LOGINChapter 4: The Golden Cage
My heart beat against my ribs like a trapped drum.
The heavy mahogany doors were shut tight, locking out the rest of the world and leaving me alone in the suffocatingly large office with Julian Vance. The silence in the room was almost heavy, broken only by the quiet hum of the air conditioning eighty floors above the city.
Julian didn't rush toward me. He moved with the slow, deliberate confidence of a man who already knew he had won. Every step he took across the marble floor was measured, his silver eyes locked onto mine without flinching.
"You handled yourself well," he said smoothly, stopping just a foot away. The subtle scent of sandalwood and warm cedar drifted off him, wrapping around my senses like a spell. "Most people tremble when Marcus throws a tantrum."
"Marcus is a boy playing with his father’s money," I replied, forcing my voice to stay even, though my hands were cold. "You’re the one running the kingdom."
A faint, slow smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "And now you’re stepping into that kingdom beside me."
He reached out, his long fingers catching my chin. His touch was warm—hot, even—against my chilled skin. He tilted my head back, forcing me to meet his gaze directly. The intensity in those silver-gray eyes was intoxicating, a dangerous mix of absolute authority and a deep, simmering hunger that made my knees feel traitorously weak.
"Let’s get one thing clear, Elena," he murmured, his thumb lightly stroking the sharp edge of my jawline. "This isn't just a paper contract to save your father's business. In front of the press, the board, and my family, you belong to me. When I hold your hand, you don't pull away. When I look at you, you look at me like I'm the only man in the room. Understand?"
"And behind closed doors?" I asked, my voice barely above a breath, though I refused to break eye contact.
Julian leaned down, his lips brushing the sensitive curve of my ear. A sharp, involuntary shiver ran down my spine.
"Behind closed doors," he whispered, his deep baritone vibrating through my skin, "we renegotiate."
Before I could answer, he pulled back and walked over to his desk, picking up a small velvet box that had been resting beside his laptop. He flipped the latch open with a soft click.
Inside sat an absolute monster of a diamond—an emerald-cut stone surrounded by platinum, flawless and blinding as it caught the morning light filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows. It was larger, colder, and infinitely more impressive than the vintage ring Marcus had planned to give me.
"Give me your hand," Julian commanded quietly.
I hesitated for a fraction of a second, then extended my left hand.
He didn't just slide the ring on; he took my hand gently, holding it in his large, warm palm. The contrast between his calloused fingers and my delicate skin made my pulse quicken. He slid the ring onto my ring finger. It fit perfectly, heavy and cool against my skin—a stunning, glittering mark of ownership.
"Consider Marcus's memory officially erased," Julian said softly, lifting my hand to his lips. He pressed a slow, lingering kiss to the back of my knuckles, his eyes staying locked on mine over the top of my fingers. The heat from his mouth burned straight down to my toes.
"What happens now?" I asked, trying to ignore the chaotic flutter in my stomach.
"Now, we prepare for the Vance Gala this weekend," he said, releasing my hand, though his eyes never left my face. "My entire family will be there. The board will be there. The press will be watching every move we make. Marcus will be watching."
"He’s going to try to ruin this," I warned. "He’s bitter, Julian. He’s going to tell everyone I’m doing this out of spite."
"Let him," Julian replied, a dark, dangerous spark lighting up his eyes. "Spite is a powerful emotion. But passion looks identical to the outside world. If they think we’re so obsessed with each other that we couldn't wait, let them talk. It only makes my control over the board tighter."
He stepped toward his desk and hit a button on the intercom. "Sophia, bring in the stylist team."
Within minutes, the heavy doors opened again, but this time it wasn't a panicked Marcus. A team of three impeccably dressed women and a tall man carrying garment bags walked in, pushing racks of high-fashion evening gowns behind them.
"Mr. Vance," the lead stylist said with a crisp bow. "We brought the private collection as requested."
"Select the best for my fiancée," Julian instructed, stepping back to let them work, though his gaze remained glued to me. "She needs something for the gala. Crimson or dark emerald. Something that makes every man in the room regret looking at her, and makes them realize she’s completely off-limits."
The head stylist gasped softly, looking at the massive ring on my finger, then at me with newfound respect. "Right away, sir."
For the next hour, I was whisked into the adjoining private suite in the executive office. Dresses of silk, velvet, and satin were held up against me, tailored pins flying as the team worked silently under the watchful eye of Julian, who sat on a leather sofa near the doorway, sipping a dark espresso.
He didn't say much, but every time I stepped out in a new gown, his eyes would slowly travel from the hem of the dress up to my neck, measuring every curve, leaving a trail of heat in their wake without him ever touching me.
Finally, they pulled out a gown of deep crimson silk—backless, with a sweeping train and a thigh-high slit that revealed just enough to be dangerous.
"Try this one," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave as he stood up from the sofa.
I stepped behind the screen, slipping into the cold silk. It hugged my waist like a second skin, clinging to my hips before falling to the floor. The back was entirely open, exposed all the way down to the small of my spine.
When I stepped out, the room fell completely silent.
Julian walked over slowly, setting his cup down. The stylists instinctively backed away, giving him space. He stopped behind me, looking at my reflection in the full-length mirror.
His hand came up, resting lightly against my bare lower back. His touch was burning hot against the cool silk, his long fingers spreading wide over my skin. I held my breath, watching his expression in the mirror.
His silver eyes were dark, heavy with an intensity that made the room feel far too small.
"Perfect," he growled low in his throat, his chest lightly pressing against my exposed back. I could feel the solid, rigid warmth of his body through his suit. "You look like a sin, Elena."
"Is that what you want?" I whispered, looking at his reflection as his fingers traced a slow path up my spine, sending goosebumps rippling across my skin.
"I want everyone to know you're mine," he murmured, his lips hovering an inch from my shoulder. "And on Saturday night... we start our war."

I pressed the tip to the line marked Bride, my hand hesitating for half a second as the reality of what I was doing tried to catch up with me.Elena Lorden. With one swift motion, I signed my name. The moment the ink dried, Julian snatched the document away, his silver eyes flashing with a predatory triumph that made my stomach take a dangerous dip. He didn't even bother to blow on the wet signature before sliding the folder neatly into his executive desk drawer."Smart girl," he purred, his voice dripping with smooth satisfaction. "You just saved your family from ruin, Elena. And you’ve ensured Marcus will spend the rest of his life regretting the day he ever looked away from you.""When does the funding clear?" I asked, pulling my hands back and folding them tightly across my che
Chapter 2: The Wicked BargainThe air in the room instantly vanished. My heart slammed against my ribs so violently I was sure he could hear it. Julian Vance. The legendary, reclusive titan of the Vance empire. The man who made wall street bankers weep and brought multinational corporations to their knees. And the man whose silver-gray eyes had stared down into mine in the shadows of an underground bar while his hands mapped every inch of my bare skin."You're... Marcus’s uncle," I breathed, my voice barely a raspy whisper. Every instinct in my body screamed at me to step back, but my legs felt glued to the plush carpet.Julian didn't back away. If anything, he leaned closer, his warm, sandalwood-scented breath caressing the sensitive skin right beneath my ear."Fiancé’s uncle, Elena," he corrected smoothly, his deep baritone vibrating through my blood like a low frequency. "Or should I say ex-fiancé?"My eyes snapped to his. "You know?"Julian let out a quiet, dark laugh. He straight

Tonight was supposed to be the best night of my life. My father had just announced my engagement to Marcus Vance, heir to the Vance real estate fortune, and our families were downstairs sipping five-hundred-dollar bottles of wine to celebrate.I had slipped upstairs to grab the velvet box containing Marcus’s late mother’s ring—the ring he’d forgotten in the private suite.I turned the handle. The heavy oak door swung open without a sound."Faster, Marcus... God, if Elena sees us—""She won't," Marcus’s heavy, panting voice cut through the quiet air like a blade. "She’s downstairs acting like the perfect little doll. She doesn't have a reckless bone in her body, Chloe. Not like you."I froze. The glas
