ARIEL

I stood at the edge of the underground club, clutching the envelope in my hand so tightly it crinkled. I hated this place. The smell of sweat, alcohol, and something darker coated the air like oil. I could feel it sticking to my skin, making my breath shallow. The money inside wasn’t enough. I knew it wasn’t enough. But it was all I had.

The bouncer at the back door eyed me like I was something he’d scraped off his shoe.

“You sure you wanna go in there, sweetheart?”

“I’m sure,” I lied.

He shrugged and stepped aside, and the bass of the music hit me like a punch to the chest. The underground club was packed, bodies grinding under neon lights, the air thick with the scent of arousal and alcohol. I swallowed hard and pushed through the crowd, heading straight for the VIP section.

"You're late," the bouncer at the door growled, eyeing me from head to toe.

"I'm here to see Maddox. Tell him Ariel has his money."

The bouncer smirked, but he opened the door anyway.

The back room was dimly lit, and the air was worse in here. My stomach turned when I saw him, Maddox, leaning against a desk, shirt half unbuttoned, a cigar between his fingers.

"Look who finally showed up," he said, his voice oily.

I held out the envelope. "It's not the full amount, but it’s close. I swear I’ll get the rest soon. There's just eleven thousand dollars left."

Maddox took the envelope and opened it, flipping through the bills.

"This is a joke," he muttered. Then louder, "You think this is enough? Do I look like a charity to you, sweetheart?"

I backed up as he stepped toward me. "I just need more time. Please...."

"You’re already out of time."

He grabbed my arm, hard. I gasped, struggling to pull free, but his grip only tightened.

"You think you can come in here with crumbs and expect me to smile? You owe me. And you’re gonna pay." He shoved me against the wall.

"Let me go!" I screamed, trying to hit him.

He just laughed and pointed toward the open door behind him. I saw the stage then, naked women dancing while drunk men howled and threw money.

"You see them? That’s where you’re going next. You’ll work off every damn penny you owe me. On your back or your knees, I don’t care."

"No!" I yelled, but it didn’t matter.

Two of his men grabbed me. I kicked and screamed, biting one of them, but they didn’t even flinch. They dragged me through another hallway and threw me into a room.

The door slammed shut behind me.

I sat up, coughing, only to realise I wasn’t alone. The room was full of women, some crying, some quiet, all dressed in revealing clothes. One of them, a tall brunette with kind eyes, knelt beside me.

One of them, a redhead with tired eyes, sighed when she saw me. “New girl?”

“I’m not! I’m not staying here,” I spat, scrambling to my feet.

The women exchanged glances before the brunette shook her head. “Honey, if you owe Maddox, you’re staying.”

“I’ll pay him back..."

“Not with money, you won’t.”

The reality of her words hit me like a slap. I backed into the wall, my breath coming too fast. This wasn’t happening. This couldn’t be happening.

I should’ve been smarter. Should’ve never listened to my Mika who told me to borrow from him in the first place. But I needed the money. Badly.

"I’m not staying," I said quickly. "I’m not like you. I’m not..."

"We all said that once," another woman muttered, brushing glitter off her chest.

"I just owe Maddox some money. I didn’t think he'd..."

"You came in person," the brunette said. "That was your first mistake."

Tears welled in my eyes. I felt sick. "My coworker said he helped people. Said I just had to be quick about paying it back..."

"Your coworker’s either a liar or a fool," the brunette replied. "Maddox never lets people go. Not unless he gets something out of it. If you can’t pay in cash, he takes your body."

"No," I whispered. "I won’t do it."

"Sweetie you won’t have a choice," the brunette said. "Brace yourself. It only gets worse from here."

They handed me a tiny outfit: fishnets, a leather bra, and high heels. My hands shook as I put it on. I couldn’t believe this was happening. I wanted to scream, to run, to turn back time. I felt like the biggest idiot alive. Why had I come here? Why hadn’t I just disappeared?

I stared at my reflection in the broken mirror. I didn’t look like me anymore.

The women were kind, in their own way. They tried to prepare me for what was coming, for what the men would do to me. The redhead, Lena, smudged dark liner under my eyes.

“Fight too much, and Maddox will make it worse. There are places he will hurt you where the bruises will never show,” she warned.

I didn’t answer. My hands were shaking.

When the door opened again, one of Maddox's men barked at us to line up. My heart pounded as we were herded toward the main floor. The music was louder now, the crowd wilder.

I couldn’t do this.

I wouldn’t.

The second the guard’s grip loosened, I bolted.

I didn’t think. Just ran, past the dancers, past the drunk men, straight for the back exit. I was so close.

Then I slammed into a wall of muscle.

A hand fisted in my hair, yanking me back. I gasped, pain shooting through my scalp, and looked up...

Into the coldest gray eyes I’d ever seen.

The man holding me wasn’t just tall. He was massive. Broad shoulders, a face carved from stone, and a presence that made the air around him crackle with danger.

His nostrils flared.

And then his grip tightened.

“You,” he growled.

I didn’t have time to react before he dragged me into a shadowed alcove, his body caging me in. His scent hit me first, dark, wild, like a storm and something entirely different.

He was an Alpha.

His skin should’ve burned for just touching me.

But it didn’t.

His fingers wrapped around my throat, cutting off my air. “I can smell who you are, you're supposed to be dead.”

I clawed at his wrist, panic flooding my veins.

Then....

A shudder ripped through him. His pupils dilated, his breath coming faster.

And I felt it.

The bond.

His snarl was pure fury. “No.”

But his hand on my throat loosened. Just slightly.

Enough for me to rasp, “Who the fuck are you?”

His lips curled back, revealing sharp canines.

“Kazimir Rossi"

Rossi?! From the Rossi family?!

And just like that...

I knew I was fucked.

ARIEL The morning light was gray and cold, filtering through the curtains like a judgment.I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying everything that had happened in the forest. The moss beneath my back. The moon above us. His hands on my skin. His breath in my ear. The way he'd looked at me after like I was the only thing in the world. I pressed my palms against my eyes and groaned. What have you done?I'd spent ten years running from men like him. Ten years building walls, protecting myself, surviving. And in one night, one stupid, moon, drunk night, I'd thrown it all away. Again. I hated him. I hated that I wanted him. I hated that I couldn't stop thinking about the way his body felt against mine. I hated that when it came to Kazimir I was senseless and stupid. And I hated myself for letting it happen again.I heard movement in the hallway. Voices. The pack was stirring, people preparing to leave the pack estate. I needed to get up. Needed to pack. Needed to face the day.

KAZIMIR The full moon hung low and heavy over the pack house, bloated and golden, like a wound in the sky.I stood at the edge of the forest, watching the wolves prepare for the hunt. The pack was restless tonight, the full moon always did this. It stirred something primal in us, something hungry and wild. We needed to run. We needed to hunt. The needed to shed the skin of civilization and remember what it meant to be wolf.I could feel it too. The pull of the moon in my blood, the ache in my bones, the way my wolf was pressing against my skin, demanding to be let out. Every full moon was like this, a battle between the man and the beast. Some nights, I won. Tonight, I wasn't so sure.Because Ariel was here. And her scent was everywhere. The hunt was announced with a horn, low, ancient, echoing through the valley. Wolves gathered at the edge of the forest, their eyes gleaming in the torchlight. Some were already shifting, their bodies contorting, their bones cracking, their forms tra

KAZIMIR "Of course." She smiled. "What about?" "You need to tone it down." Her smile flickered. "Excuse me?" "All of it. The touching. The laughing. The acting like you're already my Luna." I stepped closer, my voice low. "I'm playing along for the council's sake. But I'm not your mate. And I'm not going to pretend to be." She stared at me. "You don't mean that." "I mean every word." "The council..." "The council doesn't control me. I control the council." I leaned closer. "I'm the Alpha. And I could cancel our arrangement at any time. Remember that." Her face went pale. Then her mask slipped back into place. "Of course, Kazimir. I understand." "Do you?" "Perfectly." She walked away. I watched her go. -——————— I tried to find Ariel. The pack house was sprawling with people who had arrived for the celebration. I didn't know what room Ariel or Evie would be but I doubted she'd be in my own room. I searched everywhere. I finally found her in Evie's room.

ARIEL I knew what he was asking. Not just about the summit, about what we'd done. What we'd shared. I could see flashbacks in my head. "I'm not ready," I said. "Besides, what's there to talk about? I already told you, it won't happen again." He nodded slowly. "I'm not asking you to talk about it now. We can talk about it later. And yes, it will happen again."I opened my mouth, but promptly closed it. I had no response to what he said. He smirked, he looked like he was gloating. "I have to check the perimeter," he said. "Do you want to come?"Being alone with Kazimir? I didn't think so. I shook my head. "I have to take a shower." Back at my room, Evie was making a list.It was on a piece of paper that was covered in her messy handwriting, crayon scribbles that were supposed to be words. She'd listed everything she needed for school: backpack, pencils, water bottle, snack, friend.I looked at the last one."Friend?""Uh-huh. I'm going to make a friend. On the first day." She nodd

ARIELI woke up without Kazimir on my bed. The sheets were cold on the other side. The pillow still held the faint imprint of his head, but the warmth was gone, replaced by the chill of morning. I reached out, my fingers brushing the fabric, and felt the absence like a physical ache.I shouldn't have missed him. I'd spent ten years sleeping alone, running alone, surviving alone. I didn't need a man’s warmth. I didn't want it.But I did.I wanted his.I lay there for a moment, staring at the ceiling, remembering the way he'd held me at the summit. The way his arms had wrapped around me, the way his breath had been warm on my hair, the way I'd slept through the night without a single nightmare. Then I pushed myself up, swung my legs over the side of the bed, and forced myself to move.Evie was still asleep when I checked on her. She was curled around her stuffed rabbit, the gray stone from Nikolai on her nightstand, her face peaceful in the soft glow of the crescent moon nightlight. I

ARIEL ARIEL The estate came into view like a promise.I pressed my forehead against the car window, watching the familiar stone walls rise out of the darkness. The windows were lit with warm golden light. Smoke curled from the chimneys. Somewhere inside, Evie was waiting for me.I hadn't let myself think about her during the drive. Hadn't let myself imagine what it would be like to hold her again, to hear her voice, to feel her small arms around my neck. I couldn't. It was all too much to think about. But now we were here. And she was inside. The car had barely stopped before I was out of the door.I heard her before I saw her, that small, delighted shriek that always made my heart ache. Then she was running across the foyer, her hair flying behind her, her arms outstretched."Mama!"I dropped to my knees. She crashed into me, her small body colliding with mine, her arms wrapping around my neck. I held her so tight I was probably hurting her, but I couldn't let go."Baby. My baby."

ARIEL I didn't respond. She held out her coat and shoved it towards me. "Be a dear." The coat dangled between us. Cream wool. Expensive. Waiting for me to take it. I looked at it. Looked at her. Looked at the coat again. Then I let it drop to the floor. "I'm not a staff," I said. Her

ARIEL Not the kind of bloodied that came from a paper cut or a shaving nick. This was dark, this wasn't his own blood. It was the kind of blood one got when they fought with someone else. My heart lurched as I wondered if he was hurt. He heard me. Stopped. Turned. His face was pale. His

KAZIMIR The message from Alexei came at dawn. Meeting arranged. Friday. 8 PM. Warehouse district. He thinks it's a job. - Alexei I read it twice, then set my phone down and stared at the ceiling. Friday. Viktor Petrov, in a warehouse, thinking he was walking into a payday. He didn't know it

ARIEL The drive back was silent. Not the comfortable kind of silent, it was the kind of silence that choked you. I stared out the window, watching the trees blur past, the pink diamond necklace still warm in its box on my lap. He'd bought me diamonds. Real Diamonds. As if that could undo wha
