanted to sit beside Cleo. I moved to the side, and he slid in between us. Cleo had been quiet, but as soon as Marco came over, she turned to him. “Where did you keep your phone?” she asked. Then she turned to me, adding, “Where do the two of you keep your phones? Isn’t it supposed to be your phone for a reason?” “Cleo, you’re stressed,” Marco said, trying to hold her, but she pulled away from his grip. “And you’re both not stressed enough,” she shot back, spitting the words out. She held her head in her hands. “How did this happen?” Just then, the doctor walked out, stealing everyone’s attention. We all turned to her at once, desperate for news. “We’ve finished doing a full exam on her,” the doctor said in a professional, detached tone. “She needs to rest for a few hours before she’s back on her feet.” “Can we see her?” I asked. “Absolutely.” “And the little boy? How’s he?” I added. I caught a flicker of detachment in the doctor’s face, and something els

CLEO GARCIA Enzo burst through the hospital’s glass doors, his face a mix of panic and fury. “Where are they? What’s going on?” he demanded, firing questions at me before I could even catch my breath. Marco trailed behind him, looking tense but composed, following Enzo’s lead as they rushed into the chaotic scene. Both of them looked clean and fresh, untouched by the dirt, blood, and grime that clung to Maria and me. We’d been there when the explosion happened, caught in the aftermath, but we hadn’t arrived in time to stop it. Marco and Enzo weren’t even at the scene when it all went down. “They’re still inside with the doctors. We don’t know anything yet,” I told Enzo, my voice shaky from worry. “Arash was there, he helped get them—” Enzo cut me off, his eyes blazing. “Arash is one of their doctors? Keep that man away from my family!” he roared, his voice echoing in the hallway. Before I could stop him, he stormed through the door leading to Isa’s room, his anger driving his e

CLEO GARCIA The explosion was intense, reducing the car to a twisted, charred heap of metal in seconds. Everything nearby was thrown back by the force, including Isa and Ethan, who were caught in the blast’s violent push. Isa landed a few feet away from me, crumpled on the ground in a heap. I sprinted to her side, my heart racing, with Maria close behind me, her steps echoing my urgency. Isa stirred, letting out a soft groan of pain. She’d landed on her side, her hands instinctively clutching her head for protection. Her right elbow was badly bruised, and a thin stream of blood trickled from her hairline, running down her cheek and dripping onto the rough asphalt. I gently touched her face, my fingers trembling as she struggled to open her eyes, her expression dazed and pained. “Ethan!” I shouted, my voice cracking as I scanned the chaotic scene, my eyes darting frantically to find him. I turned to Maria, who was right behind me, her face pale but focused. “He’s a seve

ISABELLA GARCIA When I arrived back at the hospital, Ethan was ready, sitting on the edge of his bed. “Enzo didn’t come,” Ethan said softly, his eyes scanning the door behind me, hoping to see someone else walk in. His shoulders slumped as he sighed in defeat. “Why didn’t he come?” Ethan asked, his voice small and disappointed. I let out a sigh, not out of frustration but from the guilt draining me. Ethan deserved so much better, and I felt awful for not making his simple request to see Enzo happen. I should’ve done more to make it right for him. Then, an idea sparked in my mind. “Enzo couldn’t make it, but he sent a special ride just for you,” I told Ethan, trying to lift his spirits. I cringed inside, knowing I’d taken Enzo’s car without his permission and was now spinning a lie to Ethan about it to keep him hopeful. “Like a car?” Ethan asked, his eyes widening with a flicker of excitement. “Yeah,” I said, forcing a smile. “He said it’s the car he’ll use to take you out
