AMARA

True to his words, Dante had wasted no time in getting us packed and ready for the trip. Most of it had been handled by his second in command, Cassian. I’d barely gotten a single word from the man, save for the grunt when he’d gestured for me to get into the jet.

Now I was about to enter a whole new domain.

A new life, some place different from where my father’s words were absolute. The more I tried to calm down, the harder it was to forget Philip’s unconscious body in my head.

“Amara,”

DANTEIt was too early that morning for my knuckles to already be split. The gym wall downstairs had taken the brunt of my anger, but it wasn't enough.I stood by the study window, turning Celeste’s recovered earring over in my palm. The sharp metal bit into my skin.It was a message from Kaz Vitale. A reminder that he had breached my estate, caused chaos, and walked out alive. My father always said a DeLaurentis never bled without making the world pay tenfold. Yet here I was, pacing my office, while the Vitale girl was recovering in my guest wing.“Be a good pawn too. Won’t want you getting killed before I’ve gotten enough use out of you.”Amara’s words from last night replayed in my mind. Even cornered, with her back against the wall and my body pinning her down, she hadn't flinched. She had stared right into my eyes, stripping away my leverage. I had been the one left staring at her lips.I tossed the earring onto the desk. It clattered against a stack of decrypted financial files.

AMARABelieving I’d get some semblance of peace after escaping my father had been a very stupid thought I let fester. One I was starting to rue.“Ouch.” The word slipped out of my lips when the doctor’s hand grazed the wound for the second time.He looked up at me and sent an apologetic smile. I waited till he was done wrapping it before letting out a breath I didn’t know I’d been holding.Subconsciously, my gaze wandered to Celeste. Her unconscious, slumbering face did little to the nerves that chipped away at me by the second. This shouldn’t have happened.Or rather, it was my fault that it had in the first place. I should have known better. I was the loose end in all this, and it had ended up costing all of us.“How long will she be asleep for?”The doctor chanced a glance at Celeste, then turned to his watch. “The effects of the medication should wear off by evening. You should be able to talk to her by then.”I nodded, turning my gaze back to Celeste. When she finally roused, the

DANTE“Kaz, no!”Amara’s scream was the catharsis to what happened next. Before anyone could move towards Kaz, the glass imploded, sending shards of shrapnel flying in any and every direction. For someone who had been wearing such a smug grin a moment ago, he was also caught in the crossfire, the impact of the explosion sending him flying across the room.“Fuck.” He let out a groan that sounded frighteningly close to death.I could barely see anything. Could barely remain aware of anything that wasn’t my own breathing. I coughed, my chest spasming painfully.“What’s going on?” Amara’s cry was the first thing that reached my ear.It sounded a bit to the left. Swatting as much of the dust as I could, I reached out to nothing, still gritting my teeth as I held on to a dwindling hope.A few seconds of touching nothing, but broken glass, and I somehow found her. She wrapped her hand around mine instinctively, nearly collapsing into my hold. Despite the vision in the room being near nil, I

AMARA“My sister.” Dante whispered. The mask of absolute control cracked, revealing a raw panic underneath. Something that felt too exposed for comfort.“Keys.” Dante commanded, holding his hand out to his underboss and friend.Cassian tossed the heavy keyring. Dante caught it, dropped to his knees in front of my chair, and seized my left wrist. His touch was burning hot against my cold skin.“You're hurting me.” I murmured.“You're alive.” Dante muttered, jamming the key into the lock. Click. The iron cuff sprang open. “Keep it that way.”He unlocked the other cuff in a fluid, desperate motion. I stood up, my legs shaking before I forced them to lock.“I told you I was innocent.” I said, rubbing the raw skin.“If you were guilty, you’d already be dead.” Dante countered, rising to his full, imposing height. He checked the Glock at his spine. “But you're not. There's a rat in my house, and they used my sister’s sanctuary to frame you.”“The secure wing is biometric.” Cassian said as we

AMARAThe chair was freezing. The heavy iron cuffs bit into my wrists with a brutal clack, locking my arms to the steel armrests. Cassian didn’t look at me as he secured the restraints. His jaw was set, his eyes fixed on the concrete wall of the holding cell."You know this is a mistake, Cassian." I said, my voice steady despite the frantic beating of my heart.Cassian checked the lock one last time. "Marcel Varco nearly put a bullet in the Boss’s skull at the downtown armory today. Your name is on the digital paper trail. My opinions don't matter."He turned on his heel, walked out, and slammed the heavy iron door. The lock engaged with a deafening thud.I was left in the buzzing silence of the dungeon, my mind spinning. Marcel Varco. An old acquaintance of Dante's father. A ghost. Varco had ambushed them downtown, and somehow, my phone was used to coordinate it.But how? I had been in the penthouse all morning. I hadn't spoken to anyone except Celeste. The heavy tumblers of the door

  • Claimed by My Rival   Chapter 17 Ghosts of the Past

AMARAThe stench of blood was the first thing that hit my nose. Then the sheer reality of his eyes. I’d grown up haunted by that nauseating scent, a ghost that always haunted the halls of the Vitale estate. But never had it been so heavy. This suffocating.Dante stood in the entryway, like a reaper who just climbed his way out of the deepest depths of hell. The blood painting his face and drenching his tailored shirt doesn’t seem to be his own. And that terrifies me more than anything. But his eyes still had me anchored to the floor. They’re devoid of whatever thin veneer of nonchalance and humanity he usually bothered to wear. And they were fixed on me.On the coat draped over my arm. On the fact that I was standing near the door, looking for all the world like a prisoner about to make her grand escape.I realized, terribly late, exactly what my mistake was.“Dante,” Celeste let out a breath. The vibrant, rebellious energy she had radiated before was nowhere to be found. “What happene

DANTEI’ve had a knack for being impulsive in the oddest moments. As a child, it didn’t matter if I had to jump into a pool just to get my lucky coin, or step onto the road in pursuit of my dog, ‘Lucky’. I’d leap before even giving it a thought. So, when Amara had dangled that dangerous proposal in

AMARA“This has to be a joke.”Except it wasn’t. When I’d been silent in the face of Dante’s question, he’d quietly started the car and started driving off. At first, I thought he was lying when he said he’d take us to one of his safehouses. I didn’t think he’d actually go through with it.Dante t

DANTEThere weren’t a lot of things that could piss me off. One thing I prided myself on, was the amount of self-control I always had, regardless of the situation.Which was why I didn’t understand the reason for that irritation that wouldn’t crawling underneath my skin.“What do you mean you let h

AMARA“What?”“Runaway with me.” He repeated, voice filled with a certainty that chilled me to the core.I bit my lip, letting the thought roll in my head over and over again. Run away with him? The idea sounded interesting, but it wasn’t so easy. My father’s web stretched to each and every part of
