Chapter 06-Adrian

Evelyn Hartwell was pressed against me, her breath slowing, those hazel eyes snapping up to mine. I didn’t let go. Not right away. Again.

God, she was devastating up close. Her lashes trembled, her lips parted slightly, gloss shining under the dim light. She looked like royalty wrapped in silk, but the heat radiating off her skin pulled me somewhere darker, somewhere far from polished elegance.

She has no idea what she does to me.

I let go slowly, dragging my fingers against hers just enough to feel her warmth before stepping back. She smoothed her gown without meeting my eyes, pretending she wasn’t shaken. Pretending I hadn’t just disturbed her.

Good. Let her pretend. I like That.

“Apologies.” I said, voice low, the edge of amusement slipping through. “Paris has a strange way of throwing us together, doesn't it?”

She cleared her throat, clutching her phone like it was armor. “I—I should call for help.”

“Already done.” I slid my phone from my pocket, tilting the screen so she could see. The message thread to Julian, my PA, was already sent with orders to drag maintenance out of bed if he had to.

We wouldn’t be stuck long. But long enough.

The elevator hummed faintly, lights blinking red. Evelyn leaned against the mirrored wall, sighing heavily, shoulders tight, her breathing uneven.

I moved to the opposite side, giving her distance, but I didn’t stop watching. My gaze lingered, delibertae. She felt it, I saw the shiver when she tucked her hair back, the sweep of her fingers exposing her neck.

I could have her here. Pinned against this wall, whispering my name until it broke in her throat. Adrian—fuck.

I smothered the thought with a chuckle. “You don’t like small spaces?”

Her eyes flashed. “I don’t like… this.”

“This?” I played dumb.

Her chin lifted. “You.”

The word hit like a blow and a gift all at once.

I laughed, unbothered. “Then it’s mutual.”

Her brows pulled tight. “Mutual?” Confused.

Oh, cute rabbit.

“Yes.” I leaned back on the railing, eyes roaming her body with no apology. “You throw me off balance, Evelyn. I don’t like being thrown off balance.”

She opened her mouth, but nothing came. The pulse hammering at her throat betrayed her more than words could.

The air thickened.

I pushed off the railing, closing the space slow, unhurried, a predator’s pace. She didn’t move, though her back pressed harder into the mirrored glass as I neared.

Close enough to feel her breath warm against my jaw.

“Tell me,” I murmured, lowering my voice, “what exactly did Paul say about me before you came?”

Her eyes widened. “I—he—”

“Let me guess.” My mouth brushed the air beside her ear. “Don’t trust me? Said I was a liar? A pretender?”

She flinched, guilt flickering across her face.

So he did.

I leaned even closer, not touching, my words brushing her skin. “He’s not wrong about me. But he’s not entirely right either.”

Her breath hitched, shaky, pulling me deeper in.

Then the elevator groaned, a harsh clank echoing from above. She startled. Instinct drove me forward, one hand braced beside her head, my body caging hers.

She stiffened, then melted back against the glass.

“You should step back,” she whispered.

“Should…” I repeated, almost laughing. “But do you want me to?” I asked her while holding her gaze.

Her eyes gave the answer her lips refused.

Fuck. This woman.

My gaze dipped to her mouth— looking soft, parted just enough. I could taste her if I wanted. I could ruin her in a single kiss. Make her forget Paul ever existed.

My jaw locked, heat burning low in my gut as I tilted even closer, my lips almost brushing hers without closing the distance.

Her eyes fluttered shut.

The elevator jolted, lights flickering, gears grinding back to life.

I froze, I was definitely a breath away from rewriting everything.

Her lashes lifted, confusion and hunger swirling in her stare.

I let the moment stretch, savoring it, before pulling back with a smile that promised trouble.

I bent close, my mouth grazing her ear. “Not yet,” I whispered.

The doors slid open with a cheerful ding.

I straightened, smoothing my shirt, every trace of control snapping back into place. She stood frozen, chest heaving, clutching her phone like a lifeline.

I gestured to the open doors. “After you.”

She swept past me, the silk of her gown brushing my leg. She didn’t look back, but her silence screamed louder than words.

I waited a beat, then followed.

Because now I knew, she wanted me.

And whether it was desire, rebellion, or just weakness, I didn’t give a damn!

That woman was temptation wrapped in silk. And I’d never been the kind of man who gave in to temptation.

Not this one.

Chapter 41-AdrianThree days later, I made a decision I couldn’t take back or proceed with. The house was quiet when I woke up. Too quiet. The kind that made thoughts louder than they should be. Evelyn was still asleep upstairs, and I didn’t go to her room. I hadn’t in two nights. Not because I didn’t want to—but because I needed space to think clearly. And clarity had become a dangerous thing.I stood by the window downstairs, phone in my hand, staring at a message I’d already memorized. She’s the key.We move when you say so.I exhaled slowly, thumb hovering over the screen. That message was the reason I had brought her here in the first place. The reason I had insisted on my uncle’s house. The reason I hadn’t let her go home. Not even the unplanned reveal of the affair between Paul and Clara.This.It had started weeks ago—long before Evelyn ever looked at me the way she did now, though still fused with hate. Long before she slept in my arms without knowing why she felt safe there

Chapter 40-EvelynThe next day dragged itself in quietly, like it didn’t want to be noticed.I was curled up on the couch with my legs tucked under me, phone in my hand, thumb scrolling without purpose. I wasn’t reading anything. I was just… moving. Anything to keep my mind from settling too long on one thought.Missed calls still filled my screen. Paul. Clara. Paul again. Clara again. My mother.I skipped over them all. Then I saw it. A voice note. From Clara. My thumb hovered over it. My chest tightened instantly, like my body already knew this was a bad idea. I locked my phone and dropped it beside me, staring at the wall.Don’t listen, a part of me said. Another part wanted to know what it was. Maybe this is something else.I unlocked the phone again.I pressed play.“Evelyn… hey,” Clara’s voice filled my ears, soft and worried. Too soft. Too worried. “I’ve been calling you nonstop, and you’re not answering, and I’m really scared right now. Please, wherever you are, just let me kn

  • Claimed by His Stepbrother    Chapter 39

Chapter 39-EvelynI woke up before the light fully crept in. My body had sunk into the mattress and decided it didn't want to come back up.For a moment, I stayed still, unsure of where I was or why my body felt so heavy. Then I felt warmth behind me. A steady rise and fall against my back. An arm around my waist, firm but careful, like it was afraid of holding me too tightly. Adrian. My throat tightened.I turned my head slightly, careful not to wake him, and studied his face. He looked different when he slept. Softer. Younger, even. His brows weren’t furrowed like they usually were, his jaw unclenched, lashes resting against his cheeks.Peaceful.That word felt wrong on him, but it was the first thing that came to mind.I hated that I noticed it. Hated even more that my body felt safe there, curled against his chest like it belonged. Like it had chosen him without asking me first. What was I even doing? I quickly took my gaze to the ceiling. I didn't know if I wanted to wake him up

  • Claimed by His Stepbrother    Chapter 38

Chapter 38-AdrianEvelyn didn't yell. She didn't throw anything or curse, she just walked out. That was worse.I watched her from the kitchen doorway as she crossed the hall, shoulders caving in on themselves like she was trying to disappear. Her hands shook at her sides. She kept her head down, lips pressed tight, like if she opened her mouth she'd fall apart. Her faint steps left a dull ache in my chest.I was starting to feel guilty, but I didn’t want her to keep living in the lies comfortably. She deserved better.Paul let out a long breath, rubbing his face. “That didn’t need to happen like that.”I turned slowly.“Oh?” I said. “How did you want it to happen?”He looked tired. Worn. Guilty. But not broken enough for my liking.“You blindsided her,” he snapped. “You humiliated me in front of my own wife.”I laughed, short and cold. “You humiliated yourself the moment you slept with her best friend.”Should he even be concerned about being humiliated? At this time? Idiot. His jaw

  • Claimed by His Stepbrother    Chapter 37

Chapter 37-EvelynI was still waiting for one of them to speak, but all I got were exchange of glares. I knew I was about to scream if I still did not get any responses.I stood there, my fingers curled tightly into my palms, staring between the two men like I was watching a scene unfold that I hadn’t auditioned for. My heart was racing, but my mind felt strangely clear.“Explain,” I said. “Now.”Paul looked at me like I was something fragile he was afraid to touch. “Mi Amor—”“No,” I cut in. “I want you to go straight to the point.”I knew what was coming next was probably something to sugar-coat me to forget whatever this was.Adrian didn’t move. He stayed by the doorway, arms crossed, his presence heavy but restrained, like he was holding himself back on purpose.“Whatever you think this is,” Paul continued, “it’s not—”“Then say it,” I interrupted. “Say what it is.”Paul hesitated.Adrian’s voice cut in again, calm and low. “You should tell her.”Paul shot him a glare. “This has n

  • Claimed by His Stepbrother    Chapter 36

Chapter 36-EvelynStillness washed over me. Not the comforting type, or the dramatic kind where your knees buckle or your breath disappears. My body just… stopped. Like it needed a moment to understand what it was seeing before reacting.Paul stood there. Not a shadow. Not a hallucination. Not my imagination finally breaking after weeks of fear and unanswered questions. He stood on Adrian’s uncle’s porch like he belonged there. Like disappearing for two weeks hadn’t shattered my sense of normal. He looked different.Thinner. Rougher. There was a faint cut near his brow and shadows under his eyes that hadn’t been there before. His clothes looked worn, like he’d slept in them too many nights in a row. He looked like someone who had been through something he wasn’t ready to explain. But he was alive. And that alone should have sent me running.“Evelyn?” he said softly.Hearing my name from his mouth felt strange. Familiar, yet distant. Like a voice I used to answer automatically but now
