DANTE

I’ve had a knack for being impulsive in the oddest moments. As a child, it didn’t matter if I had to jump into a pool just to get my lucky coin, or step onto the road in pursuit of my dog, ‘Lucky’. I’d leap before even giving it a thought.

So, when Amara had dangled that dangerous proposal in front of me, it all felt too good to be true. A fake proposal? How the hell would that solve anything? I’d have Viktor on my ass and for sure, her brothers definitely wouldn’t sit by idle.

But she was right about one thing. There was a lot to gain by agreeing to this relationship. For one, I could get all the info I need to ruin the Vitale family once and for all. Viktor was sure to have some dirt on him, something I could use against him.

And Amara would lead me to it.

She still seemed to be at a loss for words, eyes lingering on the ring on her finger.

“Oh, my goodness.”

“I can’t believe it.”

I turned to the onlookers, who were now taking pictures and gushing at us. Amara finally snapped back, suddenly aware of how many eyes were on us. She inched close, face barely an inch away from mine.

“You brought us to this place on purpose, didn’t you?”

My gaze dropped to her lips. “Everybody likes a good show.”

Her eyes seemed to burn with an indescribable fire. I knew she’d shoot me five times in the head if given the chance right there and then. But she couldn’t do anything. Not now. Not when she’d already agreed to something that would be her own undoing.

Of course, as soon as news of our engagement hit the news, the whole mafia world seemed to shake from the grenade.

I suggested we stay at my safehouse for the time being since Amara couldn’t go back home. Viktor surely wouldn’t take kindly to her after what happened at the airport. Especially with that friend she mentioned.

“He’s definitely dead.” I sighed, handing her back the phone.

For a second, I thought she might burst into tears. “You think I don’t know that?”

Without a word, she made her way back to the chair she’d been sitting on. All through the morning, she’d been focused on her phone, no doubt reading through all the reactions to our engagement.

I wasn’t moved by any of the bullshit congratulations. No. I was waiting. The Vitales had been silent for the past 24 hours. It was like a time bomb was slowly ticking.

My phone blared, the ringing breaking my thoughts for a second. It was Cassian. I muttered a curse before answering.

“Ciao.”

“Engaged?” He yelled. “You’re fucking engaged?”

“Pipe the fuck down. Need I remind you who you’re talking to.”

He sounded frustrated now. “It’s just—Where are you?”

“One of the safehouses. The one in Harlem.”

“Alright. I’ll be there soon.”

I ended the call and put the phone aside. No doubt I’d get an earful from him when he got there. It had all happened so suddenly that I’d barely sat down to think it through. But there was no turning back now. I just had to move forward with my plan.

Amara turned to me, eyes narrowed suspiciously. “Who di—”

The sound of commotion broke her off. We both exchanged glances for a second. I quickly made my way out of the house, moving straight towards the gate.

Of course, it was none other than Viktor himself. He was trying to push his way through some of my guards. And he looked pissed. As soon as his eyes landed on me, his anger seemed to multiply ten-fold.

“You fucking bastard.” He growled. “I’m going to boil your insides.”

“How hurtful. Is that how to speak to your future son-in-law?”

He was livid now. His gaze flickered to Amara and he seemed to see red. “You.”

Amara swallowed, surprisingly still meeting her father’s gaze. I expected her to cower in fear but she stared back in defiance.

That only pissed him off even further. “I’m going to kill you for disgracing me.”

Before anyone could react, he pulled out a gun and fired two shots. Two of my men dropped instantly.

Quickly, I pushed Amara behind me, eyes dead set on the man. All the other guards took out their guns and aimed it at his head.

“You take another step towards her and I’ll gut you where you stand.”

Amara wasn’t armed, so there was no way she could defend herself. I couldn’t have her father hurting her yet. She was my pawn. When I’d be done using her, he could do whatever he saw fit with her.

“Dante!”

I looked up just in time to see Cassian run in. As soon as he spotted Viktor, his face creased and he quickly pulled out a gun.

The man’s eyes scoured the perimeter, counting the number of people. He was painfully outnumbered. And I was sure he knew it. No doubt, the humiliation was like a slap to the face.

“She’s my fiancée.” I went on, the smirk never leaving my face. “Mine. The sooner you accept that, the better.”

He turned his snarl to Amara who had slowly peeked forward. “Enjoy your little charade, daughter. The next time we meet, I’ll make you pay for this disgrace.”

With that, he dropped his gun and stormed off. I watched, making sure he was out of the perimeter before motioning for the guards to move. A couple of them moved the dead bodies while the rest went on to secure the house.

I turned to Amara. “We’ll have to leave now. He knows we’re here so it won’t be safe for you.”

“Dante.” Cassian cut in.

I sent him a look, not saying anything. He got the memo, slowly heading into the house. We’d discuss later.

“That was Cassian,” I explained to Amara when she turned to follow his movement. “Second in command, and underboss to the DeLaurentis family.”

She nodded, taking all the information in. It didn’t matter how much she eventually learned. Sooner or later, she’d lead me to all the secrets I want to know. And then, I’d watch her crumble into dust.

Slowly, I leaned closer to her, lips brushing against her ear. She didn’t move, eyes occasionally following my movement.

“You wanted me as your shield, princess. But shields can be prisons too.”

I slowly moved away. “Starting tomorrow, you’ll be mine in every room we walk into. Beginning with our engagement party.”

AMARARays of sunlight slipped through the curtains, more invasive when it should have been pleasing. I tossed a little, failing to push away the dull throb at the back of my head.“Shit.”I forced myself off the bed after unceremoniously failing to fall back into that dreamless slumber. Instinctively, my fingers moved to my neck.I winced. There’d likely be bruises there. Memories of last night flashed in my head without respite. Dante’s rage filled eyes. And the surety that I was going to die. What if he had actually killed me…A sharp knock on the door cut through my thoughts. I didn’t bother hiding my annoyance when the maids’ faces came into view.“Donna.” They all bowed in unison.Something about that word made my stomach tighten. I was Dante’s fiancée now. And by fault, this new title was mine to bear, even I didn’t want it.The head maid raised her head. “We’re here to help you get ready for the day.”Maybe it had been the events of yesterday. Or just the inner walls of my min

AMARATwo hours. That was how long I’d been pacing for. How long it had been since we’d been forced to bring the engagement party to an abrupt end.Dante was quite the actor himself. His eyes held the tensed pain he probably was going through. But none of the guests read through him. Cassian had been there to pull him away quickly enough. And I’d been told to head back to my room.I bit my lip, kicking my heels off before turning to the mirror. Staring back at my reflection, it was hard to ignore how I mirrored everything expected of the wife of a don. A trophy. All a performance.Dante didn’t love me, and I held the same endearment. But in the months to come, we’d spend all the time convincing the general public that we actually did.“Are you okay?”I really meant it at the time. Of course I’d done a bit of research on Dante. Learning he had an allergy to cherries had been a bit blindsiding in all honesty. But oh how wonderful it was to have seen him so…powerless. He’d known it was m

DANTE“When was the last time you were plagued by such…feelings?”This wasn’t how I’d planned the eve of my engagement party. Before my therapist, and having to be the center of his observant, churning eyes. It was just a little to midnight and I really should have just booked it all the way to bed. But it had happened.Again. “If you even think this is going to work out, then you’ve made a fucking mistake, DeLaurentis.” The elder Vitale brother had phoned me, and talked long enough to keep what he wanted to say brief.None of their family members approved of the arrangement between me and Amara. And they would do whatever it took to get me out of the picture. Even if it meant tearing me down and relishing every last bit of it. The tipping point, however, had been the mention of my father.“My father sends his regards,” The man had said coldly. “To the late DeLaurentis. Although, he must be so disappointed.”And then my phone had ended up in smithereens, smashed against the wall ju

AMARAThere’d been multiple points in my life where I was hit with a certain blood curdling chill. It was a variation of so many things. Nauseating, fear-inducing and intended to leave you on your knees. This was one of those moments.I didn’t know much about the second in command and had barely had a smooth interaction with him from the moment we met. And yet there was something about the way his stare seemed to tear right through me.Some seconds later, I regained my composure, breaking the long ensuing silence. “What do you mean?”“Don’t give me that.” He glared, taking one step closer. “I know about your arrangement with Dante well enough.”I mirrored the hard look in his eyes. “And?””He easily towered over me. Piercing eyes had me pinned to where I stood without so much of an effort. My tongue burned with the urge to goad him. See just how angry he could get.“Look, I don’t care about whatever it is you two have going on.” His gaze bounce over me for a brief second. “But if you

AMARAI knew the day was going to be absolute shit when I woke up with that stain on the bed.My stomach felt groggy, and my eyes raw. I hated that I’d cried so much the night before. But it had all been too much. Memories of Philip, and then everything that had later ensued after. The mood that had been on the verge of plummeting soured all the more when I noticed the red stain on the bed.Like instinct, there was a small knock on the door and a maid quietly slipped in. She had red hair that demanded attention and stark green eyes.“Good morning, ma’am.” She bowed her head. “I’m Farah, the head maid of the estate. Whatever it is you need, please know that we’re all at your beck and call. Your comfort is our priority and we’ll do whatever makes your home more to your liking.”Home.My lips thinned into a grim line, a wave of nausea clawing at my throat. Such a warm word for a place that felt more like a prison. I simply nodded, forcing myself off the bed. Her eyes lingered on the sta

DANTEI watched as a myriad of emotions clouded her face. Her eyes widened, pupils dilating just enough that I could see a brief glint of shock in them. Then, her eyes lit up in flames.“In hours?” She glared. “That’s not going to happen. You don’t just get to spring that up on me, and expect me to dance to your every bidding like some fucking puppet.”My eyes flickered to the staff, their heads bent, eyes not daring to meet mine. I had a reputation to maintain, one that wouldn’t be spoiled by her insolence.Without thinking, I leaned even closer, glaring hard enough to send the message clean and clear.“You do not talk to me that way, Amara. I’ve been far too lenient with you.”Her glare didn’t waver. “I am not ready for some fancy party to sell this just yet. Give me…two days.”I didn’t respond immediately. She let out a small breath. “Two days, and I’ll ready myself into the perfect little fiancé you want.”My eyes lingered on her for a moment. The only time my fingers ever twitche
