IRIS POV:

Sarah was in the sitting room with her legs tucked under her on the sofa, her phone in her hand. She looked up the moment she heard the door.

Her face did something I had never seen it do before.

It went completely blank.

The way a face goes when it is trying to process two things at the same time and cannot decide which one to land on.

“Sarah,” I said.

She stood up slowly.

Her eyes moved from my face to my forehead. To the dried blood. To my clothes. Back to my face.

“I don't underst

IRIS POV:We were still upstairs going through my wardrobe when I heard the front door open downstairs. My mother's voice called out from the hallway."Iris? Sarah's car is outside, are you both home?""Upstairs, Mum," I called back. Her footsteps came up the stairs, and she appeared at the bedroom door, still in her work clothes, bag on her shoulder, looking between me and Sarah and the dresses spread across the bed."What's happening?" she asked.I picked up the second envelope from the bedside table and held it out to her.She looked at it, then at me, then took it and opened it.I watched her face as she read it.She finished, folded the card carefully, and put it back in the envelope."Well," she said quietly. "At least I know what to wear tomorrow." She set her bag down on the chair. "I am a certified nurse assistant. If Diane Castellan wants me standing beside her all day, that's her business. I've handled more difficult people in a hospital ward before breakfast.""Mum…""I'm

IRIS POV:I got home, dropped my jacket on the chair, and sat on the sofa.Diane's voice was still in my head. That laugh. The way she had looked at my jacket and the café behind me like they confirmed everything she already thought about me.Bring him if he's real.I picked up my phone.I found Aurelian's number and pressed call.It rang once. Then nothing. Not voicemail. Not a busy tone. Just nothing, like the call had gone somewhere and dissolved.I frowned and tried again.Same thing.I pulled the phone from my ear and looked at it. The number was there exactly as I had saved it, the strange-lettered one he had told me to save that first night.I tried a third time.Nothing.My heart did something uncomfortable in my chest. I put the phone down on the cushion and looked at the ceiling. He had driven away last night without a word. His number was now unreachable. And tomorrow I had to walk into a room full of people who had watched me fall apart at an altar and somehow hold my head

IRIS POV:I stayed in the sitting room for a while after turning off the television, just standing there with the blank screen and the quiet of the house around me.Then I grabbed my jacket from the hook by the door and went outside.I didn't have a destination. I just needed air and movement. The morning was cool, and the streets were busy enough that I could walk without thinking too hard, people moving around me in every direction, nobody paying attention to anyone else, which was exactly what I needed.I walked for about twenty minutes before I stopped at a small café on the corner of a street I used to walk down every day before everything fell apart when I left Nicholas. I went in, ordered a coffee, found a seat by the window, and just sat."Iris," a voice came from behind me. It was an elderly lady's voice, and I turned to see.She was holding a coffee cup and looking at me with an expression that wasn't friendly at all, and I didn't care."Yes," I said, frowning. She looked at

IRIS POV:My eyes opened and my sight was still blurry, but something felt different. As my sight cleared, I noticed I was in Aurelian's apartment.I didn't know how I got there, but I was there, lying on the bed. I stood up immediately, standing in the middle of the room.Looking around, everything was exactly the same. The high ceilings, the dark wood, the city visible through the floor-to-ceiling glass.I felt something was wrong. But then a sound came from down the hallway.I walked out of the room slowly and down the hallway, following the sound. It came out of another room, and the bedroom door was slightly open.I pushed it.And to my greatest surprise, Aurelian was there. His back was to me, his hands on someone's waist, his lips at her neck, and the person in his arms had dark hair, and neither of them wore clothes. My stomach dropped."Aurelian," I said.He didn't hear me."Aurelian," I shouted.Nothing.The woman in his arms turned her head slowly. And looked at me. It was

IRIS POV:I walked down the porch steps slowly.Fiona watched me come toward her with an expression I recognized because I had seen it in my own mirror. My face. But the way she was wearing it was nothing like me.She looked almost amused."What is this?" she said.I stopped a few feet from her.She was looking at me the way you looked at something that shouldn't exist. Like the problem wasn't that she was standing in front of me. The problem was that I was standing in front of her.Aurelian was between us now, looking from her face to mine and back again with the expression of a man whose entire sense of certainty had just been pulled out from under him.Sarah appeared at the door behind me."Aurelian," she said from the porch. "Iris and I were upstairs together when she called you. We have been in this house for hours."Aurelian looked at Sarah. Then he looked at the woman beside him. Then at me."He came and found me outside," Fiona said simply, nodding toward Aurelian. "Waiting by

IRIS POV:Sarah came back ten minutes later with two mugs and set one in front of me without a word. She sat cross-legged on the bed and wrapped both hands around hers and looked at me."How long before he gets here?" she asked."He said he was coming," I said. "He didn't say when."Sarah looked at the window. The city outside was quiet now. Late enough that the traffic had thinned and the streets had settled into that kind of stillness that only came after midnight."It's been almost three hours since you called Aurelian," she said."I know."She sipped her tea.I sipped mine.We sat there for a moment."Sarah," I said."Mm.""I need to tell you something," I said. "In case."She looked at me."In case of what?""In case she comes back," I said. "In case you're not sure which one of us you're looking at."Sarah went still."She has my face," I said. "My voice. Everything. You sat with her for ten minutes tonight and didn't notice. And I'm not saying that to make you feel bad. I'm say
